they have changed the whistle last year, if i remember correctly. the old one was from 838 and the new one is from a 4xxx. they change was made around september by the railfest in north platte, ne.

I got to come to Denver to ride this...I've ridden on a steam locomotive piloted train but was too young to remember the experience except the smell of sleeping car/passenger car sedge and naptha (moth ball) smells on the old heavy weight car on the way to Cleveland...I think... Thanks, again... this is too nice and makes me feel downright good!

If I'm correct. Those trains with it are ES44ACs as BNSF from what I can find are the newest ES model's only buyers and those models as far as I know are the only ones UP owns.

yes. correction from my side: the whistle that was on there was from 3985 and now its a big boy whistle. if you look on upsteam.com in the video archive you will find the video

it's original..sometimes they switch it out for another UP engine called the Big boy (they did that in 2010) but most of her trips are done with her own whistle.

Diesels supposedly were not providng any pulling power. How long did this train sit there blocking the grade crossings? Why no three blasts before backing? Well done, steady video, especially when telephoto! Not like others where the train just passes by. Thank you, Skip, for posting this.

The reason for the Diesel locomotives is from Speer Junction to Carr is almost a 2% grade and there used for Dynamic braking which is all computerized.

why they put two diesels on that train in the first place? One could have handled it but as slow as 844 was going it wouldn't have needed any diesel help.

Union Pacific Acquires Big Boy Locomotive No. 4014 July 23, 2013 | 03:00 p.m. CDT Union Pacific today announced it reached an agreement with the Southern California Chapter - Railway & Locomotive Historical Society in Pomona, Calif., to transfer ownership of one of the world's largest steam locomotives, Big Boy No. 4014, back to UP.
