What did Carl Jung think? Why is it important, personally, socially and politically? What did he see as an alternative to nihilism and totalitarianism? How did he understand meaning? How was he influenced by Nietzsche? What is the collective unconscious? How did he conceive of the relationship between dreams and fantasies and the progression of history?

At around 13:40 the professor mentions how, in Faust, Goethe presented the Devil's (Evil's) hypothesis about life: that it is so unbearably cruel and random that it is best if it had never existed at all. Nietzsche said the exact same thing. In his "Birth of Tragedy" he talks about the tale of King Midas who hunted a wise demon. When he finally captured him he wouldn't let him go unless the demon answered his question. Kind Midas's question to the demon who knew all was "what is best for (a) man to do? What should man pursue?". The demon laughed "Fullish mortal king. Why do you want to know that which you are not meant to know?". The king insisted so the demon finally answered. "The best thing for man is to never have existed at all. The second best thing, if he does exist, is to die as soon as possible". I sense the quasi-divine demon makes the same point as the Devil in Faust

Metaphorically, to seek ego death and enter liberation or full realisation would be the highest possible arc. Although to state it as such makes it a concept which defeats the point of a metaphor. Midas is trying to find a concept that will grant him some release but can only look for the answer within the confines of is own unenlightened consciousness. The Demon’s answer is, “Give up your self-concept. end the idealisation of the self. The quest is the problem.” You cannot have an answer when arriving at this point. Sudden spontaneous realisation and go laughing into eternity maybe but one pointed consciousness. No.

Honestly, The envy I have for those that were lucky enough to have studied under Dr Peterson, His methods are concise, he also as he has stated many times when he talks he is thinking out loud and seeing if what he says is received and valid and it pretty much always is, He is also a hell of a character and he made what I can tell you from proffessors I have studied under he makes it like an interactive and engaging event, its so deep and informative and he is a man who has a profound kindness and also a great sense of humour, honestly I rolled it back a few times there when he said "Thats Carl Yung" he was so chuffed with that he loved it and it was well received and it made me laugh, truly a man that knows his orientation in the world and a man who uses his abilities to empower through knowledge and in a way I actually enjoy I binge and soak up this stuff like a sponge. just fantastic, he is an academic treasure aand I hope he comes full circle and continues to just enlighten us with his brilliant mind. Thank you Dr Peterson, truly

Professor Peterson, around 28:00 you say that Jung's vision of Europe swimming in blood came to him in the late 1930's, but according to Sonu Shamdasani's introduction to the Red Book, it came to him twice in 1913, which strengthens your earlier point about Jung's prophetic mind.

Dr. Peterson, I was intrigued and impressed by your interview with Sam Harris on his podcast. I decided to check out your work online. Of course my previous scholarly work on C.G. Jung led me to this lecture from your PSY230 course. As I watched and listened, I was intrigued by your lecture. I feel privileged to get to know how you think, and in such an intimate," persona" way that You Tube lectures often allow. I was happy to get the "feel" of you as a person and an assessment of how you construct your intellectual arguments. And then then I got to the 19:01 mark and was surprised to see you mention my name with respect to the works on Jung I wrote in the mid-1990s. And then you made me sad. Without ever having met me, without ever having contacted me, without accurately critically evaluating the evidence I put forth to back up my arguments, you described me to your students as a "jealous" and "crooked guy," and inaccurately claimed I deliberately used "Nazi" imagery in my books to malign Jung. first, there is no "Nazi" symbols or imagery on the covers of either of my books on Jung. Second, all illustrations in both books were from the pre-Nazi era of German history. Check the dates in my books -- all pre-1920. In both of my books (of 1994 and 1997), I made it clear that Jung was not a Nazi but drew water from the common well of German culture/counterculture and its racialist and Aryan mystical intellectual currents as the National Socialists did (who did not exist when Jung was drawing upon these symbols and literatures). Subsequent historical works by Wouter Hanegraaff and especially Carrie Dohe in her 2016 book "Jung's Wandering Archetype" have arrived at similar conclusions. My books, particularly my second one (which was written for the general public, not academics) sometimes use blunt language to make my arguments. My intention back then, some two decades ago, was to fill a gap in the historical literature on him which portrayed him as a perennialist mystic who somehow existed outside history, especially the Germanophone cultural context of the age in which he forged his ideas. Other than a chapter by Henri Ellenberger and a book by Peter Homans, in 1992 there was no significant intellectual history of Jung or critique of his ideas. The language I deliberately chose was designed to burst the overwhelming idealizing transference so many Jungians and Jungian analysts had to his media-manufactured imago. I did not harm Jung. He died in 1962. I did not kill JFK either. He died the following year. I understand, of course, that you are not a historian but, like me, a clinical psychologist. However, historical context does matter. Jung was not an ahistorical being. Teaching his ideas and his life as if he somehow existed outside of history does your students, and the viewers of this video, a disservice. So, alas, I am sad. I must say, watching this. I am profoundly disappointed in your unfair judgments of my character. I wish you had made the attempt to contact me and engage in a dialogue with me, even if only by email. Character is important. Civility is important. Honest intellectual engagement is important. We are all entitled to our opinions about the statements or writings of others, but civil discourse in academia usually does not include charges that another scholar is "crooked" or "jealous" because just you have an intellectual disagreement with him. Too bad. We could have had much to talk about. From what I can tell, on a few intellectual issues, there are points of agreement between the two of us. With maximum respect, Richard Noll

Dr Peterson missed something in his commentary. At 1:11:22 dust is scattered on the king's head. It's not enough for the Hero only to pay attention and be conscious (the Sun), one must also be "earthy": connected to the earth and real life, dwell among the people ("groundlings"), and be aware of the hard conditions of life (ordinary hardship and sufferings).

I sent a copy of the first version of yesterday's comment in an email to Dr. Peterson, and he responded immediately. We had a brief exchange of emails. In them he apologized, and I accept his apology. I did not request or demand any sort of retraction, but I did express my sorry and acknowledgment of hurt feelings. His response was gracious. On his own he offered to revise his comments about my character (specifically, that I am a "crooked guy") and the specific false factual claim he made -- that my two Jung books from the 1990s deliberately contained "Nazi" imagery, including on the cover of one of the books, a false memory which he then relied upon to make the assumption that I did this deliberately for my own persona gain and to deliberately malign Jung. All illustrations were from pre-1920, thus pre-Nazi, German cultural sources. The false fact begat a false claim about my motives and character, which served to bolster his initial statement about my "crooked" character. The arguments I made in my books, the evidence I offered in support of the arguments, and a factual critique of the evidence of my main claims are not offered by Dr. Jordan in this video. We all sometimes say boneheaded things about others whose work we have read but whom we have never met in the heat of academic arguments. We're all human, after all. The problem is that the young students in the room that day were most likely prejudiced against Richard Noll's character, which then of course affects one's scholarly reputation. And now that a video of this lecture has been uploaded at least twice on You Tube with 36,000+ views on this page and another 40,000+ on another, the possible damage to my reputation is exponentially increased. We saw this happen to "Crooked Hillary" during the recent election cycle. These sorts of things "stick" in the minds of people. It comes down to the heuristics of cognitive processing. We remember the "spin" of gossip, and do not bother checking facts. That's how the human mind/brain evolved. Fans of Dr. Peterson -- of which their are legion -- should not be disappointed in him for making such thoughtless remarks about my character and making mistaken factual claims about my books. The words coming out of his mouth were familiar to me -- it was the same spin or discourse that the Jungian community had crafted and mutually reinforced among themselves. I became the "shadow" of the Jungian community. Hence, because of the strong idealizing transferences that so many Jungians had to the imago of Jung -- an intellectual and spiritual hero whose ideas somehow existed outside of historical context -- I had to be demonized. To Anthony Stevens, a prominent British Jungian analyst, I was "Jung's Adversary" according to the title of an appendix to the paperback edition of his book, "On Jung." As any good Jungian knows, Satan is "the adversary." That is a heavy projection for the hook of that "Richard Noll avatar" who wrote those books in the 1990s to carry. Dr. Peterson is a man of excellent character. I bear him no ill will. One typo to correct from my comment below: Jung died in 1961, not 1962. See how easy it is make a mistake in an emotional moment . . . . ?

Speaking of typos "of which their are legion" made me suck air through my teeth. Could happen to anyone; comment momentum does things to ordinarily punctilious spellers. That aside, I can't wait to learn more about which ideas can transcend a person's life (and time and place of birth) and transform the world beyond. I need to be able to tell them apart from those ideas that are a foregone conclusion based on demography. This will be very important if we're ever going to decolonise mathematics. ^I'm just kidding, you're evidently not ridiculous and your ideas are much more nuanced than that. I want to learn about Jung so I'll keep half an eye out for books by Richard Noll.

I'll drop this here as a curiosity (which you may already be aware of). There apparently exists a book by Susannah Heschel called "The Aryan Jesus", which does have Nazi imaginery on the cover. This could explain, I suppose, where the false claim was born about your similarly-titled book, later to become part of what you refer to as the Jungian community's mutually-reinforced discourse.

On the other hand it could be that it could be that Nietzsche and Jung had some knowledge of the elite's agenda, rather than being prophetic. One of the oldest con's in the book is to get the people to believe that things are just developing naturally rather than planned. Worth referring to Plato's Republic about how culture is created and also Alan Watt on the same subject.

Either way it doesn't negate their points and only serves to bring them down a peg in terms of status as near prophetic, but at the same time, they weren't really wrong.

@@bookwyrm715 No not wrong but to find out where somebody is "really coming from" requires much research on the individual, what clubs they belonged to, what are the agendas of such clubs, who were they involved with etc But at the end of the day it can only be an interpretation of gathered information and can only be based on the weight of evidence gathered. Some change their minds mid stream for example.

I find it really interesting when he talks about how Jung turned his world upside down and how its hard going to read the Collective Works. I myself discovered Jung while I was individuating so everything he wrote made perfect sense, because I saw the truth of Jung's words in my thoughts and life. I often wondered how it would be for someone who who just came at it from a professional or academic angle.

Jordan, your wisdom is life-changing, and you are literally acting out the most difficult responsibility in the world; and that of course, is saving the damn world from Tyranny. The amount of people you have already reached is having such a profound affect on many people even in my own life, let alone around the world. Imagine how big you will be in 3 years from now. I think we all fantasize about you being the Philosopher-King of Canada. Honestly though, consider running for Prime Minister. Your example of living what you preach is such a calling for us to follow in your courageous footsteps of just getting down and fucking doing it. Whatever it is we need to do. You tell us, each individual that we have the power to do it. God damn Jordan. Okay and while typing this I just had a Synchronicty. When you mention the Gospel Singers that Paul Simon worked with, i was shook! My roommate introduced me to that album by Paul Simon just an hour ago! That's great. And I haven't had a synchronicity in a while! So I'm thankful. Also, taking on responsibility is such an exciting part of life. Things open up. When you take care of as much responsibility as you can, things get better. Your world around you gets brighter, and happiness is just waiting for you at the end of the day. I hope one day I will get to meet you. Alex Bär

I'd like to pose the idea that Archetypes are actual hyperdimensional entities inhabiting the realm of the Ineffable (a dimension present all around us at all times, whith which we can interface in part thanks to our brains) who from their sort of bird's eye view can meddle with three dimensional space the same way we could interfere with the activities of ants without them even realizing or being able to do anything about it, or as Jordan mentions, just like a puppet master can manipulate their puppets. Any comments on this?

Well, experiences on DMT, LSD or mushrooms could be an 'answer' to that question. Jung himself stated that people should be careful when they speak about hallucinations concerning this subject, that it is reality and too much of it. People who encounter such spiritual or religious experiences say it is the most real thing that ever happened to them. Mainly having the feeling of being dead, having no concept of time nor space and feeling at one with the universe. I always thought we are all connected to each other, each being an experiment of one consciousness. That said, I have never tried out any of them, but I have a similar (more dumbed down) experience on MDMA, where I first saw cities before being blasted in space and seeing the earth. DMT, LSD does that too, but blasts you even further, to a seemingly other dimension/realm. Hopefully this could give you some insights on your thoughts, although diverting too a whole other concept. Try to be open-minded to the subject because it contains answers, although answers that for the most, can not be grasped. Jordan Peterson also touches on these subject if you are interested.

I believe archetypes may have had something to do with conscious (or maybe unconscious) choice in their inception. Much like habits. And they may be subject to readaptation or reinvention, much like habits. I'm not sure we will ever definitively know enough about the unconscious to confirm this, but I find it fascinating how it and the conscious play off of each other. Thank you for exploring these topics, devouring so much reading on them, and introducing them to others. Thank you for your didactic passion and your grounded and balanced approach. This is what a good teacher looks like, and they come few and far between.

Pinocchio was actually published in 1881, and the Disney movie was made in 1940. Some parts of it were traced back to previous Italian novellas (Boccaccio's Decameron), to the Bible (Jonah's whale) and, more interestingly, to ancient Italian magical practices and alchemic theory in the symbolic nature of the names and characters. So there's plenty of interpretations to go around before making the story into a metaphor of ingenuity under totalitarian regimes.

Former polisci major here. Had Peterson remained in that field his analytical abilities would have pointed him to the fact that the post 1945 war WAS waged, by proxy not only until the (very much planned) "fall" of the Berlin Wall in 1990 but it is still being fought today in a war of globalism v. those who counter it in nation states such as Syria or Russia. And, correspondingly, the nuclear threat is worse than ever.
