F150 Fuel door won't shut
F150 Gas door won't shut
This video demonstrates how to quickly repair a loose fuel filler lid on a 2015 and newer Ford F150. TIt will take you less time to make the repair than it takes you to watch the video! If your late model (2015 and up) F150 Fuel Filler Door won't stay shut, or feels loose, then this video is for you! It's free. It's easy. It's fast!
If you need help reconnecting the spring, I made a very quick video about that on my new channel, Grill and Garage, and that video is here: • Loose fuel door spring...
This rechargeable headlamp might help (I've got one...this thing WORKS)! amzn.to/34PJmdx

I have created a new channel, Grill and Garage, and the first video is a much better/faster version of this video, but also shows exactly how to reconnect the spring, based on the feedback people have given in the comments. That video can be found here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/emS1m2ShZrmIadU If you like grilling/smoking meats, puttering in a shop, and working on your truck, you can find my new channel here: kzbin.info/door/ZQkcphDY4_5ohN1bfMFDNQ

As some commented here, I broke the clip too, the spring was tough and I also had Ford's extendable bump steps to work around. However there is a fix for the broken tab. I put a screw in place of where the tab was. Lesson 1. I screwed the door closed :). Backed off the screw, put the spring on and then I screwed it back in a little more for strength and had to file the tip of the screw and take out a small bit of plastic to make clearance. Works like new, thanks again for getting me started with your video!!

I love how you spent the last 2 minutes of the video explaining how easy it was to pop the clip off, then said “and now I’ll just pop the spring back on” then cut that whole section out. Arguable the hardest part of the process which resulted in a broken plastic spring tab for me. Thanks for the advice.

While I do appreciate all the details that went into this how-to, I'd have to agree with @twarg on that one point. That spring was indeed a bitch to get back on and this video did suspiciously cut out that part! No worries, I got it on, but c'mon, let's be honest in the future on these things, yeah?

Don't they always? KZbin saved me hundreds of dollars on penny parts. My hill assist malfunctioned. A $20 part from a youtube video and 20 minutes later (granted it's never a breeze, but crawling under the car or dashboard and saving hundreds is worth it) it was all done. Same with my chime when it acted up. They wanted to charge $200 just to look at it.

I spent 30 minutes, perplexed why my 2017 F150 fuel door was loose. I figured it was going to be another classic $500 fix at the dealer until I found your video. EXACTLY as you describe it, the plastic pin was not inserted all the way. Likely from recently driving 100+ miles on a dirt washboard road. I simply disconnected the spring, rotated and pushed the pin in snug, reconnected the spring and my fuel door is good as-new. Hint: I could NOT get that spring to reconnect using pliars. I had to wedge both hands up there and grab it with fingers to reconnect it. YMMV. It took less time to fix than it did watching your video. :) Thanks again.

Thanks. You saved me a trip to the dealer. One difference in my case was when I was twisting the lever trying to align the lands with the grooves, the exterior door kept swinging open. There was enough friction that the door wouldn't stay closed, so I used some duct tape to secure the door. The one thing I would add for the folks out in KZbinland is to go underneath once a year and give it a tap so you can avoid having to do this again. If it backed out once, it's going to back out again. It's quite obvious this would be a non-issue if Ford would put a locking device on the lever the first place. Yet another example of corporate greed and some bean counter wanting to save half a cent per unit.

Just to add a comment here that I had this happen twice on my 12th gen F150. I took a small drill bit and drilled a hole straight down into the end of the shaft, then installed a small screw and a washer large enough to prevent the shaft from pulling back through. It hasn't happened again in years now.

I viewed this video and the updated version about reattaching the spring. You failed to mention, or realize, that once the post locks in place, they don’t all align exactly as the one shown. After 90 minutes manipulating the spring, which was now completely out of position to reattach, and even removing and attempting to find another seated position for it, the connection point for the opposite end of the spring broke completely away. Guess I’ll now be purchasing an entirely new setup.

How did you reattach the spring while up in there. I’m have trouble with it. It’s a very strong spring.

Can you show how you took the assembly out? That was really important

For others: You don't need to take it out (as mentioned in video). Get up underneath, pop spring off with pliers (leave hanging in tab), rotate pin/tab until it registers, then simply push until it snaps into place (don't need to bang), reattach spring end (easiest way is to use standard pliers, and grab spring in middle, pry in to place)...done! Thanks for video!

Excellent video but uh...how are you gonna secure it so that it doesn't do this again?

Do you have to remove the plastic cap ( with the easy fuel words on it)? And how does it attach to the fuel inlet?

Hi Son. You do not need to remove any part of the assembly on a 2015 and later Ford F150. You can access everything from underneath the vehicle wtihout removing any fuel inlet or assembly (see the video). If you have an earlier model (2014 and older) then you need to remove the assembly, but you'll need to find a different video on that, as mine is a 2015.

What if you have to replace the housing (which is the issue with my 2015) do you have to remove the easy fuel cap.

That is my question too. When removing the entire housing, do you have to remove any portion of the gas filling port? Or will the housing come out as is? Looks like there is a ring of rubber that goes around the filler neck that may be able to stretch around the filling port. Is that correct?

How did you manage to get it off though, I have a ring just like your black one where it says easy fuel and I have no idea how to get it off to take off the rest of the door
