Le chemin de fer à voie étroite de Rongshan
La voie étroite (762mm) de Rongshan est utilisée pour le transport de charbon et des prisonniers de la prison de Shanziba. Les prisonniers ont extrait le charbon dans les mines de Shanziba et Yujiaban, terminus de la ligne.
Courant 2010 une loi gouvernementale visant à interdire l'utilisation de prisonniers dans la mine marqua le début de la fermeture de la prison ; et les mines perdirent leurs mains-d'œuvre. Les prisonniers furent déplacés dans d'autres jusqu'en 2012 date de fermeture de la prison. Comme les mines produisent une quantité suffisante la ligne et les mines ne sont pas fermées. Mais jusqu'à quand ?...
La ligne débute au point le plus bas, Rongshan, elle est longue de 7.5kms et serpente dans la vallée jusqu'à son terminus Yujiaban (Xiaoheli dans Google Earth). Au deux tiers de la ligne se situe Shanziba, où se trouve la prison vide et une première mine. La route est trop étroite pour que les camions atteignent la mine, ce qui préserve le chemin de fer.
La ligne appartient désormais à 55% à la société de la compagnie des mines & charbon du Sichuan, et 45% à l'administration de la province du Sichuan. Il semble que les autorisations de visites vont être plus « ouvertes », l'administration voyant le succès de la transformation touristique de la ligne de Shibanxi.
Et Rongshan demain ? Ni les cheminots, ni l'administration n'a de réponse. Il semble certain, cependant, que le chemin de fer deviendra bientôt une attraction touristique à la classe moyenne de Guangyan, ville voisine de 20 kms. Il est probable que la ligne ne restera pas dans son état actuel intact pendant longtemps. Comme Shibanxi aujourd'hui, en 2010 nous étions invités par les habitants eux-mêmes à partager le repas ; maintenant le matériel a été repeint, les gares reconstruites avec des boutiques. Chaque week-end des centaines de touristes de Chengdu inonde la vallée de Shibanxi et piétinent négligemment à travers les champs des agriculteurs locaux lors des arrêts photos. Là, ils laissent les cultures écrasées et les restes d'une population de la ville, pour qui tout semble être comme Disneyland.

The narrow gauge railway of Rongshan
The 762 mm narrow gauge line of Rongshan used tor transport coal from mines which were operated by prisoners. Maybe it also brought the prisoners to the mines some decades ago. Prisoners mined the coal in the mines of Shanziba and Yujiabian at the terminus of the line.
In the year 2010 a new government law forbid the use of unskilled workers for dangerous jobs which also means prisoners in the mine. The mines subsequently lost their work force. The prisoners were moved to other prisons until 2012. As the mines are still producing a good amount of coal, skilled coal mines too over the work. The railway is still in use as well. But for how long?
The line starts at the lowest point of the railway in Rongshan. It's 7.5 km long and winds through a scenic valley until it reaches the terminus in Yujiabian (Google Earth calls this site Xiaoheli). After two thirds of the line you'll find Shanziba with the nowadays empty prison and a coal mine. The road is too narrow to allow trucks to carry the coal from the mines. This is what protected the railway from being closed until now.
The new owner of the railway is the province owned coal company which holds 55% of the shares while the old prison administration of the Sichuan province still holds the remaining 45%. It seems the authorities will issue the necessary permit for the area easier soon. They also know about the success of the tourist operation in Shibanxi.
And Rongshan's future? Neither the railroad employees nor the administration know the answer. It seems certain, however, that the railroad will soon become a tourist attraction to the middle class of the nearby city of Guangyuan, just 20 km from Rongshan. It is likely that the line will not stay in its current state for long. As Shibanxi today, in 2010 we were invited by the people to share their meal; now the rolling stock is repainted and all major stations are newly reconstructed and holding many shops. Every weekend hundreds of tourists from Chengdu flood the valley of Shibanxi and walk through the fields of the local farmers for getting a picture of the railway. Many of them just drop their rubbish behind them and consider this railway and the beautiful surroundings to be something like Disneyland.
