Vauxhall Combo 1.3 cdti, 70,000k miles approx.
A frustrating job that i had to diagnose the reason why the van would not start and then strip the engine to find out what went wrong with it as it was not clear why there was a lack of compression in all four cylinders.

I think, you overlooked the right explanation. The plastic piece at the chain guide had fallen off. This means that the timing chain could run in a more direct line from the cam sprocket to the crank sprocket. The result of that is, that the timing is off - the camshaft is running a few degrees late of the intendend position. It means premature injection since the injection timing is normally comtrolled by the cam sensor, but when the ECU detects, the timing is off, it will use the crankshaft sensor, and this leads to premature injection. Premature injection means that the combustion reaches a very high pressure before the piston is at TDC - the piston is forced to continue to TDC and the pressure raises even higher. This emormous force will break the oil film at the big ends, at they will have metal-to-metal-contact. This is a pretty common fail on this engine type - the solution is allways to renew not only the timing chain, but also the chain guides and the sprockets. On a normal maintenanced engine the chain and guides will last around 250.000 km. All in all a very fine and economical engine with no more fails than similar engines, but premature injection will kill all diesel engines. Best regards Jarl Paulsen, Denmark

did u put the jag in sport mode? - made a fair difference in my 4.2 stype [ and to the mpg as well, 17 to nine in full drive it like u stole it mode] wouldnt it be great if the punters actually told u the truth why the vehicle was acting up - must of been some bad noise/vibration before finally stopping. PS scrapped the jag now [2 full sills +brake flexis @ £80 each] and wedged engine into my freelander, just a couple of snags to sort out before its debut.........

Yeh right it’s a Vauxhall issue. It’s not and for the record, this engine is a joint venture between Fiat Power Train (FPT) and General Motors (GM). What GM actually contributed is not clear but in essence this is a Fiat engine built by Fiat. Like many of these modern over complicated engines with equipment attached for emissions, the likelihood of these engines going wrong is increased. Add this to the fact that manufacturers keep telling buyers that they don’t need to service these for long periods and you have a perfect storm. These modern diesel engines need lots of attention including very regular oil changes. This is how it is these days. The only blame you can put on Vauxhall is that GM has not invested into engine development as much as they should have done over the years. That said, sharing engines amongst other car manufacturers is now very common. How do you know what the maintenance regime was or how the van was driven or if the timing chan was correctly installed or what level of oil has been maintained or for that matter, what make of timing chain was fitted, you don’t. Worth noting is the sump on the Euro 5 models only holds 3.2 lts of oil😮This means less oil to collect the carbon. Something that was rectified on the euro 6 engine. Heading into a full diagnostic with an anti-Vauxhall attitude doesn’t allow for an honest and impartial conclusion. There is nothing wrong with this engine other the added emission technology. If maintained properly it’s just fine. If there was a crown to be offered to the worst engine of modern days, it goes to Ford with the eco boost 3 cylinder engine, hands down

First thoughts were old oil, not enough oil changes etc But 2nd thoughts were the engine has been run for a prolonged time on very low oil or even no oil. I'm sure that engine would have been making some awful noises long before it failed!⚠️😯 Edit- nice xk jag, my dream car.

The failing chain is the result of a weak chain, fitted for low friction and overall immisions and fuel economy. What kills these is short journeys with too many stop starts and long oil changes. Simple as that. There is nothing wrong with this engine, it's a user issue not been told they have to use and maintain this is a particular way due to added nonsence over immisions

A mate of mine bought an Jag XKR from the dealer where he worked as a Mechanic there and it spent more time in their workshop for head gasket failures under Warranty than he did have driving it and they wouldn't let him do the work himself in the end he took the dealership to Court over it.

Modern engines simply cannot tolerate as much abuse, lack of servicing or skimping on oil changes compared to those of days gone by. Today's engines don't wear out after 100,000 miles, instead they self-destruct if not maintained properly. As emissions laws have tightened over the years, the requirements and demands placed on the oil have also changed, and fuel is much better quality these days too, but the trend is to downsize and offset the reduced power output by implementing variable valve timing, adding a turbocharger or twin turbochargers. But then, engines are suffocated by having to add necessary items such as EGR valves, catalysts, particulate filters and then they have to attach an untold amount of sensors and probes up every orifice. If the attitudes of the general public towards mechanical sympathy and vehicle maintenance does not change and modernise, it's no wonder engines are failing in a catastrophic way.

hi, the abs is working with various other systems in your vehicle, ...generally speaking, when usually, it is one of the front abs wires that is faulty it will bring up 3 or 4 lights on your dash...this can also affect your engine so best to get the abs ecu scanned for codes and have the faulty sensor replaced as it will only get worse otherwise

Jtd engines are generally bullet proof, lack of fresh oil will cause issues. 1.9 jtdm is very mappable 210 hp egr delete, dpf deleted.and mine has passed 170000 miles and still pulls like antrain. Cdti jtd same italian engine.

I was a FIAT dealer expert technician for many years, I have seen this before. It wont have been rattling for ages, it all happened very quickly. the reason the upper big end shells are so devastated compared to the lower ones, it has been under water, hydraulic ked at revs.

@alan dawsonI have changed the head gasket on a Fiat Punto mk1 1 with single point injection (FIRE). It cranks but doesnt start. I has a bent valve on cylinder one but the owner says it started before the gasket was changed. It looks like has had too much oil in it and that might be what bent the valve. The wiring for the crank sensor wiring had also been spliced at an earlier date for some reason. Do oyu think it will run with a bent valve? The owner refuses to accept that it wont.

@@rimmersbryggeri Are you taking the mick, you took the head off to replace the head gasket and ignored a bent valve. valves are as cheep as chips. A bent exhaust valve will not stop it from running on 3, but an inlet can mess badly with fueling of the other cylinders.

@@alandawson3345 I didnt want to put it back together like but I was working in the guys garage and he told me to do it because it had supposedly ran before, I dont thing it was worthwile anyway because it has a broken windscreen to and that costs more than the car is worth to fix. What you said is kind of exactly what I told him before bolting the head back.

Those 1.3 diesel engines were a good seller back when I worked in a car breakers, and as you say not a difficult one to remove, just as well really 😂 The old 1.7 in the combo was pretty bulletproof though. I've never owned a Firenza, but I do have a 1.8 slant 4 powered Viva .😉
