Fascinating to see the impact gun used for nearly all bolts. Remember changing clutches on a Marina and a Land Rover. No power steering or air con to get in the way! I assume the DMF was wrecked, hence the angle grinder? I totally admire that you can remember which bolts go where! Regards Charles

This is great work, I remember I decided to change the clutch on my car after I made a mistake buying a very bad car. And that happened to be the first thing I ever did to a car, not brakes, or oil, or air filter, but the clutch. :) Seeing you do multiple ones per day on this channel is amazing. So many of the fasteners on VAG vehicles these days (according to the factory service manual) are one time use only. I would imagine this would apply to a good majority of the hardware removed to perform this job. I’d be interested to hear your professional take on this. Is VAG just having us on to make more money selling parts? Clearly you do these sort of repairs in your sleep and reuse the hardware all the time without issue, no?

Great video Kevin, this is the first one of yours I've seen but I'll certainly be watching more, you make it look easy! Quick question though, why remove the cup out of the gearbox after you removed the driveshaft? Could that not stay in the gearbox or does it get in the way when removing the box?
@WMCS4 жыл бұрын
That’s correct. With that driveshaft flange in situ .., it’ll be a real struggle getting past the flywheel. And a greater chance of Bering the gearbox shield which if distorted can scrape in the flywheel causing all sorts of noise. ✨✨✨

Hello, thanks for the video. Are you sure of your gearbox oil replacement procedure ? Because as you do, not all oil goes out, In VAG procedure you have to open another hole under the box and the refill is from the up (reverse contact sensor hole), not by the hole you used, also you have to turn and push a small lever (you can see it at 16:51) on top of the box . You purged a small amount of oil i think whereas the gearbox takes 1.9 liters. The correct oil level is above the hole you used for refill. So for those who watch this video, check the correct procedure.
@WMCS2 жыл бұрын
Flipping heck dick 😁.. 2 L of oil in the gearbox and that is it. Drain plug .., well that drains the oil out .. you don’t need a university degree for that
@GEO-422 жыл бұрын
The VAG procedure for gearboxes after 2013 from golfdave on golf 7 forum: FIRST & Highly Important!:- You need to FIRST lock the selector mech with the little black lever handle, this is on the top side of gearbox case. Put selector in neutral & push down a small amount & feel with the other hand for the indent whilst turning the small black locking lever from 9 o’clock to 12 o’clock. If you do not do this you will lose the position of the gear selector mech in the gearbox & you are in for a tow job to the dealers!! 2. Using a 17mm hex undo the main rear drain plug & collect the oil in a suitable container. 3. After the above has fully drained remove the pivot pin plug (bolt requires T-Star T45). Allow the oil to fully drain from here. Once this has drained, fit new o-ring (VW part no. N90362001) to the plug shank. Lightly lube the plug & “O”-ring with new gearbox oil, & use a small amount of medium strength thread lock (blue Loctite) on the bolt. Replace the plug & torque bolt (25Nm/18lbft). 4. Clean threads, & replace the main drain plug & torque (35Nm/26lbft) 5. Now you can unlock (turn the black lever handle back to 9 o’clock) the selector mech & make certain it is in neutral to avoid damaging the reverse light switch. 6. Remove the reverse light switch (undo connector easy by squeezing top of tab into body), & then use a 22mm spanner or long socket. 7. Using a 10mm dia max (external) hose (18inch or 50cm) & funnel, insert hose into the hole for the reverse light switch & slowly pour in the new oil (this takes ages..so kneel on floor on cushion...)..(measure out the oil beforehand & pour no more than the stated amount for your gearbox) 8. Refit the reverse light switch & use some blue hymolar on it (flex gasket/sealant)...torque up (20Nm/15lbft). I used a 22mm diesel injector tall socket (also does Lambda sensors) & reconnect the reverse light switch.

when you do VAG cars do you use the correct gearbox oil , meaning from genuine VAG stuff ? seems that with VAG cars unless using the genuine vag stuff you get strange noises and often notchy gearboxes. also mixing the oils is suppose to be a massive no no. ive just changed my gearbox and i ended up fully draining the box and using some febi stuff from euros which seems pretty good so far. P/S - is that new flywheel cracked? is that what you was pointing at before sticking the clutch on
@WMCS4 жыл бұрын
That’s the brand Sachs. You can’t mix and match parts on VAG engines. Either it’s Sachs or LUK as a set. .. I use MTF fully synthetic lubricant.., it’s not oil per say... 75w90 the ideal viscosity due to small quantity it takes.

I have the same A3 8V model like in the video, replaced recently everything on the gearbox (flywheel and clutch) and also replaced gerlarbox fluid, but now I have like a clinging noise when in neutral or while driving really slow. When I realy slightly press the clutch pedal the noise goes away... One thing I noticed when the mech replaced everything is he put some other gearbox fluid instead of 75w80/90 and only two bottels... Could it be because of the wrong fluid type and too litlle fluid? Thanks in advanced...
@WMCS2 жыл бұрын
2L is the correct amount.. 75w90 should be the correct oil. What you’re describing I’d pretty much say it’s the gearbox shield touching the back of the flywheel.. it will cause a bit of a scraping noise. ..

Hmmm strange... When it comes to the fluid I am 100% sure he didn't put W80 or W90, and the noise it's almost like two coins rattleing. Slight press to the clutch (not full down) and it goes away... 34:10 I wouldnt use red rubber grease here because it has a fairly low melting point. I would use ceramic grease which would be superior to red rubber in this application - very high melting point temperature. On the other hand red rubber grease is perfect for protecting any kind of rubber and it is not affecting brake fluid compatible rubbers as well.

Very true about the grease’s melting point... what I’m primarily trying to achieve is the decrease in bolt oxidisation between the threads... once the box mates with the engine block that bolt hole would now be sealed trapping the grease in between.., it won’t be hot enough to melt for love nor money ...

@@WMCS I wouldnt be concerned about threads but the spline and the arm support point. Seems ceramic grease could be used almost everywhere
