I'm probably the least qualified person to comment on the overall evolution of DCI, but I have a feeling that people were too hard on this show back in the day, and even now. Cavs were really trying something new and different here, and they suffered for it.

This show is my guilty pleasure because it's so ahead of its time (think about how Ink had a dance break in 2015) And has all of this talent. An amazing hornline, a killer percussion section, ESPECIALLY that front ensemble. And there's some brief moments of "wow that's almost cool" but man it SUCKS (alumnus 2017-2019). I'll watch it every year though over and over again.

My problem wasn’t with the brass (I thought it was good), but just the show design and the cheesy narration made it not good

Great music, horrible design. Not on the performers. This was the metaphorical nail on the coffin that the cavs have not been able to get out of yet.
