Really helpful video, thanks. When removing the nut with the rattle gun, using an old belt, is it enough just using the engines compression, or did you have to lock the crank in place, it seems like the crank was not locked. Secondly and less importantly, I don't have that motor, I have a couple of 900s, but still out of curiosity I can't help wondering why you put that cam in when you said you didn't really like it, is it just one you had spare, and didn't want to have to buy one that you really do like, or is there not a cam for that motor that you prefer?

I love moto guzzi’s. I have had four of them starting in 1979 all the way through till 2021. SP 1000, V 11 sport, (the most uncomfortable motorcycle in the entire history of the universe) a v50ll, The machine that had electronic ignition that did not start to advance the timing until the RPMs reached 2000 RPM. That’s why they went back to points the next year on this model.. and finally, my Norge 1200 GT. I love them, they have a soul that no Japanese motorcycle I ever owned has or ever will have. they sure ain’t perfect like Japanese motorcycles can be. They are not the fastest, they are even not the easiest to sell when you wanna move them. A lot of people never even heard of them. But I love them. It feels like an accomplishment when you make it on a 500 mile trip and back without any issues. That’s nothing for a Japanese motorcycle, but for something like a moto guzzi, it’s in the backof your mind.. three of my machines had oil sending unit failures, three of them. That is quite an attention getter when your oil light comes on at 70 miles an hour when you’re 150 miles from home by yourself at night. That oil light glows brighter in the dark. So I pull over, I have oil, so I pull the valve cover and start the bike. Oil starts flying everywhere so I know it’s the oil sending unit and not the oil pump.. that happened on three different bikes. Moto guzzi needs to get a different supplier for their relays. I’ve had relay failures on my V 11 sport and on my Norge, especially the start relay. The start relay has a load of 8 A on it as soon as you turn the key on. That’s even before you hit the start button… my SP 1000, my V 11 sport, and my Norge required a fresh new battery every two years. Trying to get three years out of a battery caused non-start issues. They need a strong new battery with lots of cold cranking amps… There was a story on the Internet about oil pump failures on the 2007, Norge 1200 GT, the ones made in November and December of that year. The story on the Internet said there was a batch of oil pumps that fail that were made in that month and a half. I called every moto guzzi dealer within 500 miles over a couple days. None of them ever heard of an oil pump failure. I could not ride that bike without thinking about that. I ended up buying an oil pump and putting it in. I took both oil pumps apart, and they looked and measured the same.. I actually ran into the guy that had the oil pump failure at a moto guzzi gathering. To tell you the truth, I think that guy started his bike on the side stand and let it idle for a long time which resulted in problems after talking to the guy. He had a leaky dipstick tube. So I think he let his bike idle when it was low on oil due to an oil dipstick tube leak.. and that’s a shame, because I owned that bike for 14 years, and over the last five years, I did not ride it much, because I just didn’t trust the oil pump. So you have to learn to take stories you learn on the Internet with a grain of salt. none of my moto guzzi‘s ever stuck me anywhere in 190,000 combined miles from 1979 to 2021. They are as reliable as a sledgehammer.. I wish I had a video camera of all the bikes I’ve had including the for moto guzzi. I have three videos on KZbin of a ride. I took on my Norge right after I got my very first GoPro camera from my kids for Christmas. The title of that ride on my Norge is moto guzzi Norge to East Brady, parts, one, part two, part three. I was new to KZbin. When I posted that years after I made the video.. But in that video, you can hear just how relaxed the motor sounds, and how it torques out of corners without constantly shifting. They are a riders motorcycle… I rode, raced motorcycles for eight years, winning six championships, two time national champion. when I retired from racing after my first and only very serious engine seizure at around 140 miles an hour on my Yamaha TZ 250. I woke up two days later in the hospital in plaster. That’s the first time I ever got hurt, and my wife thought I was dead. so I retired from racing and I bought my first moto guzzi.. because I appreciate the solid, feel and handling and excellent brakes. And the widely spaced transmission, ratios, and the riding position.. I test drove a breva 750 In the early 2000s when they first became available. I ended up buying the Norge instead, but I thought the 750 was a pretty perfect package. It had enough power, it had enough breaking power, it was comfortable, flickable, but I thought the Norge was the second best looking motorcycle I had ever seen. I had a fire engine, red one, as you can see in my KZbin video of that machine.. there used to be for moto guzzi dealers within two hours of my home here in Western Pennsylvania, now there are zero dealers left, that I know of. There was one in Franklin, Pennsylvania, one in Steubenville, Ohio, one in Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, And one near Cadiz, Ohio, which is the dealer that I dealt with on the very few occasions I needed parts like valve cover gaskets, and a spare clutch cable. I really never needed to buy any parts for any of my bikes, except for sending units and relays. I bought the OEM sending units, but I did not buy OEM relays because they didn’t have the capacity. I ended up buying Chinese relays and replaced the 10 amp relays with the Chinese 30 amp relays. They only cost three dollars each… not $47 for the OEM relays.. The one negative thing about owning a moto guzzi is, when you go to sell it, you have to find someone that already has a moto guzzi. Because someone that has never had one, probably never even heard of them. It is tough to sell a used one. Especially now that all four dealers that used to be within two hours of my home, they’re all gone now. .. The moto guzzi distributor needs to learn the big sales lesson that is known to all sales departments that sell anything . that lesson is- unseen is unsold .. The moto guzzi management needed to stop, squeezing the dealers to buy more product or lose their franchise. I would love to see the new water cooled moto guzzi’s. But there aren’t any dealers near me anywhere.

This bike is just another offering in the latest round of 'playthings'. Mudguards, inadequate, stupid high level silencers, no room for a passenger, level of engine performance or fuel efficiency no better than a Velocette Venom of fifty plus years ago, the list just goes on and on...

Question for you Brad: Since I will be changing the engine oil when I do the valve adjustment, should I drain the oil before the adjustment or after, considering that the engine will be turned over many times in the process using a crank turning tool? Many thanks for your expertise. Mike C., USA
@roonstar9
@roonstar9 Ай бұрын
I'm doing clearances at the moment, was watching this and saw your comment. Oil has been drained on my bike. There's still enough residual oil everywhere. You're not turning the engine at 3000rpm and you're not going to be pumping oil around with your turns so I don't think it matters too much. I'm no expert though, just one opinion.

This might sound nuts, but I recently found a old linkage driven pantograph engraver from 1915 that works like this one for all intents and purposes. I was wondering if its possible to make a coin minting die using this on SOFT iron that is going to be hardened after the engraving. I was thinking about using the stylus on a larger carving and "draw" the depth of the image onto a minting die. What do you think? Dillusional or just under hairbrained?
@MikesMachines
@MikesMachines 2 ай бұрын
It might possible depending on the hardness of the material. However I suspect that you will need to make multiple passes to get the depth required. This means that you really need a template to get a good result.
@DobleWhiteAndStabley
@DobleWhiteAndStabley 2 ай бұрын
That sounds promising. I don't mind making several passes. Even if it takes me a while day to make the dies, the dies will be capable of making thousands of coins before they wear out. Well worth the time.

I notice you don't use a torque wrench, is this because there is no torque specified? Years ago I had a 1200 Laverda and could never find out from anywhere any torque specifications, IT seem the Italians don't bother as long as it's tight.

Hi Mike, Hoping you can help. my TNT 1130 is new to me. Bought it with seven thousand miles. On the first ride within four miles it died and would not restart. I would like to know where to start. The battery is good and I have ridden the bike up and down my road many times it always started and didn't give me any trouble. Help John
@MikesMachines
@MikesMachines 3 ай бұрын
Hi John, It would be better to post your question in the Benelli forum for expert advice. www.benelliforum.com However some things to check... Is the fuel pump running when you turn on the ignition? Does the dash light up, if not check the 30amp fuse on the starter solenoid. If ok but just the starter motor doesn't turn over it could be the starter solenoid or clutch lever micro switch. Also check the fuses under the seat.

This is the most complicated way to take out the airfilter. Just remove one carburettor, and remove the 2 bolt in the end cower, and slide it sideways. One of the raskest job on those bikes, no need to take either tank or batteri out.

When you install the bolts again, remember to grease them a little, instead of just squizing them. It will prolong the lifespan of the threads.

Good update Mike, always interesting. I'm running the Roadriders on my 1986 Le Mans, Avon being one of the few companies that still supply a 120/80 16" tyre required for the front, which is of universal fitment as you mentioned below. I am very happy with them so far, the bike tracks and steers really well.

never ceases to amaze me how complex it is to replace an air-filter on most motorbikes , I'm not totally mechanically inclined but usually happy to take on easier maintenance jobs so not a biggy to remove fuel tank , battery and what have you to get to the part that needs replacement -- but to me it seems like accessibility to all filters is mostly an afterthought with most bike vendors. Goof for dealerships not so good for the wallet.

Really a shame about the Breva, I hope your wife goes for another Moto Guzzi. Regarding the Avon Roadrider 2's I can vouch that they are really competent in the wet having experienced some extreme cloudburst here, I'm replacing them this time with Bridgestones which I've heard good things about but only because the Avons aren't immediately available in the Czech Republic in the area where I live.. hope I'm not disappointed. Good to see your videos again Mike.
