Each year, 100,000 people apply for a position as a Delta Air Lines flight attendant, but only 3,000 people get the job. That's because it’s much more than being a waitress in the sky. We visited Delta's flight attendant training facility in Atlanta to see how they're trained for emergency evacuations and medical emergencies.

@Logger Uh.. I’ve never seen that happen on any type of flight I’ve been in and I’ve been on a LOT of flights. I think it was rude for you to stereotype all flight attendants to be that way. And also, they are not always women.

Im a flight attendant in Qatar airways and I agree with u that the passengers that we take on board are always spitting back at our faces like the other day we were on board and I was giving food to the passengers and one passenger said that I was giving him poison in his food and he started screaming at the top of his lungs and I tried to calm him down and he started swearing at me and I had the bottle of water in my hand he snatched it out of my hands and threw the water on me 😭 I didn't cry, I didn't laugh, i just smiled and walked away. Flight attendants needs their voices to be heard after all it they are human beings too.

When my parents took me on a lot a places, planes were a breeze. But the plane ride we went in was bumpy, and it was making me sick. The flight attendant gave me snacks and covers. I am a flight attendant and we are trained for many different scenarios. We are not just coffee servers in the sky. In any given day we could be a nurse and care for someone suffering a medical emergency (happened many times on flights I've worked on), we could become security and fight to protect the aircraft and passengers from an attacker, we could become firefighters (this has also happened to me), we could have to evacuate the aircraft and ensure passengers survive (we are last ones off the plane), we could deal with bomb threats, the list goes on.

They did that to me one day and I am a nurse, they needed help with medications and shouted for medical personnels. I have anxiety so I was thinking "please, someone put their hand up, please", no one did so I felt obligated to do so. They just wanted information on Oxycodone pain relief which I was able to help them with but I felt so anxious about the situation because when I work I usually have a senior nurse helping me make the right decisions. Not funny dude. That's what the passengers on the Aeroflot Flight 1492 crash did, and 41 people ended up dying in the fire because their exits were blocked by people with backpacks and people trying to get luggage out of overhead lockers. Every second counts in an emergency. Your backpack could literally be responsible for killing someone.

when i was on a flight to see my parents (i was 13) i had to stay after the flight and wait for someone to escort me off. when i was waiting i saw the flight attendants saying goodbye to every passenger and only a couple even acknowledged them. but the one who stayed with me and walked me off ,cause i was the last to leave, was super funny and nice. she asked me stuff and played a game on her phone and showed me. she grew up in chicago so she had a really fun accent. she kept complimenting me too. but what i realized is that these people don’t get enough credit. they have to deal with so much stuff and be nice about it. seeing this made me realize there is more to it than a smile and a wave. lmao no one asked but whatever

I applied for a flight attendant job today, the chances of me getting accepted are not very great considering I missed the deadline by 4 days and the minimum age to apply was 21 and I'm still 19. I however would really love to be a flight attendant sooner or later because I speak 2 languages and can speak bits of 2 others, and I'm generally really good with cultures and people so it seems like a great occupation for me to be in update: I got selected for an interview!

I was on my way to Hawaii a few weeks ago. When I was on the way there (we were flying Delta) a lady was a diabetic and she got so low she passed out. They handled it so well and I was so glad. My mother is a type one diabetic and she used a glucagon (basically a shot of sugar to make your blood sugar go up, only used in emergencies) to bring the lady back. I was so glad they had everything under control and the lady was alright.

I am a flight attendant at one of the world's largest airlines. I have a Master of Arts degree, experience as an organizational development director at a major media company, and my own consulting practice that earns me a solid six-figure income in addition to my flight attendant salary. I’m a flight attendant because I love the job and making the travel experience as pleasant and enjoyable as I can for my passengers. I find that fun and rewarding. Most flight attendants are college educated. Many have career experience outside of aviation. I was also a training instructor at my airline for eight years. Believe me, the training is tough and intense. -- far more than most people would ever imagine (crashes, evacuations, fire fighting, ocean ditchings, medical emergencies, CPR, safety protocols, human trafficking, self-defense, terrorism, etc.). And at my airline, if you don’t pass every exam and practical check with 90%, you fail and are released from the program. In addition, the Federal Aviation Administration (in the USA) requires us to be re-trained and re-certified every 12 months. There’s a whole lot more to it than meets the eye. The passengers see about 10% of what we are trained to do. I hope no one has to find out what flight attendants are really responsible for in a serious life-threatening emergency.

Flight attendant here: I've made the decision to just MAKE PEACE with the fact that we will never truly be respected as the professionals we are. It used to bother me so much and I would get so angry when people would downgrade us to flying servers but I realized society's mentality will never change so there is no use in losing sleep over it. It's unfortunate and I love my job but I just have to hold my head up proudly in silence knowing that my job is essential and we play a fundamental role in delivering our passengers to their destination safely. There’s this one flight attendant which was amazing! So I was on a 14 hour flight which between Sydney Australia and Doha, So you pretty much had 2 meals in that flight dinner and breakfast. Dinner was served to you after a hour once you got on the plane. Then you would have a few hours to watch movies and those stuff then after a few hours most people went to bed, in the morning once you woke up you would get breakfast so at breakfast I didn’t like anything they were serving and I was starving.. So this flight attendant got me some oat meal and some fruit, It isn’t much but it was really kind of her to do that. She made sure I was comfortable and went even got me cereal! I know right cereal!! Just in case I didn’t like the oat meal!! Best flight attendant! ❤️

@Samantha Schelovitzky I don't think so, but it's possible flight attendants don't eat the plane food and have their own stuff. So given they have water and milk on board it probably isn't that hard to have a thing of cereal or oatmeal on them. The oatmeal would just require the water to be heated.

Those slides are pretty dangerous. In this this video they only slid down 6 or 7 feet. On a real plane it can be 15 to 20 feet which makes the slide practically vertical.

Those wondering about that question at the end, how training has changed due to COVID19. At this time Delta classes have ceased for the time being. I do recall their was a class graduating in a week, and a class they had just started...sent them all home. While very sad they will be able to start training once Delta can afford to do so. Training is expensive and unfortunately they had to stop abruptly. Hope this all passes soon.

With all due respect to FAs, “all this” isn’t THAT much training. And it’s far from physically grueling. There is a lot to remember though. As an FA, career wise, chances are you are actually a less than to some or many of the passengers, be it in terms of salary, quality of life, education, (which i acknowledge is subjective and doesn’t matter) skill, motivation, etc. most flight attendants would make great EMTs. Not because of their skill but their personality and composure. Being an emt is a far more respected job than being what some would consider to be a sky maid. It takes far more physical and mental work to be an emt though, but I think more flight attendants should take that path.

@@colesisler582 it’s a lot of training...at some airlines 6-8 weeks with countless practical and theory exams on up to 4 different aircraft each with different procedures. During this time, only a few days are spent on the actual drink serving which is what you see on a regular flight. Not to mention coming back annually to repeat the same exams and having to prove your competence in safety knowledge before each flight and also the impact that operating through different time zone and working unsociable hours which could be made even longer by delays etc

@@colesisler582 I am a flight attendant at one of the world's largest airlines.

When My Mom was a flight attendant there were many requirements: 1-Pass the physical exam (Including running 100 meters, swim 50 meters) The stronger were selected to enter the Academy 2-You had to be on your ideal weight (Overweight people weren't accepted) 3-You needed to speak english (My country's mother tongue is Spanish) 4-Heed every order no matter what and pass monthly exams 5-Depending on your experiences you will get flights, only the experimented ones could travel to other continents

Reckless Rickey if there aren’t a lot of people on a plane people may have to be moved to balance it. The window escapes in the middle of the plane also have to be manned just in case the doors fail. I flew London Southend to Prague with Flybe once and there were maybe seven of us on the plane. My mum and I were asked to sit in the window escape aisle as well as another man on the other side.
