emdec55 because gasoline refineries get favors from the government that diesel refineries don't. So diesel is more expensive than regular gasoline.
@davidcd396
@davidcd396 10 жыл бұрын
Amidat No, not true. Diesel and gasoline all come from the same people. Diesel and gasoline all come from crude oil. It's just not economical for diesel to be the primary fuel used. It's impossible for diesel to be the major fuel because oil produces more gasoline than diesel, it's not because it's supported by government. If anything, diesel gets more favors. Diesel is supported by government tax benefits in many European nations. If more European countries had neutral taxation, diesel would become less popular in Europe.
@Amidat

dave cd yes because Europeans have enough sense to support the vehicles/fuel that will be more efficient.

Just drove two Audi A6's of this generation today. They were 2.0 TDI versions with 177 bhp and multitronic (cvt) transmission. I agree with the pro's and cons. The interior is very well built, the seats are nice, and the audio / mmi system (you have to pick the big screen, there is also a 5.5 inch variant) works like a charm. However, the transmission is not fast, the steering wheel is thin and you really don't communicate with the suspension and your wheels. It's steering is light, and corners go nice, but you kind of not 'feel' what you want to feel. Therefore, I'd pick the BMW, which has great dynamic suspension and steering (and a thicker wheel). Same goes if you compare Audi A4 or Volkswagen Golf / Passat and BMW 3 series. The BMW is just the real drivers car, and if I were a true hypermiler, I think the Audi would annoy me in the long run. Especially when it's expensively priced.

My dad owns a 2009 3.0l V6 240 hp Audi A5 convertible and to say that it clatters like a tractor is way, way off the mark. The reviewers bash on diesels simply to look good, I'm afraid. This video is payed by BMW. The A6 has a bigger boot and more rear bedroom, it also has the better AWD a system (for all terrain), of course it's not as fun to drive (Audi never is), but you make a big deal about the 1MPG less and try to hide the 0.2 seconds quicker 0-62mph time. And since when does any of these cars sound or feel anything like a tractor?

The A6 Torsen 4wd is so aged compared to xdrive. Xdrives advantage in short: "The DPC differential features clutch packs on both output sides that are actuated by an electric motor. The clutch pack activates a planetary gearset which causes one wheel to be overdriven. A conventional control system will use the brakes to reduce the speed of the faster-moving wheel (which is the one with less traction) and reduce engine power. This leads to increased brake wear and slower than optimal progress. In contrast, the DPC system speeds up the slower moving wheel (the one with the most traction) in order to maintain stability when needed. For example, while turning, the outer wheel is overdriven to provide greater acceleration, using the traction advantage through the dynamic loading of the outboard wheel in cornering. Meanwhile, in an oversteer situation, the inner wheel is overdriven to regain traction balance." + quattro is not a 4wd system, it's just Audis name for 4wd. they use everything from cheap viscodiffs, Haldex, Torsen and so on depending on model.
@SIMcityplayer2002
@SIMcityplayer2002 9 жыл бұрын
BMW XDrive simply sends power to all wheels. Audi Quattro sends power to the wheels which need power in one of the best ways around, at the level of Nissan and Porsche. And the BMW is smaller in the boot and back, everybody else and every other review - plus the spec sheet - says so.

These guys are completely wrong on Audi drive train smoothness. I have owned Mercedes diesels and every brand of luxury gasoline automobiles. The Audi A8 and A6 (I own both) are the smoothest transmissions I have ever experienced. The combination V6 TDI and 8 speed transmissions are absolutely seamless and the engines are refined and NOT in the least cheap sounding. Downshifts are not noticeable and there is absolutely no shuttering. This review was completely unfair to Audi.

Both cars are considered very expensive in Europe. But very capable. In this segment diesel is preferred because of running costs and residuals. Only very successful self-employed people or executives drive these cars, and criminals and less desirable elements, i have to say, sadly. Both cars are very refined and quiet. I drive a BMW 530d GT and are very happy with it, although the car is to big for my taste (I have 3 teenagers in the back). In the city I prefer my 120diesel, its much more frugal and agile. These cars are quieter and more refined and more economical then most US-built petrol cars. However, american drivers, used to wide and straight, perfectly flat roads, still insist on their preference for very thirsty large-displacement petrol engines. They consider 0-60 times and horsepower as being very important and useful topics in conversation...but then, your gas prices are ludicrous...

I'm not familiar with Audi and BMW's marketing in the US. But it seems very very odd, that you'd use such old engines in new cars. In most of Europe Audi doesnt even offer the 3 litre petrol you mentioned anymore, the new 3 litre bi-turbo TDI is just so good, loads of power, huge amounts of torque and twice the range of the petrol version. And it makes a glorious sound, thanks to an active exhaust system. Same goes for BMW, in Europe the 35d engine is over 300 hp aswell. Maybe it's because americans doesnt care about diesels and fuel economy, with your cheap cars and cheap fuel ? But have a look at the euro versions if you get a chance, they're simply much better,

AutoGuide.com Seems you are right about the Audi gas engine, it's still for sale in a variety of places, just not the UK atleast (in the A6 model, it's still for sale in the A7) Apparantly you can't trust in everything you hear on youtube, even if it comes from a car journalist. Still seems odd with the power output of the 35d engine though, if you look at the british or the german BMW site, it's listed at 313 hp, only in the US you get 255 hp :-)

Karsten Pedersen What cheap cars and cheap fuel are you talking about? The US has tougher emissions regulations. Manufactures are forced to use more restrictive emissions controls that detune the engines and increase the cost of owning diesels. That's part of the reason why it's harder to run diesels in the US.

You can buy a dedicated sports car like the new corvette with the Z51 package and still have enough money left over to buy a slightly used 3 series for daily driving. 76k is way to expensive for any single car. Trick would be to probably buy it slightly used, let someone else take the massive depreciation that happens almost immediately when you buy one.

I know people who had diesels and now they want to buy petrol. Diesel is good if you plan to drive a looooot of kilometres monthly, but otherwise, modern petrols have very good fuel efficiency. Especially 4-cylinders. And I'm not sure what you mean by "diesel is smoother". Petrol engines are known to be more smooth than diesels in various aspects. If it has something to do wit lower rpm, than you can buy turbo-petrol that has a lot of torque available at low rpm. Sometimes even lower than diesel (for example 2.0 from BMW).

J Smith sure those are the most important features of a car for me, thats why i own a mazda coz i love its handling. But at this price range ppl demand luxury and well executed details and they become important matters if you're gonna spend 50k or more in a car. At least for many ppl they do.

In the words if you are homosexual,you most likely would buy Audi,as things like tiny little silver stripes on the dash are very impressive and highly valued by them. The rest would choose BMW,as things like handling and driving matters way more.

Makes me wonder how much do you guys get from BMW? :D seems to be a pre-paid review. Too much prejudice. Fan of BMW driving the BMW and a person who isn't fond of Audi is driving an Audi - not a quality review.

Here's THREE! 1.)Urea injection is used on both cars and must be refilled ever 10,000 miles or so and it's expensive as hell. 2.)The engine notes of both cars are terrible, and the Audi particularly has a displeasing rattle. 3.)Their peak torque figures are good, however, diesels have famously horrible power and torque curves. Which is to say that anything past 4000 RPM is dead and you'd better upshift already. Which is no fun.

-Diesel option is more upfront. -Diesel costs $0.50 to $1.00 more where I live. -Diesel engines usually cost more to maintain. -Diesel engines are much more complicated, expensive to fix. -Diesel particulate filters (DPF's) are prone to choking because they do not operate below operating temperatures. -Diesels are slower than their gas equivalents. -Diesel fuel is messier and quality diesel is harder to find than gasoline. -Diesel is less abundant than gasoline. -Diesel... Wait, you said one reason. And yes, I've owned diesels.

TCD DAVE You are american right ? In europe many of those points are void. - Diesels often cost a bit more upfront, but usually the difference is really minor. - Diesel is usually 10 - 20 % cheaper than gas (atleast in the EU countries i've driven in) - Nope, everything here has turbos now, and the only difference are the injectors, but you are in trouble if they break. - Nah - Nah, only if you drive your diesel like an idiot. - Nah, diesels are marginnaly slower only in theory, but who the hell does 0 - 100 flat out dayli ? the torque will make it feel fast in dayli driving. - Nah, never hear of, or noticed any problems - Nah, diesel is for sale at every single fuel station i have ever seen.

Many Americans replying here. I guess things are like that over there. In Europe, a diesel is a perfect vehicle. No road tax, diesel is cheaper, MUCH better mileage, heaps of torque that are essential for city transport. They are a bit more expensive up front but that's about it. Performance difference is not significant at all.

isit me ore does the f10 535d has more hp here in europe? my cousen own one he has custum remaped the ecu deleted the dpf and egr systems the engine produces 430hp know 0to100km takes 4.5 second its a monster but not only that a V8 can suck it nothing compares to the 535d its relaxed torq at every rev when the engine is relaxed you are at the same level so for people who drive aallot on the road go for a diesel!!!

Are US A6's lower spec than those in the UK. My 2013 A6 3.0 TDI gets on average 48mpg. Just did a long run and got 51mpg! Also it's silent with no rattles or rumbles in the cabin. Very strange.

1. Can't stand that guys lisp 2. If you can afford these cars the "savings" on fuel won't be your first concern 3. The diesel market in North America is still in its infancy stages and many won't want to give up the performance and engine refinement of a gasoline powered car. Overall a pretty irelavent review (Besides the fact the A6 and 5 series agree in the same class) and mediocre hosts. 5/10.

Do you guys realize diesel are actually quieter in cruise speed such as high way. Ideal speed noise ? If you are a nerd. Seriously, in real world, not your garage, as long as your window down or window close with some music. You can't hear it. But the real noise that you can't avoid is high speed noise.

Not so reliable as they used to be. These new diesels are hi-tech engines with a huge pressure and a lot of parts that can be damaged. Personally I would rather take a petrol. The only advantage of diesel is fuel economy, nothing else.

Diesel is more reliable, has better MPGS numbers, emotes less CO2 and other dangerous gases, is better and smoother on long journeys, has more torque and has better resale values (percentage and actual money). And has a slight bit more noise.
@Fermion911
@Fermion911 9 жыл бұрын
SIMcityplayer2002 Nope. I have to do a few corrections to your post. Diesel is NOT more reliable. It used to be at the times of non turbo diesels. Not today hi-tech diesels that use a ton of electronics and incredible pressures. Diesel has better MPGS and produces less CO2 - that's correct. But not less other dangerous gases! Diesel produces more carcinogenes than petrol. A lot of NOx and other sh*t. Diesel is not smoother. It has just a little more torque if compared to modern turbo-petrols. On the other hand, from the same displacement, the diesel has always less power. For example, 2-litre engines from Opel (top versions): Petrol 2.0 - 247 hp / 400Nm torque Diesel 2.0 - 195 hp / 400Nm torque Moreover, the max torque in turbo-petrol engines is available in much wider spectre of rpm, than in diesel eingines. In some tubro-petrol engines you get max torque from 1500 to 4500 rpm or more. In diesel it is usually from 1500 to 2500 rpm, or so. Better resale values for diesels, that's also correct. However, it usually has also a more expensive service. A slight bit more noise for diesel and also the sound is not very nice (+ it smells bad). I don't mind the noise of engine, if the sound is nice. Let's say petrol V6 or V8.
