Back in 1994 I bought a used 83' 320i. It was my first car and I absolutely loved it. Wasn't too powerful but manual transmission and RWD made it a joy to drive. Every paycheck that I earned in high school went towards paying back my parents and we kept it until 2004 when it was T-Boned in the Walmart parking lot with my mom behind the wheel (not her fault). It was a low speed accident but it totaled the car. By that point it had around 150K on the odometer but still would have had more life left in it.

That’s true everywhere in the U.S.. I think the problem is that most people suck at driving, but when your vehicle is so big it barely fits in the damn lane, in the parking lot, in its parking space, every error is magnified for other drivers. That’s not helped by the arrogant, self-centered, and incorrect belief that your vehicle’s size will somehow protect you from your own mistakes so you don’t need to be careful or respectful of others.

Do we notice it more because it stands out more or because of the preconceived notions we have involving BMW drivers? Also, sidebar, speaking as someone whose parents own a 3-Series, I will say that your commentary on their attitude is bang on. Obnoxiously overprotective. Also also, for anyone who has never driven a 3-Series, they aren't necessarily being road douches intentionally: the turn signals and accelerator pedals are really weird and make it easy to be an ass when you aren't trying to be. The accelerator works like a switch (and I don't just mean it's touchy) making it easy to accidentally accelerate way more than you were expecting, and the turn signals are designed in a way that makes it easy to activate the "flash-to-pass" when you're trying to use the normal turn signal.

They were and still are used as company cars or for sales reps, as police vehicles sometimes and I kid you not, lots of these drive around as station wagons here and belong to families. People put skiers or bicycles on the roof and travel with them. They are normal, reliable cars here like a Toyota Camry in the US or a Dodge Charger or a Crown Vic or sth. The cars that do still perpetuate the jerk driver image are the 5 series and up but also more and more Audis now ...

It’s because that’s the market BMW has made for its self here, that’s how it tends to work when importing. You don’t make a ton of cash selling budget cars so selling each car as loaded as possible inflated the profit margin. The Japanese pulled something similar off after voluntarily capping their importation numbers, they had to make more $$$ per car and started pushing up market.

I think it matters far more on the age of the driver. When I see most people my age driving nicer cars, they're far more showy and aggressive. The older demographics tend to drive like sane, normal people. Although I drive almost exclusively luxury, I try my absolute best to follow common sense and road laws to a T, because everyone else is happier that way. I make it a point to give large trucks, like yours, ample space, because physics is not your side, and I've seen what those things can do to tiny passenger cars.
@BoringIntrovert19826 жыл бұрын
Darren Persad For the most part you're right. It also depends on the location. For example there's more aggression exhibited towards semi drivers in larger population areas vs. rural areas. Although not a sign of aggression, rather ignorance is when people ride along side a semi for several miles. They fail to understand that when a tire blows it's A: Going to sound like a cannon shot. B: Throw heavy chunks of the tire and other debris in all directions. C: May result in loss of control especially if it's a steer tire.

The modern Diesels are better anyway, can’t get a straight 6 anymore unless you go 340i - more torque in a diesel so they’re actually faster than all the normal petrol models

One of my junior high(7th-8th grade) football coaches had the previous model base 3 series, even back then I could feel the aura coming off the guy. A man who really wanted to coach high school football(its a big deal in Texas) but ended up at a junior high. His ambitions didnt match his talent or experience, and his paycheck didnt match the sticker price of anything more than the entry model. He cared for that car like it was a child though it was by far the nicest vehicle any teacher/coach owned at my school. He wasnt the best coach I ever had, yet I could tell he was trying his best, working his way up the ladder. I hope by now he has climbed high enough for that 5 Series or even an M car.

I go to Art Center College of Design (Car design school where many BMW designers come from ✋🏼🤫🔫) that aside.... I have an instructor that has a third party research company. His consultancy found: 1. Mercedes owners generally have the most wealth and money 2. Audi owners are generally the most educated 3. 4. BMW owners are in the most debt Ohhh.... and the super wealthy as in billionaires....they don’t take their kids to schools in Cadillac Escalades....they all prefer GMC Yukons 🤫

I think it's because bmws attract a younger demographic than a mercedes or an audi (kinda), thus they make less money and have to go into more debt.
@Norbert.Gardonyi6 жыл бұрын
And what about the fact the bmws are the most expensive cars to keep over a 10 year period? And also that audi and mercedes are, too, in the top 10 most expensive cars to maintain over that 10 year period? 🤔

My friends neighbor owns a 325i and he boasts about it going 180. I highly doubt your beemer does 180. He also said it had a v8, which it doesn’t. And he’s one of the most inconsiderate drivers I’ve ever driven with. It’s in the shop for more time than it’s out of it, and people always “unintentionally” run into it with their cars after parties. Hmm

I think it's funny to see Mr Regular's opinion of BMW softening with each review. E46 330 Ci - He hated the car. (And I offered him my ZHP with the right transmission as a chance to alter his perspective) E90 335i - He started to like BMW, minus the wonky turn signal (why did BMW change that anyway? Old was perfect) F30 320i - He liked it even more than the E90. Mr. Regular, you can still review my 330 ZHP whenever you want. Of the three just mentioned, it's by far the best overall driving experience.
