Welcome to the Trick Shift Garage! In this video, we're going to show you (step-by-step) how to change the oil on your Chevrolet/GMC Truck or SUV that has a 5.3 Liter L83 Ecotec3 Engine! You can apply this video if you own any of the following vehicles:
2014 - 2018 Chevrolet Silverado
2015 - 2019 Chevrolet Suburban
2015 - 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe
2014 - 2018 GMC Sierra
2015 - 2019 GMC Yukon XL
2015 - 2019 GMC Yukon
The overall process of changing the oil on these vehicles is pretty easy and straightforward but this video provides extra insights for if you are new to changing oil on these vehicles. The first step is to lift the vehicle up, I used ramps to drive up on that way there's plenty of room. Next, grab your 15 wrench or socket, your drain pan and an oil filter wrench and loosen the drain plug, make sure the drain pan is all the way over by the driver side because the oil will shoot across pretty far! Once the oil has drained, loosen the oil filter right next to the drain plug hole and let the oil drain out first, then remove the filter. Next, grab your new filter (PF63 for ACDelco) and pour oil in the filter to allow oil pressure to recover quickly on first start up. Also put some oil around the oil filter gasket to ensure a better seal by allowing you to tighten it better. Next, with your new filter crawl under and screw the new filter on hand tight only, do not use a filter wrench. If you over tighten it, the gasket could rupture and you could get an oil leak, or you could strip the threads! Once the new filter is on, go ahead and clean up the drain plug and make sure the threads are good, the bolt head isn't stripped and the rubber seal looks good. Screw it back into place and tighten to 18 ft lbs or torque or hand tight if you don't have a torque wrench. Next, step is to spray everything down with brake cleaner and wipe off any oil around the drain plug or oil filter. This will help you spit any leaks. Then, come up on the top side and pour 8 quarts of 0W-20 synthetic oil. I used Mobil 1 high mileage synthetic as my truck's engine has over 75k miles. Pour in 8 quarts and screw the oil cap back in place. At this point your ready to start it up! While your in there you can reset your oil life monitor by going to oil life monitor screen and holding the check button on your steering wheel until a beep occurs (takes about 3 seconds). If you don't have that, turn the vehicle to the ON position with the engine off, press the brake pedal 3 times holding the pedal down on the 3rd press and that should reset it too. Turn the vehicle off and let it sit for 5 minutes and then you can check the oil level to make sure it's good and that's it you're all set!!!
