I don't know why folks are always trying to paint prius drivers as eco snobs. I'm interested in one because of Toyota's legendary reliability and yes, it gets great gas mileage!

I have to say that it's really stupid and pointless how he keeps pointing out the fact that it isn't quick. It's not a sports car, nor is it trying to be. That would be like me reviewing a Smart Car and bitching that it's too small for family's when that's not its target. I like the Prius but I give this review a thumbs down.

The Prius is reasonably quiet, excepting when I have my real estate signs clunking around in the back. It's nice for hauling customers around, reasonably comfortable. My 2006 gets 42 mpg, my 2004 got 40. I sold that one at 200k, trading up because I didn't want to replace the batteries. They have that problem solved now too. As for "slow". I never have any problems in the fast lane, when do you really get to open that Tesla up anyway, never. I have cruised to LA from the Bay Area at 80 many times, no problem, and amazingly maintain the 40 mpg at that speed. Slow is a fiction, who ever gets to do a quarter mile in 6 seconds anyway, not in my town.

I love my Prius. I sat 4 plus me comfortable on a 4 hour drive up north and no one person complained. They said they were comfortable and enjoyed the smooth quiet ride. Yes I have a Prius package 4 so maybe that makes a difference. And I have never had a car so dependable before. I have owned 2 Prius and neither one had any problems at all. Not true with the Hyundai's or Kia's I have owned. And I am one to trade every 2 to 3 years. But the Prius is here to stay this time.

I just recently got one of these (same year, even) - sure, it has 178,000 miles on it, but it still runs like new, with the only two times it broke down for the previous owners being a flat tire and a dead 12V battery. Sure beats the 2009 G6 I had before that ate two timing chains and two transmissions in 100k miles.

Honestly I zip around in my Prius with little hold back in acceleration and my avg mpg is 50+ year round! Right now it’s 52.2! Last time I did a long 70+ mph road trip I got almost 65mpg while passing people on the interstate! And in PWR mode, it’s more fun to drive than any other compact car I’ve had AND still gets the same mpg! I just test drive the 2019 MAZDA3 for comparison, and was surprised by how great my Prius is!!

I just obtained a Prius gen 3 and if Toyota had explained that e-CVT is a completely misleading abbreviation, and truly it’s a revolutionary and robust automatic transmission wrapped in a car shape, I’d have bought one around ten years ago. I have an engineering background, and in the 1980’s tried to figure out how a differential setup, could be turned into a variable transmission. What I didn’t think of doing, was putting a gasoline engine on one of the shafts, and an electric motor-generator on each of the other two shafts. Yes, I see you, synergy drive. Great idea, begun in Berkeley University, then the concept was owned by General Motors for a while, who sold the patent to Toyota. It has no cones, no friction surfaces connecting and disconnecting, no pulleys or belts - completely, zero like a CVT as we all know it. There is a clutch, but it’s an emergency thing, for extremely infrequent occasions, hence you cannot tow, because it won’t let you tow much. I have had it ‘pop’ once in a while, it’s a quirk to do with having the cruise control on, but having to briskly unexpectedly halt eg like ‘surprise’ road works, etc. Then one of the motor-generators I believe, has some inertia to get rid of unexpectedly, and it does so by thumping this emergency clutch arrangement, shunting it round maybe just an inch or two. This quirk, goes right back to the origin of the transmission, in a differential concept. I found all sorts of issues when I tried to imagine it, back in the 1980’s as an engineering student, but Toyota have answered about every single one. It’s a brilliant refinement of the original design. I’ve had a lot of auto transmissions pack-in on me! Repair shops are hard to get that do a good job, and I have never once been satisfied with the end result, something always trashes the car soon after. So if I need an automatic transmission -,and for arthritis reasons, sciatica type issues I do - then this really is the absolutely most robust choice, and we now know, 11 years after this vid was made, 200,000 miles to 400,000 miles, is achievable just by changing the trans fluid every 40k miles or so. That is not the case, for any of the friction-surface based automatic transmissions, and everything else, is exactly that. The only better transmission, is the other fixed-meshed-gears systems like EVs have eg Tesla. At 60 and retired, this is my first Toyota. It has caused me to entirely re-evaluate the brand upwards. I don’t get 55mpg, I have just nursed it to it’s first 50mpg run, mostly urban, but the economy varies very little for me, even on our UK motorways (freeways/interstate roads). There are spells at speeds above 69mph (!) and even this doesn’t really dent the economy. I did a full car to Newcastle in the North, with a student daughter for her moving-in, and it was 49.8mpg. This is a 13-year-old car. Aircon was on all the time, not by much though. Speaking of which, this is the very first car where the interior airfilter actually works, filtering out smells, and I didn’t put in a carbon element either. The main reason for buying a hybrid is, in 2023 electricity is way more expensive, putting it in the same bracket as gasoline over here, in effect. And, more importantly, in a cold country, the heat output of that ICE is very comforting, and indeed a safety matter, if we walk in the hills and come back to drive home. I drove a Tesla and my feet got frozen, they insist on a single-slot air channel at chest height. I hope Toyota can weather this transition to EVs, they deserve to. Take care all.

I live in Tennessee. It does fine in the winter, but in the summer the air conditioner makes the engine run when it would otherwise be shut off at stops. I guess the air conditioner would also be running if you were defrosting in the winter. I turn the blower off a lot of times when I come to a stop light.

Granted, the Toyota Prius isn't for everyone. But that said, it makes sense on a lot of levels. (1) You're getting Toyota's badge of reliability which is a plus. (2) With the price of gas these days, getting a whopping 50 mpg is certainly good news. (3) I'm not exactly Mr. Environment. But it makes sense to build cars out of recycled materials because it leaves less waste around.

+Umer Farooq Depends on the Prius. Prius C, V or regular prius. Regular Prius handles well, don't notice any wind noise in mine and road bumps, it handles well. I'd say like a typical full size sedan. Its not rough nor bouncy when hitting a bump. Prius C, you get blown around on the road a lot, hear more wind/road nose and doesn't handle bumps as well. Still a decent car though.

Tire noise is a little more noticeable, but maybe just because of the decreased engine noise... Wind noise is low because of its design... And it's well designed with comfort in mind on the interior

I drive a Prius Two 2015 for 10 hours a day doing Uber/Lyft and I'm impressed with the 47-51 mpg I achieve daily. I've had plenty of compliments from my passengers about how comfortable the back seat is. They cannot believe how roomy and quiet this vehicle is. You'll hear some road noise at high speeds, but this can be treated with some low cost undercarriage coating.

It's going to be less comfy than your maxima. it's an ecomony car not af ull size family car. But it will be a lot more smooth driving wise. There's not windnoise. Mine has a tad because of repairs to right fender.

when you pay high gas price for a gallon of gas. you will like Toyoto much more and kiss your Prius everyday. sometime people just don't like to change. look at the sale of hybrid in Japan. they are 85% global sale of hybrid vehicle. every vehicle will be hybrid in around 2020, but many automaker will avoid using the name hybrid. the stop/star will be standard for every gas engine vehicle, that is the fastest way to boost MPG. it will use a small Lithium-ion battery to power a small motor to crack the engine after the car is in "stop/star" mode and recharge the battery during braking. the exceed juice will power all the accessory. hey. that is what under hood of the Prius, but smaller scale. lol

@JGMURPY1 They do, the Citroen DS5 and Peugeot 3008 hybrid are diesel hybrids, but are not as good in economy, but really close considering that both are large heavy cars. Volvo's C/V/S60 Plug in hybrid gets +150mpg (imp gallon). I'm guessing most makers don't make diesel hybrids is that both diesel and hybrid are expensive and a diesel exhaust system takes up more space than a petrol's.

Driving the Prius feels slower than it's capability, because the throttle is tuned to get the most out of your fuel. 1/4 throttle on the Prius is not like 1/4 throttle of a normal gas car with the same 134hp. If you step on it, it will suffice for nearly all traffic situations. Otherwise it would not have been such a popular car in the US.

Buying Prius to save the environment a little makes sense specially in cities like LA or NYC, buying Prius to save money on the fuel is stupid because you are not saving jack shit for the price you pay for the car. Cars like Elantra, Mazda 3, Focus, or even Dart all have better design, more power and lower prices. The difference between the prices & the saving on the fuel is almost the same, well I hope u drive a lot to get your money worth.

deal with it haters. Prius is here to stay whether you like it or not. It is, in fact, the future, because Mitigation is the future. The move towards alternatives like electric vehicles, hydrogen power, solar power, coal powered, etc. are too optimistic. With the way economy is behaving, those alternatives won't be going mainstream any time sooner. So grow up, and learn to accept the truth.

it is a practical everyday ho-hum car but after renting out a Kia Optima Hybrid for five days... it's night and day between those cars with the Kia spanking the Prius' arse.
