If I was in cruiser mode I would buy a Guzzi. They sound great and go really well. I have friends with them and have viewed their tail lights regularly at all sorts of speeds. Great bikes.

Commute on mine in melbourne and will nip down to the shops on it instead of my scooter. Feels like a light weight toy once you are used to them. My roadking was pretty good too but not on this level.

A shame they never bothered using this engine on any other of their models. Not a fan of the size, mass and front end rake on this Beast. Something like a Centauro, Breva or Grisso could have been a good chassis for this massive V twin.

I'd like to hear about the HEAT coming off the cylinders cooking you in the hot summer months and the shaft drive.

It's not too bad. These run cooler than Harley's with the jugs out in the breeze. Even if you are in gridlock and you get rolling again, if hot they will cool right down once the bike is cutting thru wind again.

Great review. Any chance to have a review of a California III or your opinion if you know this bike ?
@MikesMachines
@MikesMachines 6 жыл бұрын
I haven't ridden the Cali III but all Tonti framed Guzzis ride in a similar manner from my experience. Steering is old school with some effort required to change direction. They are usually stable at speed if the suspension is up to scratch and the bike is well looked after. There's a lot of the earlier Le Mans in the Cali III and the earlier Tonti based California's and this heritage shines through in the corners unless you have a ton of luggage on board.

How is the heat on the legs from the cylinders? Does this bike have any cooling issues in hot weather and slow traffic? What kind of range and mpg does it get? Does it come with hard bags? How much does the bike cost with bags? Does it have a front fairing from the factory and a larger seat if you wanted to take a trip with the wife? Would it be a bad bike for a longer trip? People do it on Harleys.
@MikesMachines
@MikesMachines 6 жыл бұрын
Heat is not a problem on Guzzi's as a rule. I've owned many over the years and never had an issue. In slow traffic the heat rises up and away from you generally and is no worse than other bikes I've owned. The 1400 is also fitted with a large oil cooler which should help on hot days too. Older Guzzi's would ping on stinking hot days out here in Australia but modern fuel injection has eliminated that problem for good. Fuel consumption is around 40mpg (US) I believe. I didn't test it on the day, I didn't have the time. This would make the range of the bike to be around 216 miles with the 5.4 gal (US) tank. There are factory fairings and bags available for the 1400. You can also opt for the touring model which comes with these fitted and a better pillion seat. The Cali is a good option for a long distance tourer. It's comfortable, it handles well, has gobs of torque and the best brakes on any cruiser I've ridden.

Thank you very much. That was informative. A touring version might give my Goldwing a bit of a run for a good all round bike for some trips. I always liked Motto Guzzi. Its like a BMW but sexier.

In my country (sorry for "English") there is no Cruiser tradition, even if you can see some of that around, but we see the bike differently. Sure, I understand why in the US there is the passion for this bikes (with that type of roads and spaces) but speaking of my personal taste, I don't like these bikes. Said that, I have to admit it: the California it's wonderful. 👍

@jimdekorne3724
@jimdekorne3724 4 жыл бұрын
Philip, where do i start. The Eldorado 1400 is one of the most enjoyable bikes I have owned. Just like Mike describes it, except the Eldorado has 16" wheels compared to the customs 17" front tire 16" rear. So slow maneuvers are better I think, other reviews I've read say the same thing that the Eldorado is better at slow speed handling than the other 1400 variants. I've been riding since 1972 , BMW's for about thirty years, build quality is every bit as good as my beemers. I have 30,000 miles on it so far no problems.
