We have owned and lived fulltime in our 2013 Jayco Seneca for just over a year now. It seemed like a good time to do a review of the unit and how we feel about it as a fulltime living coach.
Here is a link to the 2013 Jayco Seneca brochure on our

One of the best reviews of any RV I've ever seen. Clear, concise, & honest. Thanks for that. I came close about 1½ yrs ago to buying a ShowHauler Super C. So I'm familiar w/ a lot of the things you talked about. There certainly is a lot to like about the Super C.

Solve your fueling problem by stopping at truck stops. The truck fuel islands have a master and slave fuel delivery so you can do both sides at once. Flying J even offers RV discounts and laundromats.

Great video. When using forest service roads: Use a 4-wheeler trick and buy an on-board air system (I recommend an twinl ARB). Air down your tires a bit and enjoy the softer ride.

Thank you for the video. For those of us considering a purchase of a Seneca over the next few years or so, this kind of impartial review is extremely informative. As far as your issue with having to fuel up with diesel on both sides of the rig, my experience has been that just about all truck stops have the pumps on both sides to fuel both tanks simultaneously. I always try to use Pilot/Flying J because I have their Good Sam Pilot Card which lets me pay right at the pump and never have to go inside. I know from my observations, that all of their stations have the pumps on both sides. Anyway, loved your video, keep em coming. You've moved the Seneca up on my list of Super C's.

Go to the truck island of a truck stop for fuel. All big rigs have dual tanks so they have a pump on both sides that allows fueling both tanks at once.

As a war veteran Desert Storm 1990 - 94 and former long haul CDL Class A Tractor Trailer Driver, I recommend Pilot, truck stop's, or Loves, there the best choice in the aftermath of the collapse of the Flying J Truck Stops. The discounts are fairly rewarding.

If you force air through the TV compartment and into your living space, you will simultaneously reduce the temperature reading on the thermostat, prolong the life of the components in the TV, and gain a small heat source for the winter, which would regain some of the energy lost through heat produced by the TV. You would want to be able to vent the exhaust outside during the summer, as not to elevate the temperature of the room, causing the A/C to run unnecessarily.

Thank you for the great video. Especially thanks for showing us how usable the rig is with the slide in. For traveling purposes Walmart and the like frown on overnight stays with the slides open so this is an often overlooked issue and pretty important. So thanks for bringing in the slides. I assume the master bed is still usable with the slide in.... Just found you so looking forward to seeing the modifications, especially the swivel seats. I too prefer an oven and cook top combo, don't quite understand why so many manufactures are switching away from this but I'd gladly swap out a drawer or two in favor of this add on.Thanks again for sharing. Excellent Job! And gorgeous coach! I have a Tiffin Phateon 40’ now. Being an over the road truck driver/owner for 30 years and familiar with the hoods and cabovers, I wish now I would have looked at these before I bought my class A. The ease of engine maintenance alone is enough reason to choose this over a class A... I am all in with my Tiffin so I will probably never own one like this. But my advice to anyone looking for a diesel motorhome, do your homework on all styles before writing the check!! Don’t do like me and buy the first one that trips your trigger.

After near fifty-years of fighting the big city way of life, I'm considering tossing in the towel, selling out, purchasing a semi-new coach and going into a full-time super-C setting myself. Thank you for a very fair and balanced Freightliner/Cummings Jayco Seneca review. I currently am I very satisfied 2008 Jayco Seneca owner who is ready to move up to a new or newer Freightliner Seneca. Since you have owned both versions (Kodiak and Freightliner) I am hoping you can compare their mountain pulling performance. My Kodiak performs well in the mountains (I-70 Co. through Pa.) and on paper looks stronger than the Freightliner version. Kodiak: 26,000lb. GCWR with 330HP = 79 lb./1hp. Freightliner: 33,000lb. GCWR with 340HP = 97lb./1hp (I don't have torque figures for both of them). Any real world experience going up OR downhill that you can share with me would be greatly appreciated.
@TheKuhlOdyssey
@TheKuhlOdyssey 6 жыл бұрын
I actually think the Kodiak climbed the big hills better than the Freightliner does. You can feel it is heavier and it shows on the long climbs. On the steepest hills, I normally stick around 45mph, I don't really like to push it. My Jeep Rubicon also weight close to 5700lbs, which is considerably heavier than my old Liberty that was only 4400lbs. That being said, I am not disappointed in the Freightliner, I think it still does well and does not seem to be working that hard to climb.
@rashburn01
@rashburn01 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the very descriptive reply. My gut told me that the lighter Kodiak might have the edge in mountain pulling as you confirmed but it's also reassuring to hear that the Freightliner climbs well enough to not be a deterrent from buying a newer model.

Probably way too late but... As a truck mechanic, I have installed many crossover lines, install a valve on each tank (Ball cock style not a tap) in case the line ruptures, use a 1" angle between the tank saddles and attach the line to that, 3/4 braided fuel line works great. that way if your transfer pump fails you will not run out of fuel with the passenger tank full... The cost is minimal and there should be taped ports at the ends of the tank that you can remove the plugs to install the valves and that will keep the crossover 1" above the bottom of the tank for Clarence.

As for your fueling needs, just pull into truck fueling at any major truck stop/travel center and you can fill both tanks simultaneously and with greater speed than the automobile diesel filling area. Im a semi driver so I know how having tanks on both sides of the vehicle is. You might piss off a trucker or two but they'll live.

We were looking at the 2018's with the S2RV chassis and was getting very excited until we read on almost the first page of the owner's manual that full-time RVing in them was not supported for warranty purposes, most disappointing to say the least considering we see quite a few of them come into the campground we currently manage. Now we are also considering the Valencia which has the same chassis with somewhat similar specs. We wish they were both a bit shorter for backcountry parking, but quality coaches in the shorter sizes are near impossible to find these days.
@TheKuhlOdyssey
@TheKuhlOdyssey 6 жыл бұрын
I do not think any RV manufacturer supports living in the units. They are meant to be "recreational vehicles". If you ask any one of them, they will say they are not made to be lived in and I would be willing to bet they all mention it be a warranty issue. The Velencia is also a great unit, a bit more of a hit on the pocketbook though.

I REALLY hope you figured this out by now, but honestly how in the world is the gas tanks an issue? Go to the truck stops, almost all trucks have dual fuel tanks, the pump is set for a slave pump on the other side. You can fill both tanks simultaneously from the one credit card swipe. It is beyond easy. PLUS they are high capacity high flow pumps so you can fill both tanks in about three and a half minutes. (Same size tanks on my truck, so I know the timing.) Good luck. I hope you do not take this as condescending, it is not intended that way.

Just don't like that I pay more for the fuel. Truck stops are more expensive about every single time. Convenient to fuel quickly and using two pumps, but it burns me to pay more.

The Kuhl Odyssey That is fair enough. I have personally only rarely seen fuel more expensive at truck stops. I have had good luck in the past. They have been easy, convenient, and the best price in most of the towns I visit. I get it though, ten cents a gallon adds up, especially if you had a pair of 150 gallon tanks. But even then it is only $30. So o guess I get over it.

Great review. We are on our 3rd C. We now have a 33' Forest River. On a E450 chassis. It handles better than our smaller C's. But it is still fatiguing. Can do about 3-4 hours driving max. Compared to driving your smaller C how is driving your Super, handling, hills, maneuverability etc? One thing you might consider is putting the Tv above the fireplace on an arm. It Gives you a better viewing angle and may solve the heat problem on the thermostat side. Did you consider any of the Nexus or Dynamax products when you were looking at your current Super C?
@TheKuhlOdyssey
@TheKuhlOdyssey 6 жыл бұрын
The Seneca drives very well, no problem with long days. Although I try to not do more than 2-3 hours in any move days anyway. I have recently done a couple of 8 hr drives and I felt fine upon arrival, no fatigue or anything. I did look at the Dynamax, just a little to far outside what I wanted my budget to be. Nexus floor plans really did not work for me.

+Bruce Watson putting on a new tabletop was definitely a consideration. Couple of things steered me to the free standing table. One was the ability to move it around and use it is different positions. I also wanted a place to keep my laptop and office supplies that was easy to use. The drawer in the writing desk works perfectly. The main thing that deterred me from that idea was the weight. The "dream dinette" is held to the wall with about 10 sheet metal screws. I was very worried that the extra weight of a new top and using it as a desk would pull it from wall causing big problems.

You mentioned gravel roads and boondocking off road. Is 4x4 capability something you would find useful in comparison to an otherwise comparable Super C?

It's not the size of the table, but the size of the plates. Get smaller plates, eat less, spend less. Then, by carrying less food in the fridge, you now have soooo much extra space for brewskis.

Does the passenger side fuel tank empty before the driver's side tank? Or do they more or less empty simultaneously? If the passenger side empties first, then one can stop to fuel up when half-empty and not have to bother with the driver's side. I understand this will not always be convenient, but could improve things for you. I just purchased a new Seneca 37FS and I haven't had time to test out this idea yet.
@TheKuhlOdyssey
@TheKuhlOdyssey 7 жыл бұрын
It has a system called "equiflow" that actually pumps fuel over from the passenger side to the drivers to keep the tanks more or less even. If you are driving under heavy load climbing hills and such, it barley keeps up. But, once you stop, within two to three moments it shuts off and has the tanks level. It is sort of a bummer, really the one frustrating thing about the rig.

I assume the RV quality adds to the resale value, as well as the purchase price. The features, collectively, add long term dependable value, which, to me, is a big plus. My brothers older RV, came complete with recommended travel routes, with repair shops being the key focus obviously, as most trips required a pit stop or two along the way.

Really liked this video - well done. Researching the Jayco Seneca (bunk model). Learned so much and appreciate the pros and cons and such great detail in what to consider. Can I ask your opinion on diesel vs. not - it used to be known that prices were cheaper, any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks again for taking the time to share :)

Glad you got some value from the video. As far as the super C goes, I have been happy to have the diesel engine. The extra torque makes long uphill climbs bearable. I have friends with gas engines and they often disconnect their tow vehicle and drive both vehicles up steep grades. While I still climb steep grades slowly, I am able to run at low RPM and the engine does great.

How underpowered was the Chevy vs the Freightliner? I see a lot of the Chevy Chassis for sale, but don’t think it will work as nice as the class 6 chassis’ offered by Freightliner or International. What are your thoughts since you have had both?

I had a 2005 Seneca and it had a bad problem with giving off fumes from the inside material and manufacturing process. If left closed on a hot day the fumes would burn your lungs and eyes. I used to run in and put the exhaust fans on and open the windows and run out while holding my breath. It took 10 or 15 minutes to clear out the bad air. I noticed the same smell on a newer unit at a RV show. Have you noticed any VOCs smell in your unit.

Hello and thank you for the review. I found this video interesting to say the least, as my wife and i are looking at either a Prevost 45' or, going with somethng along the lines of a Renegade Super C, and or Haulmark Super C. Trying to figure out in my mind about pulling a trailer, with a Jeep in it for travel once parked, and what's required as far as licensing and the what nots. Also, getting insurance on it, as i will be the main driver. Alot to think about when getting one. As i watched, i wondered why you did not get the factory to place a cross over pipe into the fuel system to stop the trouble you had with the little pump? Also, noticing that your no small fellow, no pun intended, with the bed slid in, what problems are you having getting into and out of bed? Your video adds to my thoughts about the layout of living room, and having guests come in and stay for awhile, and just how that layout should be handled. You give alot of into. that gives people something to think about. Do you pull a trailer with this, or, is it single. As this will be our first rv, never having owned one, here in Texas, it will require a class a being both truck and trailer will be over 26,000 pds. where to get experience driving mine, and then taking the test, which will be easy, as logic mixed with a little experience should make driving easier. All and all, well done. Thank you for the great video. SCOTTISHXPRIDE, TEXAS.

@TheKuhlOdyssey

I don't have anything with the underbed area. It is really just an all open area. The only thing down there is the slide in mechanism, the rest is just open space. The sides of the storage are attached to the floor and the platform slides on top.

Looking at Super C's for my mother, she wants to full time RV here soon as my father passed a couple yrs ago and all the children live on separate coasts. Been bouncing back and forth between the Seneca and the GS Supernova. In your opinion, how was the handling and comfort between the 2013 model and the 2006 model you had? Thanks.
@TheKuhlOdyssey
@TheKuhlOdyssey 7 жыл бұрын
+Justin Jacobs I think the handling is much better on the 2013. I think the Freightliner chassis is just a bit more robust than the Kodiak. It handles the wind like it is not even there. I think about of it has to do with the 22.5" tires vs the 19.5". The 2006 was not bad, just feel the larger chassis handles more smoothly.

Loved your video, Is the bedroom useable with the slide in? I was hoping your video would show that. Also, with the refrigerator so close to the passenger is it noisy going down the road (containers bouncing around in refig?) Is the cab area noisy/hot because of the engine?

@TheKuhlOdyssey 7 жыл бұрын
+Moira Jones the bed does go about 6" under the closet when the slide is in. I am 6' tall and can still sleep in the bed alright with it in. I have never really noticed and noise from the fridge, it all seems to stay pretty solid in there.

Man I do like the Seneca's a whole lot but looking at the prices for this rig I don't think I will be able to afford one of these without having a payment. I am currently living in a fifth wheel which I really like and I am comfortable in but it is too big for me (38 ft) so I am looking to switch over to a C or A and have been looking around.
@TheKuhlOdyssey
@TheKuhlOdyssey 7 жыл бұрын
Fifth wheels I think have a much more "homey" feel. My Seneca is also WAY big for just me know, but it is paid for so I have no plans to change at the moment. One day I would like to go much smaller, really would lean towards a small C of even an overland type rig to allow me to get even further out in nature.
@rvnut1133
@rvnut1133 7 жыл бұрын
Class C could probably work better but an Overland vehicle it is too small for me. I want to be comfortable. With that Jeep of yours a smaller C would be perfect. I do understand that it is difficult to change once your rig is all paid off.
