Learn how to perform a transmission service on these late model GM vehicles. This video includes a drain and fill procedure as well as checking the fluid level at the correct temperature range. These transmissions do not have a dipstick and so the procedure for checking the fluid level will be different compared to vehicles that do have a dipstick.

THE 11MM OVERFILL BOLT IS EASILY REACHABLE WHEN YOU: 1. REMOVE THE TIRE 2. USE A 6 INCH EXTENSION 3 USE A 1/4 INCH RATCHET ( I USED A MAGNET ON MY EXTENSION TO REMOVE / REPLACE THE BOLT ) // THERES ENOUGH SPACE TO ACCESS IT WITHOUT CRAWLING UNDER THE CAR & BURNING YOUR HAND. ALSO TO PREVENT THE BOLT FROM FALLING INTO THE VERY LITTLE FLUID COLLECTED, I USE A MAGNET ATTACHED TO EXTENSION - NOT NECESSARY THE FLUID COOLS QUICKLY // NOTE:

Sorry to keep bothering you. I can't reach 185f no matter how hard I tried. I tried the method you suggested : foot on brake & acellerator , ran thru gears slowly . I also drove 94 miles driving 65 -75 mph when i arrived home after WAITING about 15 min , i removed the drain bolt, yes drain bolt UNDERNEATH the car & captured a small amount of fluid ( IT WAS HOT ON MY HAND BUT NOT INTOLARABLE) & measured the temp. with my multimeter temp. probe . the temp. was 135f . I AGAIN TRIED THE BRAKE , ACELLERATOR METHOD TEDIOUSLY & WAS ONLY ABLE TO REACH 151F .FINALLY, I DECIDED TO PUT THE AMOUNT YOU DRAINED FROM YOUR CAR 4.2-4.3 QTS.

When check the level could you just stop the car once it started dripping, let it cool and then put the bolt back in?
@moosemobileautorepair
@moosemobileautorepair 4 ай бұрын
No, the engine has to stay running in order to check the level properly. You must reinstall the bolt during the procedure, otherwise the level will be inaccurate.
@devon896
@devon896 4 ай бұрын
It states in the service manual if you turn the engine off when the check bolt is undone the fluid will just dump out. The engine needs to be on the entire time.

greetings moose mobile auto repair! Where did you buy that measuring cup for the transmission fluid? Also what scanner did you buy to measure operating temperature? I have a obd2 scanner yet it connects to my phone. The brand is bluedriver.

When you get the fluid dripping , meaning it's 'full , could you just shut if off and cool so you can tigten the bolt?
@moosemobileautorepair
@moosemobileautorepair 22 күн бұрын
Vehicle must be running while closing the check bolt/plug. It cannot be turned off otherwise the level won't be correct.

Great job Wouldn’t whatever amount of fluid you drained be exactly the amount that has to go back in? Seems like alot more drained out when checking the level
@moosemobileautorepair
@moosemobileautorepair 4 ай бұрын
There is always going to be some amount to drain out when checking the level. It's advised to fill the transmission a little bit more so you can check the level properly. The fluid expands when it's hot so the amount of fluid you drain out won't always be the amount to put back in depending if you drained the fluid when it was hot or cold. The temperatures between the new and old fluids won't be the same hence the level will be a little different. Now, in some cases you can get away with it by draining and measuring and putting the same amount of fluid back in. However, it's still advised to check the level in the end just to be sure.

how many miles is too much for an oil change?
@moosemobileautorepair
@moosemobileautorepair 3 ай бұрын
Anything over 5000 Miles for an oil change is too much. Transmission service should be done at a minimum every 45000 Miles (72000 Kilometers) according to the GM scheduled maintenance for severe driving conditions. My recommendations for transmission service on this vehicle around 30 k to 40 k Miles (48000 to 64000 Kilometers).

I have a 2012 Sonic. Is there no transmission filter on this model?
@moosemobileautorepair
@moosemobileautorepair Жыл бұрын
There is a filter on all of these models, however the transmission pan and filter is mounted vertically and the transmission would have to come out in order to change it if I'm not mistaken.

Have you looked into getting some of those Kevlar/Nomex forearm sleeves for working on “inconvenient” designs like this?

You can't access the filter without tearing apart the transmission.

@@moosemobileautorepair okay thanks bro and switch through all gears before hand?
@moosemobileautorepair
@moosemobileautorepair 7 ай бұрын
Sure. Warmed up and go through all the gears then check the level. For every time if you need to top up the fluid you will need to go through the gears again before checking the level.

Hi just out of curiosity, how long did it take to get the transmission fluid temperature from cold to the hot check temperature in minutes.? When refilling. ( total time ) Thanks
@moosemobileautorepair
@moosemobileautorepair 11 ай бұрын
I can't give the exact time because I was filming the video that day, but you can get the vehicle to operating temperature in around 5 to 10 minutes just by driving it normally and coming back to lift the vehicle up and service the transmission. The service can be done in about an hour or less it just all depends on your speed.

@@moosemobileautorepair Hi , I asked because I have a 6T45 and have done 40 mins of highway driving to get it to the hot check temperature and still can't reach it. When I get home and let it idle in park the temperature actually drops. The temperature is checked via a obd2 dongle
@moosemobileautorepair
@moosemobileautorepair 11 ай бұрын
40 minutes of highway driving should be more than enough to get it to operating temperature. I would double check to make sure that you are monitoring the correct transmission temperature on the scan tool. Also, if you idle in park the transmission temperature will start dropping so you would have to be quick to check the fluid level then. You can do what I did in the video to warm it up by placing it in gear while on the brake and holding the accelerator all the way down (use caution of course and chock the rear wheels for safety). Alternatively, if the process is giving you a hard time you can just drain what comes out and put the same back in. I believe it takes roughly 4.25 liters approx. If I'm not mistaken.

@@moosemobileautorepair Thanks for your advice, I do have a transmission temperature PiD ( GM method 2 ) on scanning device, next time I will use your method, 40 mins of highway driving only reaches 160 F. My vehicle has a transmission cooler fitted from the factory, Maybe that's got something to do with it.

It's not a bad procedure it's just dangerous. In the UK Vauxhall (Previously owned by GM) refuse to do auto transmission fluid change because of it.
