The reason the plaid seats and the golf ball shifter are there is a nod to the Mk. 1 GTi. They were features on the first versions of the GTi.

Connor Mohan I will take a look at Giac again I was looking at Unitronic or APR but yah that's the right amount of hp in my book and the quality interior I get with my car is just miles better than what I would have got with a BRZ. The only thing I gota make sure is to save enough that I can put better brakes cause those definitely are a weak point but I do a lot of momentum driving so I don't usually run into fade I just need more power for passing slowpokes and well just all around fun factor.

mynameisrits Now this is where you come as ignorant. Not a lot of imports come as "has great handling abilities." A lot of people think, "wow that's a fat ass boxy looking car, handles like shit." Here are some great handling American cars; Camaro Z28, Focus and Fiesta ST, Dodge Viper ACR, 2009 Corvette ZR1, I can go on and on. I'm not some proud all-American guy (even though I love to be American), I track a Honda S2000.
@hduncan2587
@hduncan2587 10 жыл бұрын
Michael Dao That's all well and good, but also realize the Focus and Fiesta are European bred, still. The Focus has always been a car that was European bred (albeit Mazda was where the Control Blade actually originated-- look back at the Cosmo). The Camaro is using Holden underpinnings from Australia, and besides all that, "handling" and "grip" aren't the same thing. A Mercury Marauder can do a sports-car like .86g on a skidpad, but it does a minivan-like slalom in the same test. Not to say a Viper and Corvette don't handle well, but the Viper in particular is a very crude car no matter who's reviewing it. It's a car about grip and not finesse-- and finesse is what really matters in the whole case of handling. What good is grip going one way if the transition the other way is a nasty one? I'm willing to bet your S2000 transitions well, albeit (if I remember right) the early AP1's were a bit twitchy... then again, so are the FR-S'.

mynameisrits Not for anywhere close to the same price. A bottom of the line Mustang V6 manual with its 305 hp and a standard limited slip for 23k will crush any European car that is 15k more on any medium sized track. The Boss Mustang will take out any sub 75k European Car. With its live rear axel.

These guys gave it to the BRZ because of the faster laps but I could care less about it. If I had the money I'd get the GTI and save myself $4k. The GTI has a better interior, it's all about touch points and daily drivability and the GTI has this in spades. The GTI also has a very powerful engine to compete with the BRZ so it's fun to drive as well. The GTI I test drove was a bit soft on handling and acceleration. I realize the turbocharger pre-spools, but there's still a short lag. The GTI is all about luxury lifestyle, the BRZ makes compromises, not to mention the rear seats are unusable. The only good thing about the BRZ besides the handling is the cheaper maintenance. I heard it cost $60 for an oil change at the VW stealership.
@MegaAngrygerman
@MegaAngrygerman 10 жыл бұрын
The BRZ's torque delivery is simply too little, too late. Around town during a test drive, it felt much weaker than the GTI. The GTI has always been a sporty car practical enough for daily use, and it shines compared to the BRZ. The Subaru WRX should also be considered. Not as practical as the GTI, but compared with the BRZ its much faster. About the oil changes: I have been driving VW's for years, and I just do it myself. Consult the owner's manual for the right kind of oil or look online, buy it at an auto parts store, then change it yourself. You could also buy a tool that resets the maintenance needed messages on the dash.

You're missing the point of the BRZ completely. This is an driving enthusiasts car that Jeremy Clarkson called the best car his driven in ages and his car of the year. This was a purpose built car for sliding around the track (something the GTI cannot do well) and having fun. To complain about it's lack of practicality and interior appointments is to miss the point. Anyone who actually has more fun in a GTI doesn't really know how to throw around a rear wheel drive car, because there is no comparison: the BRZ is a more fun enthusiast's car and it's not close.

The GTI is a nice hatch if you need one, but the BRZ is just an other dimension of sport car. The better comparision for the brz is the cayman, which feels very similiar to the brz, but with more performance in any way, except in fun on driving on very twisty roads, its just easier to have fun without the need of pushing it hard in the brz.I own both btw.

+James Lovett about similar to the GTI. GTI feels faster because it has more down low torque which is easily accessible traffic light to traffic light but when you ring out both engines they both will output similar straight line performance and also the BRZ would be more fun to ring out because it has a much higher red line since it's a NA engine.

Surprised that the GTI steering was commented on positively - it is one of the main changes for the MkVII. Braking in the GTI, fair comments and hopefully a place for the MkVII to improve, but also an easy mod if not. I am a fan of the BRZ/FR-S, I think it is great that they have done this - will be interesting to see what they do with the mid cycle refresh.

The BRZ is like a chest-less prom date. Sure it looks good, until you see what's under the dress, and then you realize she doesn't want to put out. There are better cars at this price point. The BRZ/FRS is a car that does a few things very well because it was built for a specific purpose. But I can get better performance and everyday practicality out of (insert hot hatch here). If you want a 2dr. RWD car, then save your money a while longer and get something with a motor to match it's looks. Hell just get a 2015 WRX with a manual trans. More performance, AWD, and in that same price point. I don't hate this car, but there are FAR BETTER options out there.

The WRX drives like a truck in comparison to the BRZ. People like cars like the BRZ, Miata and Cayman because they drive like go karts. They have instantaneous response from user input that you don't get in economy based performance cars like the WRX or GTI which to be honest are nothing more than modded economy boxes. You are missing the point if you don't understand why someone would prefer a BRZ over a WRX. Is the WRX more fast in a straight line than BRZ? Sure but you feel more disconnected in the WRX with its rather lazy steering, higher center of gravity, heavier weight and sloppy 6 speed.
@BarryisLost
@BarryisLost 8 жыл бұрын
With all due respect, you totally missed my point too. Those cars are good in their own right, but they are in NO WAY practical for day to day use. I can't haul my boys around in a miata. I cant fit my 80 pound dog in an FRS/BRZ. And at what one costs new? I can do better for the price.
@farhan007
@farhan007 8 жыл бұрын
K. So I guess you can do better for the price pitting a 458 Italia against a WRX because the WRX will do those things you want better than the Ferrari. No one said that the BRZ is the better all rounder. The BRZ is undoubtedly the better second car than a WRX though. If I own a already practical awd SUV and looking for a second car, why the hell would I chose a WRX over a BRZ as my weekend fun car? The WRX is a better daily driver. The BRZ is a better sports car. Sports cars aren't practical.

Actually drove a GT86/BRZ/FRS today, and I have a MK6 Golf myself. Did not get to push the Toyota on any good roads really, but got to test it abit, did some drifts etc on an industrial area. The Toyobaru is probably a lot more fun to drive, and easier to upgrade. But in terms of quality, the golf is MILES better. I drove on a pretty big public road, and the Navigation could not even find the road. The road noise is almost unbearable compared to the Golf at 50~ Miles per hour. And the golf is even last gen, and has bigger wheels/lower profile tires. And also, the golf has a turbo, so with a tune on it, it easily gets 50~hp more, and with an exhaust and a manifold you'll get 100hp. For that you need a 5-6k kit on the Toyobaru. For pure driving, id rather have the Toyobaru. But to live with, since I almost could not bare with it for the 30 mins I was driving. Id go with the German, all day every day.

I was interested to hear them make a judgement on which is the better car overall. Though I suppose since they are so fundamentally different that would be a difficult decision to make. I guess the GTI camp should be proud that they were just 2 ticks behind a car that was designed for the track and sacrifices all daily driver attributes to do so.
@somanymods
@somanymods 10 жыл бұрын
The GTI really isn't a ton faster than the BRZ. Motortrend got 14.9@94.4 from a BRZ, 14.8@94.3 from an FR-S and 14.7@95.8 from a GTI with DSG. It just feels faster because of the torque. I guess on the track the torque would matter more than in a drag race though.
@Kev50027
@Kev50027 10 жыл бұрын
Torque is a big deal everywhere. Anyone who has ever driven a Mazda RX-8 knows that horsepower doesn't really matter that much at all, without torque your car feels sluggish. That's what's so great about turbochargers. If tuned correctly, they offer peak torque at very low RPMs.
@fatboy19831
@fatboy19831 10 жыл бұрын
Kev50027 Cars may feel sluggish. In fact they are not. Turbos with very good bottom end have a problem. Poor top end. Yes a very well designed turbo (the GTI being one of the best) will be faster around town. Between 5000 rpm and its redline it is at a disadvantage over free-er breathing N/A high winding 4's. The RX-8 is faster than the GTI balls out. The BRZ is much slower than the GTI around town. Keep the BRZ above 5000 rpm and it is just as fast as the GTI. The GTI makes 30 more real world hp than the BRZ and almost 100 lb-ft more torque. The GTi's torque advantage disappears quickly at high rpm were the BRZ's torque remains strong past 7000 rpm.. The GTI is 400 pounds more. So both cars have about the same PTW ratio. Point being that in a drag race the cars are evenly matched. On the track the BRZ has an advantage. I am talking about manual cars. The VW DSG has an advantage in acceleration that the BRZ can not overcome.
@candymancody2688
@candymancody2688 10 жыл бұрын
fatboy19831 I agree with all of that, however, on a dyno most mk6 gti's make about 220 whp (See APR's dyno test results of stock 2013 gti). VW and other german brands under-estimate their horsepower ratings. Even though you lose the torque between about 6000-7000, there's plenty of horsepower afterwards which is why the trap speed is higher on the gti then the brz, as in the motortrend comparison above.
@fatboy19831
@fatboy19831 10 жыл бұрын
Cody Angstadt Again that is for the DSG car. Manual BRZ vs Manual GTI are dead even in an all out drag race. The 25 or so more hp comes with 400 pounds of mass. The DSG GTI is an amazing car (when it works correctly).

If you're struggling to figure out if you should purchase a GTI or brz(frs,86) then i have a solution. Get the GTI or fiesta st for daily driving. Seems like the most pratical thing for a normal human with friends that love fun cars. You can buy a new 2017 GTI s (plaid interior for about $22k). And buy an older miata for the track for 2-5k depending on year and condition and use that for the track. a 2017brz is about 27k or 29k for performance package with brembos. I'd rather have a good daily and a fun track car that wont break the bank. brz is just too impractical and expensive for a normal middle class person that wants a fun daily. Great car, great engineering, but too expensive unless you buy used and find a great deal. but if you got the money then you go for it.

The only reason the GTI is a "rocket ship" in a straight line is because those little tiny turbos produce a bit of boost because theyre so small this is also why the GTI will pass the BRZ because the turbo just brings more torque into the car because it takes no effort to spool them up. Ive driven an audi a4 2.0T and trust me after 70ish mph it takes a while to get up towards 100mph. This comparison is stupid one is a 2 door coupe while the other is a 5 door hatchback. Dont take my words above to harsh theyre both amazing cars and have potential for massive power but theyre to different from eachother

I own two VWs, both with DSG tansmissions. One has about 60,000 miles on it and one has about 40,000 miles, and I haven't had any issues with the cars.

Actually the DSG is very reliable. My sister has a 2006 Jetta TDI DSG with 200,000 miles on it. It shuddered in town when it was new, so she took it to VW to get reflashed, now it is great in the city. My uncle now have a 2012 Jetta TDI DSG and it shuddered in town, he took it to VW, they reflashed it and it was great.

Suggest though really only the PDK is better - the speed of up and down on the DSG is amazing. I drive manual myself but just because I enjoy shifting gears - DSG though is very quick and I was tempted by the added tech despite the $1000 extra cost.

AutoGuide.com That would be even more appreciated, actually when I drove Fiesta ST, I felt it was way way better than Focus ST, even though it didnt have more than 200 hp it felt nearly as fast or faster than Focus over corners In my mind Fiesta ST has only 1 -ve thats the interior design which is confusing to use, if I am to be critical the ride was very firm as well, but all is forgiven before its stellar performance

The Fiesta ST is just as much fun as the BRZ..... Many test on the net...... It could go ether way. The BRZ is a better handling car- The Fiesta has more torque and better tires. It is also 50 pounds lighter than the BRZ. The BRZ power band is better suited for the track. I loved the Fiesta ST I drove. I liked the ride and the steering. I hated the Focus ST. Gear box and clutch was remote it was very difficult to launch traction control on or off. Torque steer is a problem also.

Why is the gti not auto trail breaking? The gti is not is no where a rocket in the straights. The feel in the wheel is non existant. Your inpressions review could not be further from the truth. You should also run them head to head and see which one passes the other.

GTI FTW, lets be realistic, on the road they will both take a corner, and rolling start with either car, gti is gonna win, and not forgetting, vw has under powered so that the new owner has the opportunity to chip, induction, or even exhaust system to unleash its potential, brz is shit!
@DevasionX

Emmanuel George and so the BRZ is underpowered, turbo it up and tune it and it rocks 450 horsepower.
@emmanuelgeorge7199
@emmanuelgeorge7199 9 жыл бұрын
DevasionX taken into consideration the gti has a very tiny turbo, unlike its bigger brother, the R, which also has a little turbo... a fair size would be gt28- gt30, and then the gti would be a complete different story...
@DevasionX
@DevasionX 9 жыл бұрын
Emmanuel George what also plays a role is inertia and compression rate, the Boxer engine has very little to no vibration and has a compression rate of i assume 11 or 12 to 1, which an engine that is factory turbo-ed has around 8 or 9 to 1. the gti engine is power wise more dependable of its turbo.

Despite the nice reviews, I'd probably never buy a BRZ. Why? Coz even though I showed unflinching loyalty to my local Scooby "un-dealership" they still wouldn't let me test drive one. They seem to have a ton of pre-owned ones now with about 20k miles on em... is this just my area (New England), or that particular dealership? Do people generally hang on to their BRZs? What about FRSs? Ok so this comment went from a gripe to a question...

I came here because I'm looking for my next car and a BRZ and VW are on the list (yes I know this is from 4yrs ago), but w/in the first few minutes I realized this was typical AG nonsense. I'm not sure what passes as auto-journalism in Canada because this is downright bad - even the Straight Pipes are better and I can't stand them (mostly Yuri). "track like" is very different from "daily life". I'm in 14yo Mk4 GTI and I'm looking to see if there is anything out there to get me out of a VW (Honda and Mazda make good arguments too) and the BRZ is on the list because it can be had w/3 pedals. Well, I guess it is on to the next video as this one didn't answer any questions.

What makes you two qualified to review cars? Anyone who has any knowledge of automotive history knows the "Golf" ball shift knob harkens back to the original. Secondly, your comment that rear wheel drive cars handled horribly made prior to 1990? Seriously? Porsche 944/Turbo, 928....I could go on, but it's not my job to educate clueless reviewers..... Sorry, but your credibility is shot.
