When I worked the DC9’s, our airline trained that the primary exits for the aft flight attendant were the window exits, not the tailcone. NW1482 was an example of what a death trap it could be back there. The flight attendant attempted a jettison of the tailcone, which failed due to improper maintenance of the cable release surrounding the tailcone itself-a flight attendant and a passenger died.

The tail cone exit... this brings back a memory when i was flying an AirTran B717 with my family to Florida. I was a wise guy teenager and had to ask my mother what happens when you open the tail cone exit in a ditching. My mom, a woman who knows nothing about aviation or aircraft evacuations told me you know what will happen it will sink the plane in the water. So now as an adult, I at least have some hope for people in evacuation scenarios.

BAD EXIT GO FOWARD
@GymGuy817JasonEuless
@GymGuy817JasonEuless 7 ай бұрын
This will not be confusing when put together with the big picture. The command to STAY SEATED is only given during the interim time between when the captain says EASY VICTOR, EASY VICTOR, EASY VICTOR and EVACUATE, EVACUATE, EVACUATE. This is the time during which the crew is prepping for evac. The pilots are shutting down the engines. It gives the flight attendants warning that an evacuation is coming without letting the passengers know, so they don’t rush the exits before it’s safe to evacuate. During this time all flight attendants will be shouting STAY SEATED, so it will not be conflicting with other exits. Then when the actual evacuation command is given, all FAs will begin the evacuation together and with the same phraseology. The STAY BACK command is used later on if there’s a malfunction at the tailcone. My airline dropped the EASY VICTOR command but in my opinion should bring it back.

all these emergency procedures, even considering the critical failure of the doors and people still get anxious on aircraft
@johannesbols57
@johannesbols57 2 жыл бұрын
Unless you've experienced a real evac. you don't realize a couple of things. The first is it happens very fast. The second is the shouting actually keeps people calm. The third (yes I know) is you are literally shoved out of the aircraft. This process from beginning to end takes about ten seconds.

It’s not uncommon to assign a duty to an able bodied person. Even in a planned ditching you instruct a passenger on operation of the doors.
@CVON12
@CVON12 6 ай бұрын
I think the biggest thing to note is that the strap is the same strap that you have as your seat belt. That is done for a reason so there is no confusion on how to operate and release that strap, and why flight attendants instruct passengers on how to operate their seatbelts. @@mbox314

It's better to redirect them to another exit and then try and get the exit open rather than have them storm on through and crush you, especially if you can't release/open it due to a mechanical fault as you'd now be trapped behind everyone.

The tailcone had a history of jamming in real evacuations. I think they assumed that if it didn't come out on the first try, it was highly likely that it wasn't going to deploy at all.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmWnfmOue5yriqc The catwalk is the platform leading to the emergency exit. It IS NOT the same as the air stairs. In this video you'll see the catwalk lift up when ground personnel open the air stairs. Air stairs are only controlled on the OUTSIDE. There is no interior control to the aft air stairs.

@HEDGE1011
@HEDGE1011 6 жыл бұрын
lwnf360 No it's not. The passengers do not need to know how to open the exit and are simply directed to come to one exit or redirected to another exit. The flight attendant is solely responsible for understanding the procedures involved. Though I'm not a particular fan of the tailcone as an exit, all airline door training is extremely similar and may involve redirecting passengers. Flight attendants are generally quite good at evacuating aircraft, largely due to scads of training on exits and procedures like this.

this is a crew training video. its not expected for passengers to be able to operate the tailcone exit themselves.
@RRay-ru2tq
@RRay-ru2tq 5 жыл бұрын
Because this isn't for passengers. This video is for flight crew who need to be able to operate the little used tail exit on the aircraft. The only thing passengers need to do in this case is 'stay seated' until they are told to get up and prepare for evacuation. Then they need to follow commands telling them to either move backwards to the tail of the plane and leave like they do for ANY OTHER door. That's it. Stay seated until they're told to, and then get up, and leave like any other door. It's not hard.

Guess it's better than nothing (F100) but man, what a pain in the ass. Can you imagine actually trying to use this crap in real life? I think the Douglas people were dropping acid when they designed this fun house. Love the peep hole -- great idea, like using a microscope during a plane crash. At least on the 727, there was actually a proper window.

53 REAL TIME SECONDS BEFORE THE FIRST PASSENGER COULD BE EVACUATED. This is UNACCEPTABLE. You have 90 seconds to get off a plane mandated by the FAA. This leaves 37 seconds to get how many people off this plane? Not good enough. I can't determine if this is because Md had such complicated instructions to get out of the tail or if it is Delta training, but either way, in an evacuation, it will not be as calm and organized and well lit like this video, so leaving 37 seconds to get everyone passengers and crew off that plane in chaos just ain't happening and it isn't right.
