You should always clean the pistons before pushing back in. A piston turning tool will help you clean all the piston and then push pistons back in preferable not using pliers which will damage the pistons but something softer, some hardwood or plastic. You also need to remove the brake reservoir cap check brake fluid level which probable needs some fluid removing if pads are well worn, a syringe helps doing this.
