Join me in tackling another heavy repair! In this series I address a common coolant leak on Ford 3.5 Duratec engines, the dreaded water pump leak. I show you how I go about performing this repair, which includes removal of the powertrain and replacement of all timing components. Enjoy!

You mentioned that this vehicle was engineered with servicability in mind. Remove the entire drivetrain? To change a water pump? I don't think I'll be buying that vehicle or any other that is that difficult to do what should be simple tasks. Great video as always but not a very servicable engine! Been wrenching for over 45 years, changed many a water pump, never pulled an engine to do it.

Thank you harbor....I have a water pump problem on my 2012 ford taurus with 234 + thousand miles on it. First estimated cost for replacement is $3100, and they'll need the vehicle for at least 2 days. I love my car too, just a great size vehicle for me..but being a GM retiree I think I'm going to have to go with the General now on my next vehicle purchase.

The oil pan is aluminum so be careful.

Ikr.? -it's amazing to me guys like Joe are willing to take half a car apart and put it back together again just replace a wear item. Obviously this used to happen in home electronics (my area of expertise) as well. One would take tape decks or VCRs apart to replace belts, what have you. However, it wasn't like any error on the tech's part was going to endanger the users' life. There's just too much involved here.
@Hooha1986
@Hooha1986 6 жыл бұрын
Yep, horrible design but the whole reason he's having to do this is for a crap water pump on a five year old car. If you're going to make techs do all this for a pump you better make a damn good water pump. If you had to do this every 150K miles or something similar it would be a little more understandable but after just 5 years, thats just stupid.

They do it on purpose, try buying an air filter for your 05 ford focus, guess what you cant its a "lifetime" filter lol located behind the bumper. meaning they designed it to be throw away garbage. guess they caught too much flak or got sued because in later model ones it is replaceable. they will do what ever they can get away with. this is why i hate fords, and as a mechanic who works on fords i hate telling people how much labor is because its always over the top when its a ford.

I love this video, because my daily driver is a 1952 chevy pick up. Have never owned a car newer than 1972. My dad was a strict man and told me over and over, don't let anyone work on your bicycle. Well to this day I have never hired a mechanic. I sometimes have to do a repair job on my car 3 times to get it right, but in the end save money, and never have to wonder whether the mechanic F***ed me or not. A guy once said he wished he had a truck like mine but said I wouldn't want it to break down on me in the middle of nowhere. a few weeks later the brain in his late model toyota went out. good thing he wasn't in the middle of nowhere.

I just bought a 2012 Taurus Limited. The dealer offered me a service contract that covers the water pump and a lot of other major repairs with zero deductible included in the purchase price. All I have to pay for is fluids and filters. The car has 80.500 miles on it. I don't know if the coolant has ever been changed, so I'm going to replace it. On April 2020, Ford approved the use of Motorcraft VC-13G Yellow Coolant as a direct replacement for Motorcraft VC3B Orange Coolant, and I'm going to put it in. Maybe the water pumps will last longer with the yellow coolant. I had a 2005 Taurus which I bought new and had it for 15 years. Great car. The 2012 is a much bigger car than the 2005 model. It is a nice car.

I agree on more frequent coolant changes. Also, when these pumps have a catastrophic failure, it because of bearing failure. Bearings do not like dirty oil. I always change the oil and filter at 3,000 miles or one year, which ever occurs first. Oils breakdown over time. It's much cheaper to change the oil than repairing major parts of the engine.

They are building cars today like washing machines, they don't want them to be reliable for years. They want new car buyers to not hold on to them for too long and things like this will encourage them to trade them in for another new one when the warranty expires. And by making it so complicated to repair, it discourages the average backyard mechanic from fixing it himself and bring it to a dealer or buy another car. Cars that last a long time is good for the person that owns it but not so good for the economy, that's the way they look at it.

Technically, Duratec 30 V6 (3.0L) is the most powerful and newest Ford FWD V6 engine you can get with water pump outside driven by belt. It was last produced for 2012 Ford Fusion and Escape. Maybe this is a highly-desirable used car now to transport your loved ones. The RWD 3.5L and 3.7L (F-150, Transit, and Mustang) are excluded from this problem, since it's a longitudinal version with its water pump located outside instead. Can you believe that?

Ian Johnson, to be completely honest with you I would not attempt this repair in vehicle. Not because the timing components are hard to access, but because of the difficulty in successfully installing the timing cover. The basket is fully silicone, and trying to get it between the body and engine and installed properly would be extremely difficult to do without smearing the sealant and risking a leak.

OK, please explain this to me. You said this is a well designed engine BUT you need to remove the entire drive train from the car in order to change a part which eventually fails on every car ever made namely the water pump. I could do this in 35 minutes on my GM 3800 at a cost of about $50. In 235,000 miles I changed the water pump 4 times which I think would be fairly average. Here you've got a multi thousand dollar job but even worse the coolant easily mixes with the oil to form a deadly goo that can easily destroy an engine if not immediately repaired. HOW THE HELL IS THAT A WELL DESIGNED ENGINE?

I am the lucky owner of those Ford Taurus SE 2013, Just watching this video made me cringe as each parts and other plastic items are being removed. Reading the comments below is true. I had a major coolant leak out of the blue ( it was pretty bad). Luckily I keep certain things in my trunk in case of emergency (coolant, tools, oil, etc..)I was very lucky that I paid $800 and some change mind you in CA. The mechanic fucked up on the labor hours, didn't charge me for the special tool and gave me a discount since I lost a day's wage on the miscalculation. I'm glad I still had my peddle hopper '94 Ford Aspire but it needed a muffler (it was very loud) to use till my 2013 is fully repaired (water pump). The whole engine had to be removed just to access the water pump and it took him a week 10 hours plus (had other clients). I crossed my finger as I moved out of CA. to WI. by driving. Still running but the engine isn't the same. He did a great job. I just blame the poor engine design and lack of space. Great Video..if I knew this would be a hassle and high cost I would not have purchased this vehicle. Buyer's remorse.

This is why I’ll stick to Crown Victorias. Only Taurus I would get is the 2.0 EcoBoost. If it’s a 5th gen Explorer, it would be a 2.3 Ecoboost. This is the reason why many police departments in Texas especially rural ones are buying Chevy Tahoes now.

More reason to keep a car from the 80's and early 90's. All water pumps fail, and to have to tear down the whole engine is criminal. You can't tell me Ford didn't know this. $$$$

Cars from the 80s and the early 90s have other issues. Smog components failing, underpowered due to new emissions technology, bad head gaskets, crappy, cheap interior components that rattle, etc. The quality on the new Fords is light years ahead of the cars they made 25 years ago. I've owned Fords from both eras.

@pinpointautomotiverepair1592 6 жыл бұрын
I doubt this is true. Generally a leak out of the weep hole is due to a failed inside ring gasket on the pump and not the water pump bearing itself.
@pinpointautomotiverepair1592
@pinpointautomotiverepair1592 6 жыл бұрын
I would get a second opinion from a reputable garage. It is likely they would rather put an engine in than attempt to service the chains due to the complexity of the job.

Triangle Diagnostics I'm going in tomorrow in person to look at it. It's at a ford dealership service center. He said bearing failed and gouged inside. If this is true, wouldn't cleaning out debris and installing new pump be ok? I wouldn't think gouging would matter much on cooling system?? Your thoughts? Thanks a million
@pinpointautomotiverepair1592
@pinpointautomotiverepair1592 6 жыл бұрын
Glock79, did they actually tear it down to look at it? If not than they can't for certain say what is going on. I've never personally repaired one of these where the bearing has failed, though I have heard of it happening and most often people replace the pump without issue. Most of the pumps I've replaced on these have been external leaks such as in your case.
