I have to say- that & the follow up @ 38k miles- are the 2 best long term owner's reviews I've seen to date. I also wanted to film a review, but, you have done 10 times better than anything I could've done. Also need to say- respect your mods, especially the Ohlin's rear- sprung to your weight. That must be phenomonal, without a doubt. Other than cosmetic mods, I've kept mine stock, and, I'm amazed daily with the exceptional ride quality, power, lightweight, flickability, corner carving, etc... I've considered other bikes, but, can't see any reason to change. Glad you still enjoy yours & thanx again for the outstanding reviews.

I enjoyed your video, I just got a 2013 street triple with only 1800 miles on her. It's my first road bike I have been riding dirt bikes for years. My bike is still at the dealer getting prepped with things I wanted them to do. But I'm looking so forward to getting her home.

My 2010 STR has an Ohlins TR805 shock with KyleUsa linear linkage (solo rider), Racetech front springs, Arrow 3-1, Sargent seat, SuperSprox 520 conversion 49T rear, Triumph QuickShifter, manual CCT, Shorai 18Ah lithium battery with dedicated charger, and many assorted cf bits and accessories. I did the 12,000 mile service myself and the cams were perfect and only a couple of exhaust shims needed different size. Now has around 25,000 miles running beautifully. Effortless light handling, I never want for power and rarely need to downshift. Just a really fun bike to go on a tear for a couple of hours.

Been looking for a long term update for the STR for awhile. Great stuff fella. I have had my 2014 STR since April 2015. Love it & I'm sure even when I reach your mileage I'll love it just as much. I'm glad you mentioned the heated grips as I'm also looking at them, even if it's tucked away for winter, was just concerned if triumph bar end mirrors would still fit. Ride safe.

+Triumph Gunner Thanks for the comments. The bike seems to get better with age... the engine seems to open up and starts pulling stronger and smoother. You should still be able to use bar end mirrors with the heated grips, as the bar ends don't change (same as standard grips). Keep her upright and she'll treat ya' well.

You won't be disappointed with this bike as it's a fantastic do-all ride. The Ohlins definitely helps things out back but isn't a necessity for casual riding. Good luck with your search!

This makes me really really want a street triple. I currently have a 12' Daytona 675 that I bought new but due to back issues I can't ride it as much as I'd like to. Since I love the motor and the way triumph does things I know I need to stick with one. And what better than this, basically the same bike but much more comfortable! Great review and nice bike!!!

Brian Romero Thanks! You may want to consider putting riser clip-ons (Apex, Helibars, Attack, etc...) and possibly some lower rear-sets on for a more comfortable riding position. It'd be far cheaper than flipping your bike and taking a loss. Not to talk you out of an STR... but the D675 can certainly be made more comfortable with little effort. You'll most likely need longer brake and clutch lines if you go much higher than stock.

Friend of mine has a 07 Daytona 675. Bought used with a salvage title... He has put almost 60,000 in less than 3 years and not baby miles. He rides the shit out of it... And it still runs perfectly fine. I would not worry at all about putting serious miles on this engine. I think it all comes down to maint... change the oil... coolant when your supposed to. It will run long and hard for you.

+Alphabrovo121 Sorry for the delay in this response.. must've missed your original message somehow. Any way, the signals are eBay specials from M-Factory. They're cheap and work great, though I've had an issue with my left rear going out on me three separate times. The company always replaces the full set for me, but rewiring them in is a total PITA. As for the relay, I wired one in but actually prefer the faster blinking rate due to the fact that they're smaller in size than stock. I'd like anything to draw more attention to them and a faster blink rate draws the eyes quicker... at least that's my theory. So out went the relay. Happy holidays!

Do you think this would be a good bike as my second? I've had my license for a year with no accidents or falls. I started on a used 91 Suzuki GN as I didn't want to start on anything new. I'm concerned mostly about the power and weight difference as well as availability of parts and basic maintenance.

Yes, I think this bike is an excellent bike for all but the very beginner. The bike is super easy to ride and isn't scary unless you're completely ham fisted! You'll love the bike as it really does everything extremely well. And I'm proof that the bikes are solid and reliable. Good luck!

Just bought the same model in the same colourway - run-out pricing from the local dealer as they clear the decks for the new 765 RS. It's my second bike so I'm taking it pretty steady - still running in anyway. Love everything about the bike! I like the look of that Ohlins replacement shock but not sure if my riding skill justifies it. That Remus pipe looks great too - must get saving!!

Hey there, I have the same bike and had a few questions regarding the Speedy bars you installed. I'm interested in slightly wider than stock bars, but don't want a lower bar. Are they much lower than stock? Is the length of the cables sufficient for the wider bars? Finally, do you think the stock cables length is sufficient for a slightly wider and higher than stock handlebar? Thanks!

I had a '13 Honda CBR500R that I kept for 2 months before swapping over to the STR. Major difference. Not that the Honda was a bad bike by any means... just not the same league as far as power, handling, character, braking and hell... everything! The Honda does whip its ass in fuel economy, however. With that said, they're not meant to compete so really apples and oranges. I also have an '02 Dyna Super Glide. That's more like apples and donkeys.

FailsAndFights - Yeah... got the only available tune my dealer had - the Arrow Map. I don't have a PCV or Bazzazz so until I change headers and up the ante, I'm good with how it's fueled. I found that with the Map/Pipe, the bottom end pulls harder and the midrange opened up just a hair. Fueling seems smoother down low as well. Between that and modding the intake screen, she screams under heavy throttle!

Great review! I've got 91k on my '09 Street Triple and I love it :) I've had no major issues with it. Just regular maintenance and some wear & tear now. I commute, do multi-state touring and local canyons. Not a your pace though..LOL! I get 15-20k on my tires.

I just took off a set of Michelin Pilot Powers and I was able to squeeze 3300mi out of them before the sides were toast and all feel was gone. Admirable. They're a bit more numb feeling than Q3's, but the mechanical grip is certainly there if you learn to trust it. Interestingly... I wore the front out faster than the rear. By a slight margin. With Q3's, I usually got nearly a 2 for 1 (2 rears to every 1 front). Not sure why, but the fronts were going quicker on the PP's. I spooned on some Pilot Power 3's and will see how that goes. Out of the gate, the sides feel better with more feedback than the PP's. And they should, being a softer edge compound. If I can get anywhere near 2500mi out of them, they'll be my new go-to tire.

Thai Long Ly Becky York I have Michelin Pilot Road 4's on my awesome 2013 Honda CB500F ABS bike and concur with Becky. I'm currently at 11K and it looks like it can go another 10K. However, I don't ride my bike anywhere near like you do (aka, mine has chicken strips). Most of my riding is commuting and touring. I recently purchased the 2014 STR (in matte graphite) and plan to put PR4's on that too (since the current tires are done with) since most of my riding will still be commuting and touring, though I also hope to do more harder riding. Great review, definitely one of the best non-professional reviews I've seen on the STR. I learned a lot, even on things I'll probably never do (like the Ohlins suspension). You've been a great addition to Motorcycle.com and I think they need to use you and Jessica a lot more in their video comparison videos. I'll have to check out one of your gigs the next time I'm in LA.

Thanks for the support, MNoob. For the 18k service you'll want to replace the air filter, oil/filter, check steering/head bearings, change plugs and give the bike a total once over (brakes, cooling system, rotors, chain, etc...). For a major check (24k miles), you'll want to check the valve clearances and adjust/shim as necessary. If you can't do this yourself, have your local pro look at it. Throttle body synching should be done now and then as well. Check the manual for more details on what should be done, as this is what's off the top of my head. Good luck!

Well.. if you watch the entire video, you'll see I ride it hard and it's been reliable barring one rare engine issue. I'm the only one that I'm aware of that has had faulty cams from the factory. I personally think the STR is a much better bike than the ones you've mentioned, with the FZ09 the closest in performance. But you'll have to toss several grand into the suspension to make it anything approaching the STR and the chassis will still never be as responsive and communicative as the STR's. That motor, however, is a gem. Ride them all and decide for yourself... it's the only real way to know what floats your boat!

Filters, oil, fork oil, brakes, radiator, etc... I do whenever I get the itch. But usually around the 6k mark(s).

Awesome review! I'm thinking of swapping my current bike since I really miss riding a sport standard. After looking at this bike for a few years not getting the looks, it really has grown on me. I took a '15 out for a test ride last week and it was 40 minutes of massive smiles. Even though it's a bit cheaper, was the Aprilia Shiver ever on your radar? I'm worried I might miss the "character" of a v-twin bit the triple seems like a terrific middle ground choice.

highoctaneadventure I figured for the money, the STR was a better buy in the long run. It ticks all the right boxes and the triple howl and engine characteristics are pretty addicting. Especially if you put a pipe on it and open her up a bit. She pulls down low similar to a twin and winds out up top, similar to an I-4. Kind of the perfect street bike formula to me. Don't get me wrong... I love twins and the inherent grunt (and sounds). But there's something super sweet about the triple's smoothness and the way it makes power that always brings a smile to my face!

JayGTA Massive Congrats on the new ride! Same here... if I'm not riding her, I'm staring at her in the garage most days. I have the Triumph Comfort Seat. It's a bit firmer than the stock saddle and offers more support over the long haul. The shape is slightly different and allows easier transition from side to side as well.

Thanks. Same for me. When I first saw the lights, I wasn't sold. But now, I can't imagine anything else on the bike and I think the older round lights look dated. I know they're quite polarizing, but they do make the bikes uniquely identifiable from a distance. And they work great, too. I hardly ever have to use my high beams as the low beams throw a nice wide path.

Moacir Zardo Junior Yes, the Ohlins is a straight up swap... shouldn't take you very long assuming you have the right tools and a way to stabilize the bike. I think it took me about an hour, if that, to make the swap. Would've been faster had I had two extra hands and a real mechanic! Bear in mind the Ohlins will slightly raise the rear ride height, thus sharpening your turn in. Drop the forks a couple millimeters to offset the change if you want to retain the factory's geometry. Follow the manual's guidelines for a starting point with your Compression and Rebound settings (using D675's chart) and season to taste. Write back when/if you do the swap once you've had some seat time and let everyone know how it's working out for you. Cheers!

Moacir Zardo Junior The standard Ohlins TTX unit that comes from the factory on D675s do not have height adjustment. The unit I have has been factory modified and I do have adjustment on mine. However, in the lowest (shortest) position, the ride height is still higher than stock due to a longer shock body than the KYB unit.

Question about the Ohlins rear shock. Ohlins doesn't list a shock for the 2104 ST-R. Is the Daytona 675R somehow different with linkage or something or is it a direct swap?

It's a direct swap as the frames and swingarms are identical between bikes. The Ohlins will raise the rear slightly as it's a longer shock eye to eye. Linkage should be the same.

It's now 2017 and I have a question hopefully you can help. I will be buying a street triple but not sure which to buy. Either 2014 street triple r in your colorway with 2,800 miles on it or a 2016 Triumph Street Triple in white brand new both same price?

If it's between an "R" and non "R", I'd go for the R. 2800 miles is just barely broken in so I wouldn't sweat the mileage. New gets you a warranty, which is always comforting and the knowledge that you're the first to flog her. However, the '14 would have depreciated quite a bit and that difference in cost will buy a lot of tires, gas and track days. If you're just commuting or are a non-aggressive rider, then I'd say pick whichever one you like. If it's between either bike and the new 765, then I'd say pony up and get the new bike. It's better all around. Good luck either way!

Hi, Loved the video, got my Striple R for a year now (2013 model) and I was wondering if it's normal for it to be rather jerky running without throttle (so at around 1500rpm), not sure if I'm explaining myself clearly here, but it doesn't feel smooth at all just running on clutch. Maybe I need to let my dealership check the fuel intake/maps (I'm not experienced enough to do that myself, and that's putting it lightly). Could you also list the mods you have on it, I know you talked about them in the video, but a written list would be awesome :). Best regards!

nice review, I have the '13 model which I think is the same, only question, have you upgraded your seat, I notice stitching on it where mine dose not have, that's the only small gripe I have with the bike I don't care for the stock one and I can't seem to find a nice quality replacement, last time I checked with the well known seat manufacturers like Corbin and. Sargent they didn't have one for the new st3, thanks

Good eye! That's the Triumph Comfort Seat. It's a bit firmer to the touch than the somewhat spongy feeling OEM unit, but once your ass is perched on it for many a mile, it creates far fewer hot spots and numb areas. The pitch front to back is slightly different as well... it doesn't toss you as forward, so your nuts stay closer to your torso than the tank. After a 650 mile day on it, I thought I'd be toast... but the seat was great.

peter davis Yeah... it does. I don't get pitched forward as much and the comfort is better. A buddy rode my bike the other day and commented immediately on how much better the comfort seat is than his stock one. You'll appreciate the difference over the long haul.

You can find the Ohlins TTX's for roughly $5-600 online. Used, of course. I got mine as a take-off from a D675 that had less than 100 miles on it. Was sprung to my weight and the bike handles like it's on rails. Sweet, buttery rails.

Great video! I currently ride a 2000 Speed Triple 955i as a daily rider, but it's recently given up the ghost so I'm forced to look at upgrades while I borrow a family member's car (GROSS). I've been looking at the Speed Triple R because I'm so used to the 955cc engine, my mind thinks, ok, the 1050cc is the obvious choice; why would I even consider going "down" to the 675cc? The Street Triple R is so expensive, though. And, for shits and giggles, I decided to see if I could compare specs between my Triple and the Street Triple R, and to my surprise, on paper anyway, they're fairly close. I'm curious, though, when you say that it gets "frenetic" at 80 MPH, what exactly do you mean by that? On my work commute, I can easily hit 85-90 MPH. Thanks again for putting out a great video!

Randall Tabula Sorry to hear your bike has decided to stop obeying your orders to work! And I totally get the "suck" factor in being forced to drive... especially in traffic. The Street Triple is just about the ideal street bike. Sure, more power is always great... but where can you truly and safely use it? Not everyone is lucky enough to live at the base of a canyon where you can exploit a bike's potential more often than not. With that said, the power to weight ratio is great. The bike has enough power to keep it FUN. You can wring its neck much harder than you could a Tuono or R1... in public, at least. When I say frenetic, I mean that the revs are up near 8 - 9 k, depending on your size and weight when traveling above 90mph. And this is a TRUE 90... not what's indicated on the speedo (which is about 7% optimistic on average). It's not buzzy... just busy. Or frenetic. Certainly not a deal breaker by any stretch... just means that if you spend hours on end at elevated speeds, the bike may feel a bit "worked". Some people are more sensitive to this than others. Stepping off a Harley, this bike is buttery smooth at ANY rpm by comparison. Stepping off a Norge GT at those speeds, this bike feels like a jack russel terrier on crack. Also, because of the Street's lightweight nature, it's more flickable and fun in the twisties. The Speed Triple has an amazing power plant... that engine is a real gem. But... and a big BUT... is that it's much heavier to steer and throw side to side. If you're in the tight canyons or on a track, this is important. If you're mostly commuting or playing on the freeway, it's nice to have the extra ponies and grunt. In addition, if you're a bigger guy, the Speed may be a better option. Good luck. Hello from the bottom of the world in New Zealand. Question on the GPS. Im thinking of buying the same one from China. Is it possible to program in a route using twisty roads before setting off? Hey Jono. Thanks for the support. The GPS is one of those "destination first, route second" types. You can, however, choose between a couple of different modes and you can "avoid" tolls, highways, meteorites, etc.... Wish it had an "avoid assholes" function but then you'd never get anywhere... If it DOES have a route mapping option, I've never found it. And the instructions... good luck... hope your Chinese is better than mine. btw... my brother just left NZ... he was there for 7 years working for WETA.

Jono BNZ He's a scooter guy... but I'll convert him soon enough. :) I think you'll dig the GPS... especially for the $$. Mine still works fine... the internal battery is starting to fail pretty quickly, so it stays hard wired into the ignition at all times. Aside from that it's pretty solid. The glare is kinda nasty when direct sunlight hits it, making the screen difficult to see, but if you bluetooth it into your skull, you'll be fine.

It's been a while but I'm pretty sure the mirrors are from a company called KiWav. I found them on Ebay and they were somewhere around $100 for the pair, IIRC. Perhaps even cheaper. They're universal fit so you're good to go there. I have a set on my Tuono 1100 as well!

Omg..i think i saw a Nexx xr1r carbon helmet ? I have one to ( amazing helmet ) and a triple-R 2014 in the same color as yours. Im thinking about a new slipon and was looking at Remus and Scorpion. As far as I know, I am the only person that has had a specific issue with faulty cams. It was deemed improper installation from the factory and an isolated case. You shouldn't have this issue and can rest assured you'll be receiving a solid bike. Just make sure to seal up the gallery bolts on both sides with blue loctite or chances are you'll have small leaks there. Good luck and enjoy the bike!

The motor is the shining star of that bike, though not as smooth and refined feeling as the STR's. I'd love the power, though.

I wouldn't sweat it at all. I have a super short inseam (28") and can handle bikes up to 33.5" seat heights before I start sweating. The STR should prove no problem for you. You may not be able to flat foot both sides, but as long as you get one solidly planted on your toes, you should be OK. Don't let that stop you from enjoying a truly great bike!

holy crap!...are all those problems par for the course on these streeties?. I'm looking into a 2015 with less that 3000m on it. should I worry or expect to do all the work you had to do like with the oil weeping, the cam and head?.

The simple answer is NO. The oil weeping is a simple fix. It's a failure of the dealer in performing a simple task and mine dropped the ball in a big way. As for the cam wear, mine was an anomaly from the factory. I think the initial installation was botched, thus causing the premature and excessive wear. These engines should be pretty bulletproof, so I wouldn't worry at all. All manufacturers have horror stories of failure, so I wouldn't let that deter you from enjoying a great bike. If it breaks, fix it! Good luck!

Ahh... that's an EXCELLENT bike! I did a shootout for Motorcycle.com that included that bike and it far outclassed all the others in the test. I recommend that bike to tons of people and could totally see one in my garage one day. If not for that ugly ass radiator....! :)

Thai Long Ly I guess if I force myself to stare at the radiator it could become ugly to me, but in real life it doesn't bother me at all. maybe that's because I'm used to the radiator on my 2010 Speed Triple , it's pretty similar. they really don't bother me and on the xsr it strangely seems to disappear into the front of the bike somehow. the bike has plenty Corky looking appointments though. none of them really bother me, even the round rear light. I think all that stuff gives the bike character that most bike just don't have. what is really bothering me though is the stock signals, the stupid rear fender proboscis thing (of course) and the stock exhaust. All that s***'s got to go!

Good eye! The original pads had worn out and were basically useless. I opted for the HT Moto pads instead and have been happy with them thus far. They're currently on my both my 1050 and V4 1100. You can buy them in sheets and you must cut them yourself. They're cheap and peel off without any residue or removing clear coat.

Michael Sylvester Thanks for the tip. I've experimented with going +1 in the front as well as -2 in the rear. The actual character of the engine changes and the bike certainly reacts differently under throttle and in the way it makes its speed and power. It does certainly help with the top end and going +1 in front makes the speeds pile quickly above 6k rpm!

There are faster, bigger, stronger, and more expensive bikes out there. But I'm not sure any are as much a switchblade bike as this (on road, no dirt). From splitting lanes on the 101 during rush hour traffvck to carving Sand Canyon to devouring Button Willow, this bike does it all with ease. A linear power band and telepathic handling makes for an excellent middleweight bike. Good fuel economy and being light weight are all bonuses. Reliability is high, too. +Elior Koralashvili We're essentially the same size. My bike is actually taller than stock as the Ohlins TTX I have includes the height adjuster clevis, which raises the rear by a few MM's. This makes my bike ever taller than a stock D675R. With that said, I have zero issues riding this bike or anything up to 33.5" seat heights. It's all about getting comfortable pulling a "Captain Morgan" with one foot down and the other on the peg. As it stands, I can tip toe my bike, but cannot flat foot unless I'm off to one side. Don't let the tiny increase in height deter you from getting the bike you want. The R is a better bike and offers more adjustability that you'll appreciate in the long run. And you'll quickly get used to the added height with each and every mile. Good luck and let us know how you decide!

+Elior Koralashvili The lower Gel Seat or shaving the seat would be my suggestion - as opposed to using a lowering link. I'd be willing to bet that after a few weeks of riding the bike, you'll quickly grow accustomed to the added height and it won't bother you at all when coming to a stop. I totally understand your trepidation and was in the same boat as you in the beginning, but I can emphatically say that you'll overcome the added height in no time. Tall and heavy adventure bikes used to intimidate me (Tiger Explorer, BMW GSA, Caponord, etc...) but now I can handle them despite not being able to reach the ground AT ALL with both feet. Definitely gotta pull a Captain on those machines! And good idea on the vid... I'll find someone to help me shoot it and will post something up.

I would need to get off and walk it back. One of the big fears is stoping on a driveway slope.... The added height once the tire hits the ramp can come as a surprise but I guess I just need to be mindful of where I put my foot. Plus nothing screams dedication louder than pulling a capt Morgan 👌🏼👍🏼

+Jake Sisler I've only used the OEM Daytona 675 rearsets on this bike, so I can't speak to the aftermarket alternatives. The D675 sets work great on this bike and are a super cheap way of getting the pegs up and back with minimal fuss. I'm sure the Attack or Sato (or any adjustable) sets would be great, but I'm predominately on the streets and therefore don't need the added adjustability/crashability/lightweight nature of more expensive options. If I were mostly tracking this bike, I'd opt for some aftermarket sets.

fivefootsixtriumph Well... bear in mind that I've done some work to it to raise it up over stock. When I initially bought the bike, I could get on the balls of my feet, not completely flat... but close enough. You can always use a lowering link to start, if you're not completely comfortable. Just be sure to lower the front as well, or your geometry will change and handling will suffer. I'd advise no more than 20mm front and rear. Soupy's makes an adjustable link. It's easy to install and easy to adjust. They also make an adjustable kick stand in case you need one as well. . Beware, that your ground clearance will suffer and you'll start scraping hard parts way sooner than normal during aggressive cornering. Don't let the lack of "connection" to the ground scare you. I was freaked out by this at first, but after more seat time, I got used to it and now actually like the higher seats. The clearance is better and handling improves. Look at the new R1... 34" seat height. And that thing is a BEAST on the track (got to test one with with Motorcycle.com recently). I'm 5'5" with low barometric pressure. Inseam of 28". Thanks, dad. :( You can always shave the seat down, too. This is a super cheap way to lower the bike's standover height without messing with the geometry.

All true and good advice but I have always owned cruisers (except for my Bonneville which I still have) and I am used to and more comfortable with my feet planted firmly on the ground. .. Especially after a few beers at the local watering hole. If I could lower the triple and get all but my heels on the ground I could probably live with that but probably nothing less. ... Ride safe!

If you're referring to the seat height, the current answer is NO. However, when I first purchased the bike, I did lower the front and rear (via adjustable link) 20mm. This got me solidly on the balls of my feet both sides. The bike rode fine and I was still able to tear through the canyons and on the track despite the lowered chassis. The only downside I found was that it was much quicker to scrape hard parts (pegs, pipe) when charging through corners. After three or so months of riding it lowered, I returned it to stock and have learned to simply balance on my toes. With the installation of the Ohlins TTX, the rear has actually risen a couple millimeters over stock and is the same as the D675R. I am now used to the height and kind of dig it. The bike being so light makes it a non-issue, really.

They're from HT-Moto. Apex sells 'em. You buy them by the sheet and cut them out yourself. Get your craft on and customize the shape as you see fit. They work great and won't rip the paint off your tank if/when you ever go to remove them.
