Back in the '70s my best friend had a '60s model Bug. One day we were cruising along the freeway and smelled something burning. Turns out the battery, under the rear seat, had somehow caught the seat stuffing on fire. We pulled over and watched the car burn to the ground. A unique driving experience.

I have a book which seems to indicate the first beetle was the type 60 of 1934. This might have been only a prototype. It seems the first production run was of 60 cars, built by Mercedes in 1936-37. There was a type 30 built by Daimler-Benz in 1937 (from a design of 1934?) and these models were tested by the SS. But the book is very unclear. VOLKSWAGEN MILITARY VEHICLES OF THE THIRD REICH by BlaineTaylor is the text.

I currently have a 2018 Beetle and I love this car. All my family members that I’ve driven the car love it. It is definitely a car that is fun to drive. I’m the kind of person that doesn’t really need a flashy car or a very fast car but this one makes it feel fun and it feels fast and makes me happy. It’s definitely a car specially a single person. It doesn’t really need that much out of a car feel like they got something that’s fun to drive and looks unique and nice to look at. It’s got a fun styling to it, which makes you feel like you’re not just getting a generic car for the sake of having a car. I can’t tell you much about the convertible and I wouldn’t recommend it but if that’s your thing, then by all means. A 30 year-old man and I highly recommend this car because it gets great gas mileage. It’s fun to drive. It’s just wonderful.

I had a '57 with the fabric sun roof model in 1967. My then brother in-law built the engine (he could build a no-oil leak engine) and sold the car to Dad. Dad couldn't deal with the small size, so I bought it from him and had more fun than is legal in that car. I hopped it up a bit and did some comsmetics. That is a great memory. The new beetles make me drowsey.

Hi Jay, my VW dealer installed an APR ECU upgrade in my 2012 Beetle Turbo that brings the HP up to 254 HP on 93 octane. With a K&N filer, I think it is probably around 260 HP. It is definitely a wolf in sheep's clothing. And it gets about 21 to 24 MPG in the city and between 30 and 34 MPG on the highway. The thing is, unless you go into warp drive and spin the tires, no one knows or cares that it is a rocket ship. It is like the ultimate sleeper.

Right you are Matt. When I go full throttle my boast gauge reads 30+ pounds of boast. Astually, I think it should only read 19 pounds. Usually when I go into warp drive I'm holding onto the wheel and looking straight ahead. The boast gauge which is located on the center line is useless to me under hard acceleration because I can't see it.

My parents bought our first VW Beetle in 1963 for $1,200! It was cheap, reliable transportation, easy on gas and with that air cooled engine in the rear it had awesome traction in winter snows in upstate NY. We passed the snowplows on the road! Today's so called "modern" Beetles, though nice and sporty, just aren't the same and way too overpriced. That's my opinion.

I can say that in my experience the newest ones are a safe buy. I own a 2012 Turbo and it's the best car I ever drove. It hasn't failed, but be advised, the door latches could fail and those are like $50.00-$200.00 to repair, but other than that, great vehicle.
@velvetrooster5569
@velvetrooster5569 Жыл бұрын
@@fortimusprime I have had a 2013 and a 2014 Volkswagen beetle. Unfortunately the 2014 beetle got into a car crash and I ended up replacing it with a 2013 beetle. I don’t want to talk about that but I will say extremely safe in a car crash. The 2014 Volkswagen beetle was the base entry-level trim of the car but it was very nice. I liked it. I did a radio upgrade to give me Bluetooth and CarPlay for my iPhone and I liked it. I took that radio and put the original radio back in and put the upgraded radio in my 2013 Beetle when I picked that up and again I like the car it’s really good. I’ve let several people drive my car, including my brother and both of my parents and my sister-in-law and they’re all sold on the car. It is so much better than all of them ever expected it to be and I love my car and I love that they enjoyed my car as well. My 2013 beetle is a 2.5 L engine and it’s really good and has decent fuel economy. The 1.8 L engine appears to be the best for fuel economy of all the engine options and I had the 1.8L engine in my 2014 Beetle which I do not own anymore for unfortunate reasons but I do on a 2013 Beetle with a 2.5 L engine. I do eventually plan on trading my car for the 2.0 L engine Volkswagen Beetle. I just want to say that, no matter which one you have the 2012 to 2018 Volkswagen beetle is a very nice car I’ve confidently driven around with four people in the car multiple times all full grown adults and it had plenty of room in the back seats. It is susceptible to being stuck in the snow believe me I got stuck for about 20 minutes butI was fortunate enough to have three random guys. Come help me push it out of the snow, but for the most part snowy roads aren’t that much of a problem for the car because it handles very well in the snow. Surprisingly enough and the only reason I got stuck was because of a stupid mistake. I was trying to turn into a parking lot and driving across a giant pile of snow in the middle of the road so that was my fault not the car’s fault. Overall, I have to say that I completely love the car and I think anyone that drives it whether they already like the car or they might have some underwhelming expectations, I think those people are going to be pleasantly surprised by how good the newest Volkswagen beetle actually is. it’s also just a good looking car it’s not the 1998 New Beetle thank God. I know around the late 1990s and early 2000s there was a trend of taking old car designs and making a modern version of that and we can see that with things like the PT cruiser and the Thunderbird and the Chrysler prowler, and those were all under powered and under selling cars With the PT cruiser being the most popular of that list especially with suburban soccer moms. Unfortunately, the PT cruiser was everywhere but I think we can all agree that it was a fail in design and the BT cruiser GT just happen to have a good engine in it, anyways we later came to cars like the Ford mustang watching the late 2000s started having a more classic shape and then we came to the Dodge Challenger and Chevy Camaro which started having that late 1960s shape to them and they were successful in a and it’s agreed that they are good looking modern takes on an old design and I think the same thing happened with the Volkswagen beetle in 2012. It replaced what is known as the New Beetle, and is now just known as Beetle and that’s a good thing, because that differentiates it from the previous generation. It’s also a much better performing car and a safer car than the previous generation, but it does share one thing with the previous generation, and that is that they were both built off the Volkswagen golf platform, that’s not a bad thing anyways I just want to say that I’ve had two Volkswagen beetles now and I’m absolutely sold on the car. I love it and it’s a car that I think a lot more people should consider when looking for used cars because it’s got the performance but it’s not too quick or too fast so you wouldn’t be afraid to let your teenage kids drive it and think they’re going to hot rod around. It’s also just at this point in time a unique car because it stands out and that’s not why I bought it but I had a dodge neon and that broke and I decided I’d rather have a newer car that I choose instead of fixing this older car, which I don’t particularly like, although I will send a shout out to the Dodge neon, they are readily available for parts at any auto parts store, which is great and they’re cheap to maintain and if you’re just a decent regular driver, they will last a long time. I was just tired of driving that car for so long, I watched my family by and saw so many of those cars that I just had to get away from it when it broke on me and it was the perfect opportunity and time and gave me the perfect reason to buy my own car for myself. I did my research and I found out that the Beetle is actually a very reliable car that gets a roof pretty good gas mileage up to 40 miles per gallon if you want to buy the diesel Volkswagen beetle but 29 to 33 city and Highway is not bad. Of course that’s for the 1.8 L engine and the 2.5 L engine which I currently have gets 26 city and 30 highway I’m not sure about the 1.2 L engine or the 1.4 L engine because I don’t look at those and I don’t see those come up that much when looking at beetles. Anyways, I’m going to end this here by saying I like the Volkswagen beetle and I think anyone that drives it will like the Volkswagen beetle. It’s a great reminder of the classic Volkswagen beetle which lasted from 1949 all the way up to 1980 and then was properly brought into the modern era in 2012 in the car that was released in 1998. We just won’t talk about because when you think about it you don’t really see those as much. I’ve seen more 2012 and up Beetle’s driving around than I ever remember seeing of the 1998 New beetle. OK I love the car. I hope you do too. If you ever get the opportunity go drive it.

@@velvetrooster5569 I agree completely. I have the same situation in my family where both my parents and brother love how it drives! It truly is a great car. I'm seeing them more often than ever on the road. Maybe there's a rise in sales of it? IDK. But in my university I can count two or three every day. It's great car, and I will buy another one if mine ever breaks. But if you have any recommendations on the maintenance of the car, please let me know! Mine's nearing 80,000 miles and I'm planning on an oil and filter change and transmission fluid change.
@velvetrooster5569
@velvetrooster5569 Жыл бұрын
@@fortimusprime i’m not an expert on car maintenance, but I do know that you should always look at your fluid levels at least once every two weeks or so. I know that you should get an oil change every 5,000 miles. This is basic maintenance for just about every car in. The owners manual of the car usually has tips for good maintenance as well as good fluid levels, and a good schedule to change the fluids in it. I grew up with my dad as a professional mechanic and my older brother is also a professional mechanic so I can usually ask them any questions. I do know that you can always ask local mechanics for any knowledge or tips about maintaining your car properly. I know that it’s a good idea to get your tires rotated. When you get your oil change, this is usually a standard bundle for most shops. It’s also good practice to change your timing belt or chain depending on what your car has about every 50,000 to 60,000 miles. The same goes for serpentine belts 50,000 to 60,000 miles to change. One good tip is that more modern cars have more modern engines which means they like to run hotter and faster because they’re designed for that so once or twice a week floor the accelerator from 20mph up to 80mph because it’s good for the engine and helps keeps your oil and trans fluid in all the right places so nothing dries out and the oil and trans fluid don’t just settle at the bottom because sometimes that happens especially if a car sits to long but usually that takes close to 9 months to a year if not driving that car. Also a bottle of Techron in the gas tank once every 3 to 6 months is good for a clean burning engine and helps remove some of the carbon build up inside the engine. Also, try to get your car up to optimal running engine temperature. On the 2012 to 2018 Volkswagen beetles the digital gauge has oil temperature as one of the options in the winter. It is important to preheat your car so that you can get the oil temperature up to optimal running temp. You don’t have to wait for it to go that high but at least make sure it goes up to optimal running temperature while driving before you reach your destination. on the volts wagon beetle that is about 195°F in America if your country uses metric or Celsius, then that would be about 91°C. All this is pretty much basic, standard maintenance and longevity practice for maintaining a car and you can do this for about any car. Just make sure some of the specific temperatures and any other numbers match your model of the car and for me, I only have experience with the 1.8 L engine and the 2.5 L engine And I have some knowledge over the 2.0 L engine because I want one and therefore I’ve done research about it online and the maintenance seems to be about the same for all three models of the current Volkswagen beetle. I also check your tire pressure every week because depending on the temperature it can fluctuate higher temperature means tire tire pressure, which means you might need to let a little bit of air out of your tires and colder temperature means you might need to put a little bit more air in your tires And standard tire pressure is 35 psi also known as pounds per square inch. You can get a tire pressure gauge at any auto parts store for just a few bucks. Just put it in the glove box of the car and check your tires once a week. The tire pressure gauge should also make it easy to let air out of the tires during the summertime but you’ll need to find an air compressor somewhere usually at a nearby gas station in order to put more air in the tires during the winter time. Also optimal tire pressure makes your tires last longer so 35 psi in the tires. So like I said, before, all of this is just standard good maintenance practices for taking care of your car and ensuring that it lasts and runs as long as possible. Also, just curious to know what size engine do you have and what trim model did you get? My 1.8 L Beetle was the entry-level car and my 2.5 L beetle that I currently have. What is the rental. The difference is that with the entry level you get cloth and with the rental you get leather seats with seat heaters. I lucked out and got a 2.5 L rental trim level but they told me that it was owned by a business and specifically not a rental company and only had 48,000 miles on it when I bought it, which is pretty good because my 1.8 L engine had 63,000 miles when I bought it which means I ended up buying a car with less miles obviously. So yeah just curious to know what size engine you got and what trim package did you get. On the use market sometimes it is kind of hard to know which trim model you’re getting but a little bit of research can easily tell you that which in my case is what I had to do to find out that I had the entry level 1.8 L Beetle what when I bought the 2.5 L Beetle they told me, so again just curious what engine size do you have and what trim level do you have? Also, my Beetle has 17 inch wheels on it. Oh, I hope this helps and I’m sorry if I said one or more things that you already know but I’m glad to help if I said anything that you might not have known and I hope this helps you maintain your car for as long as possible

Well, to be blunt: A 1973 is NOTHING like the 1938. The 1938 is lighte, smaller, and has bias-ply tires. It's a wonderful vehicle, I'd love to own any beetle from the 30's-40's. The 1973 is a modernized version of that car, but it has radial tires, fender flares, government mandated bumpers, the list goes on and on. If I had the choice between a 2012 Beetle and a 1938 Beetle, I'd take the 1938 model. Between the 2012 and your 1973? I'd take the 2012. Have a nice day, hipster! :)

Of all the first drives of cars Jay Leno has been lucky to have, this is perhaps the most ignominious.

Most of Jay's vehicles have been out of production for years. Do you think Honda actually paid Jay to review his 1964 Honda SM600? The reason I brought up the S2000 is due to it having an inline-4, 2.0L engine, that produces 240hp (normally aspirated) at 8300rpm; redlines to 9k. I also drive an AP1 (first model) as well. :)

The old air cooled beetle had an attribute I can attest to. They are notably soft when you T-bone one on your motorcycle.

"Dual clutch" not "double clutch", Jay. Double clutch usually means when you use the clutch twice when you shift, which you would have to do if the manual transmission did not have synchronizers, like in the early days of cars. Dual clutch transmissions use two clutches instead of a torque converter.

I'd take that 38 beetle over new any day,engine in the back,simplicity,the shape,all mechanical,new one is nice,but its just another car stuffed with electronics you dont need and i agree to the person who said,that they have kept engine in the back,with RWD new beetle would be much cooler

Yea its a great car my buddy has one. The only thing thats dumb is the boost pressure gauge that say you're running 25lbs of boost lol. When they only run at 9lbs stock and stage 1 apr peaks around 19lbs.

Because when the "NEW" beetle was introduced to the market, it was marketed directly to women. Plus it went from bad ass rear wheel drive air cooled badassery... toooo a SLOW AS ALL HELL 2.0 or 1.8t in the front, and FRONT WHEEL DRIVE..... so in other words they turned a "porche-esque", in something you can use to go buy tampax at your local farmer's market.

Thanks for the reply MrCoPpolice! the president of Brazil is Dilma, but she have so much in common with Hugo! The taxes are very high for import products, and the national products are more expensive here then in the countries that we export for. For exemple, a VW GOL, that is a Brazilian project and production car, is the most sold car for years here. VW is selling it for about R$35k (US$ 16k) while in MEXICO, they sell the same car for approximadetly R$17k (US$8,5). What u think about this?
