I don't think it was unusual but unusual for espresso, it was mainly a filter / brew coffee grinder. Now we have more unimodal burr designs and a lot more choices.

Does anyone know why he didn't take 1st? I've watched both Perger's and Licata's presentations and I'd say that Perger took it hands down. His descriptors, knowledge and assertiveness all seemed to be on point, whereas I saw Licata as being more noticeably stressed and vague.
