What I liked about this video was that you took the time to use your senses. It drives home the idea that just making some basic observations can put you in the correct "diagnostic funnel". "Feel" the misfire, "hear" the even cranking, "smell" the excessive fuel. Those three things scream ignition problem... Sure, there are other things to consider but, it is a valid diagnostic direction to start with.

An older, experience mechanic such as myself would have taken the easiest, and most likely suspects out of the loop first. Those spark plugs would have been the second thing I removed and taken a look at. ruling out the easy, and least expensive items first often saves hundreds of dollars in labor time. This is why I became my own mechanic 40 years ago and build all of my own computers. I have empathy for people who do not possess the skill set needed to be their own mechanic and troubleshooter.

Absolutely with you on that one. Scan tools are a valuable diagnostic aid, but rule out the basics before you begin micro analysing. As you said, so many customers pay way too much because so many rely upon the code reader rather than common sense.

Second that, no one seems to just do basics, they jump to the youtube video they just saw and start there. And agreed with Atouk even the greenest of techs would have at least looked at and swapped plugs while the coil was off . Lots of time wasted trying to use the techniques learned on youtube David B

Glad I could be of help. Diagnosing problems like this in a DIY environment comes with a lot of challenges. As a professional technician I have a lot of diagnostic tools available to me that a DIY'er would not, so I try to keep my troubleshooting as simple as I possibly can to arm you guys with techniques you can use at home. There are many issues where I have to break the big guns out to diagnose, but generally speaking I try to keep it as low tech as I can for you guys.

As an old guy who has worked on cars my whole life, and not having a lot of diagnostic equipment, my first guess would be spark plugs and I would have started by pulling them first. Wet in the cylinder? Not burning the fuel it is getting. Nice look at the diagnostics but I'd have fixed that miss quite a bit earlier.

If you're having a Misfire, it could be your coil Pack, $199 part on Auto zone, But only $50-75 on amazon. It's a common problem in Chevy Cruze Models. It took me a while to find out what was wrong with my car. If it's running rough, Powering down, not wanting to accelerate with out jerking... if it's not the Plugs, change the Coil Pack.

Man you took 2 days to find a bad plug? hope u did not charge the customer by the hour! I'm not a mechanic. I guess if I just swapped out the plugs and it fixed the problem temporarily I would never have known if it was a fuel injector issue or a coil issue or something else causing the plug to misfire. Still I got to compliment to you for paying attention to detail!

Yep yep. I hate playing swaptronics, but in some instances like this it is the only way to go given the circumstances. Not a big issue on this vehicle given how easy everything is to get to, but definitely a big problem where significant tear down is required to access the component in question. Primary or secondary ignition are always my preffered first tests over swapping things around in most instances.

Good video. One thing I wanted to note is that fuel trims are gonna be off when you have a misfire.. also loop status can be affected by a misfire. The computer will keep the vehicle in open loop and go to some default numbers for the fuel trims to help save the catalytic converter.

I definitely prefer this thoughtful scientific approach, over the blind plan to blast off the parts cannon with plugs, then coils and boots with minimal testing. Yup, some guys go fast in an effort to minimize labor cost to the customer, or because they are uncomfortable with the technology, or because they want to get the car out the door without really caring what was wrong. But in the end, I'd be disappointed if some kind of real diagnostics were not done. And if the parts cannon approach didn't work, those same guys who sarcastically claimed their approach is better would be looking to somebody like you who could chase it down a little further. This case is more complex than a plug, you also had the low boost and the mystery of coolant loss. Better to get as much info as possible.

So I have this exact problem on my '14 cruze with 1.4T. Missfire on cylinder 1. New plugs, gapped correctly show color change halfway up the strap. Also installed a new coil pack. Compression checks out 200 psi across the board. Fuel injector resistance checks the same across the board at 12.2 ohms. The wires that make up the plug that connects the coil pack all seem to be in good condition. Female ends of the coil pack plug show no corrosion. I have run out of ideas at this point. Before any work was done, we had been getting a P0301 code. After new plugs, new coil pack, and new injector on cylinder 1, we are getting the code P0300. Any help is genuinely appreciated.

Tyler Flight, valve covers are high failure items on this vehicle for sure, and are prime suspects for lean fault codes and poor idle conditions. Enjoy your videos thanks! These live diagnostics tell it like it is instead of staged KZbin repairs. You show how gathering competing evidence can often be misleading such as the empty coolant bottle. The color of that plug from cyl 1was interesting. Was it just a faulty plug or was the plug fouled - a symptom of another problem? Excessive fuel or oil entering the cylinder perhaps.
@pinpointautomotiverepair15927 жыл бұрын
I think the discoloration was simply due to the poor running conditions in this cylinder. I could not positively identify an issue with this plug on a visual inspection, but I suspect the porcelain electrode insulation was cracked internal to the plug somewhere, causing the spark to jump to the threads and not through the gap.

@@johnnyjohnster1843 I'm suspecting it had a crack in the intake or exhaust runners and when you stop running the motor antifreeze would leak into the cylinder because the compression was good, no oil in antifreeze or antifreeze in oil when you start the motor up in the morning it would run rough just for a few seconds until it burned the antifreeze out.

Wish this guy would work at the dealership I just brought my car to. They're telling me that I need to replace the engine and it's doing exactly the same thing as this one, was giving them the exact codes that this one was pulling up as well.

Mine always had a misfire in cylinder one. Found out it’s the head gasket. Still have problems with cylinder one

Matthew Valadez that's exactly what it is ! The coolant will continue to get low and continue to foul the plug out ! Happened on my 2016 Chevrolet Trax with the 1.4 turbo engine

Cheap in line spark testers might be a way to go instead of plug wires

I have a 2014 Chevy Spark and try as I might i cannot find ANYTHING on it showing how to work on the engine. Like engine schematics, spark plug changes, where to find the fuel injector, etc. can anyone post some stuff about the chevy spark. I know it's a tiny compact engine and not a big favorite of hobbyists to work on. But I'm desperate.

I have a Chevy Cruze 2011 1.4 lt turbo. My car is experiencing a random misfire code p0300 & p0299. This is my first car and also the worst purchase I’ve ever made. Every time I fix something I have to turn around and fix something else. Before this problem occurred my car had been sitting for a year because I needed my engine replaced. So my engine finally got replaced about 4 weeks ago everything was going good. And then I went and put gas in my car with in the next 24 hrs my car starting making jerking movements and giving rough start ups. I video recorded the situation and my mechanic said it was a misfire due to me putting in bad gas.

Same thing is happening to my 2012 sonic. Everything was fine until I filled up my tank. How did the mechanic fix the issue?
