wow - Xu Xin's coverage of his backhand side, when he tries to hit forehand from that side - if you see his footwork gets all messed up when coming too deep to backhand from forehand... Zhang Jike illustrates this cleverly in the match that I could see...

zyn [13:30]: xuxin's backhand, for his inside the table (short balls), does he play pushes/defensive or reverse penhold [zyn asking about xuxin's play style]? yy:reverse penhold. zyn: so you can see he hasn't pushed (defensive plays) on serves (first ball), he probably think he can get his hand on the ball. [ie, if his pushes are not of good quality, it'll open up for zjk to attack, so he can't attack first]

zyn [15:51] Paddle direction is pointed down. Women can do this too, but not as effective, when the paddle is pointed down, there's not a lot of wrist power to lift the ball up, men do this with ease. (she trailed off a bit, I think zyn mentioned this can cause tennis elbow.)

Zhang Yining is excellent but YY also says one thing right (which is rare). Penholer needs to have speed to get to the top. She listed a couple of male Olympic champions as examples. And XX is indeed too far away from the table and not fast enough. However, with 40mm ball the speed of the ball is ~20% slower and it's tough for penholder to gain the edge purely on speed+forehand. That's why all short-pips/pen holder are disappearing even in Chinese men's team.

zyn 10:44: xuxin can play the game a bit more complex, he can open and serve with underspin, attack on underspin, maybe try opening his attacks on short balls.[11:15} xuxin's movements are pretty big....movements are pure, and covers a lot of the table [with forehand], his attacks are sometimes destructive sometimes not very effective.

zyn 5:23 zjk should put a bit more placement on xuxin's forehand, so that xuxin won't have opportunity to side-step and control zjk by counter-loops.

If you see all match, Zhang Jike can control almost game with his ball placement. But Xuxin look worried about his chance to attack.

zhangyining 4:07-4:15 - xuxin's play has more coordination (flexible, dexterity)...zhangjike is very typical muscular type, good bounce on his feet.

People mistakenly believe zhang Jike performance of recent times is not good. But I do not really believe that. results against Baum, Xu Xin has said it all. However, the match against Wang Hao will not be easy as the previous finals. The blow Wang Hao's backhand is very strong. Ma Long but lost because of these shots

[12:17] xuxin still a bit less firm with his play (maybe a bit worried inside)...zjk doesn't much a lot, but whenever he moves, he, for sure, makes all the placement at the most awkward places for xuxin, for example, place it where his torsos are, forehand corners...[13:05] this is too tough of a move [for xuxin] straight down the line, and still try to counter with a straight down the line [especially for his backhand area].

zhangyining 1:38 - Men's team have arch nemesis pairs (original: mutually restrictive pairs) for example, Wanghao is tough against zjk, malong is better toward zjk, xuxin is a new force, haven't paid as much attention. It'll depend on his performance.

zyn [14:53]: xuxin still hasn't found a break-through point....(generally talking xuxin's push was too conservative, so that the balls went into the net. show how he is unsure of his plays, meaning trying to control more of his pushes, ie make it as short as possible)...zyn [15:23] xuxin receiving the server shouldn't try to receive and step back at the same time, not really a good idea.

Zhang iswas too lucky in this match. And it seems that the condition of Xu Xin was not good. Maybe one reason was he changed his blade and did not play as good as usual.
