she sings like an old woman whose been singing jazz her whole life, her face, body language, phrasing ...... the right singer for Old Folks. wonderful...and this is an example where her Catalan accent actually makes the song better, the vowel sounds....i cant understand half the words, but its pure music.

Unbelievable. This girl was 12 years old at the recording time. She's really great. Her voice gives me associations of Billie Holiday, or Silje Nergaard. Great, great. Also Dick Oatts is fantastic. And all the other young musicians, of course. Congratulations, Mr. Chamorro!

A wee girl with a great heart, Abril (13 yo?) surrounded by jazz greats (Dick, Joan) and role models (Esteve, Marc), sings this incredible rendition of an almost-forgotten warrier of another time, another continent. She does it unbelievably well, sensitively, ?unconciously? A moment to remember!
@lechtrzeciak60844 жыл бұрын
It speaks clearly that it's THE DRUMMER singing - her feeling of timing, shown here, is incredible. It is actually quite different experience that with most SAJB songs I prefer, which are mostly with latin pulse or at least some latin spirit to it. But it is this one that often makes me wanting to get up, pick up an instrument and play along.

Beautiful, Abril. Thank you. - Lyrics: Everyone knows him as "Old Folks" Like the seasons he comes and he'll go Just as free as a bird and as good as his word That's why everybody loves him so Always leaving his spoon in his coffee Tucks his napkin up under his chin And his own corn cob pipe is so mellow, hits right But you needn't be ashamed of him In the evenings after supper What stories he tells How he held his speech at Gettysburg for Lincoln that day You know I know that one so well One thing we don't know about "Old Folks" Did he fight for the blue or the gray? But he's so democratic and so diplomatic We always let him have his way In the evenings after supper What stories he tells How he held his speech at Gettysburg for Lincoln that day Yes, I know that one so well Some day there will be no more "Old Folks" What a lonely old world this will be Children's voices at play will be still fonding The day they take "Old Folks" away Songwriters: Dedette Lee Hill / Willard Robison
@branscombeR4 жыл бұрын
D22 Williams.22: Thanks for posting this. It seems there is more than one version of the lyrics, perhaps not surprising, considering its age - this one is quite different to the one Abril sings, but has some interesting additional verses: OLD FOLKS (Willard Robison (m) Dedette Lee Hill (l) ) as recorded by Larry Clinton & his Orchestra (vocal - Bea Wain) September 1st 1938 Hear the original at: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d33GmqVul8qMebc Everyone knows him as "Old Folks", Like the seasons he'll come and he'll go. Just as free as a bird And as good as his word, That's why everybody loves him so! Always leavin' his spoon in the coffee, Puts his napkin up under his chin, And that yellow cob pipe, It's so mellow it's ripe, But you needn't be ashamed of him! In the evenin', after supper, What stories he would tell. How he held the speech at Gettysburg for Lincoln that day; Oh, I know that one so well! Don't quite understand the bad old folk, Did he fight for the blue or the grey? For he's so diplomatic And so democratic, We always let him have his way! We always know where to find "Old Folks", When there's some little chore he can do. At the old livery stable, Whenever he's able, Pittin' the shoes with lord knows who! Then he meets the late train at the station, Sits and wivvels when it's overdue. While they're sortin' the mail, Every night without fail He's sneakin' a little nip or two! Every Friday he'll go fishin', Way down on Boaters' Lake. But he only hooks a perch or two, a whale got away, So then we warm up the steak! Oh, someday there'll be no more "Old Folks", What a lonely old town this will be. Children's voices at play Will be still for a day, The day that they take "Old Folks" away! In this recording there's a rich, spell-binding, perhaps even unsettling quality to Abril's voice which I've not heard again in any other of her SAJB performances [SEE Additional note below for an update on this], nor in her later blues band videos. An online comment from a family friend reports that 'she stunned everyone' when they heard her sing 'Old Folks'... it seems no-one knew she was capable of what he describes as this 'amazing' voice. Leaving aside the challenge of the lyrics, which it's hard to believe she fully understood at her age, living as she does in Barcelona, so far away in time and geography and politics from the events remembered by perhaps one of the last remaining civil war veterans who witnessed them, the sensitive musical support offered to Abril by Dick Oatts, Marc Martin, Josep Traver, Esteve Pi and Joan Chamorro throughout is, I think, a text-book example of why mixing seasoned professionals with young performers, a pillar of Joan's 'method', is such a great way of teaching excellence by experiencing it alongside those who can demonstrate it live, on stage. Judging by her KZbin output since graduating from the SAJB, Abril had some fun learning to play blues guitar and performing alongside her brother, but most recently (2020) she has teamed up with another Chamorro protegee, Miranda Fernández and four other talented women in a project called 'Las Noray' kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWitq6h6r82Jaas ... her drumming for this group is absolutely spot on, technically ... it's also VERY adventurous! ADDITIONAL: Within an hour of posting this, it was awarded one of Joan's coveted 'Chamorro Hearts' but it looks like you lose them if you edit at all ... which is of course understandable! D22Williams.22 kindly posted the lyrics, elsewhere on this thread, which are pretty close to what Abril sings here, as far as I can tell, but I discovered there's at least one other version online, which has interesting extra verses: lyricsplayground.com/alpha/songs/o/oldfolks.html ... ALSO: I have since found a 2015 recording of Abril singing lead on 'Is You Is, Or Is You Ain't My Baby?' in which she reprises some of the qualities debuted here, when she's a bit older: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o2q4lXinf7B4naM ... R (Australia)

Branscombe - Thanks for the thoughtful comments and all the links. I will try to catch up with Abril's career. Re 'Chamorro Hearts', it has happened to me too, in another video. I noticed someone missing in the credits, pointed it out, and within the hour it had been fixed and I had that recognition. Then I edited to say no one was missing anymore and lost it. Oh, well. In the future, I shall add anything else by replying to myself instead of editing.
