The models are beautifully designed and flown by superb modelers! For the rubber "Wakefield" F1B planes, note the use of Delayed Prop Release (DPR) mechanisms - the model is launched hard with the propeller not turning at first. After gaining 15-20 feet just from the initial throw, a clutch mechanism engages and the rubber motor starts turning the propeller for the flight.
