UPDATE: August 15, 2023. I finally sold this to a used car dealership this morning for $10,000 even.
It needed an oil change, state inspection, brake fluid flush, and new brake pads, and a minor body shop repair. I decided not to sink any more money into this.

Make sure to inspect it really well and/or have some kind of warranty. It's still a fun and zippy car when in Sports Mode, and "comfortable" when in Comfort Mode. Nicely done. I have the 2012 F30 320d sport line with the red and black seats and interior, with 160 000 miles and it's very reliable and driver friendly. Would have loved to have had rear folding seats and heated steering wheel as standard, for the sticker price. Only major issues were driver side lock replacement and shocks replacements, that was out of warrantee at about 100 000 miles. Your issues, during the after market warrantee was quite a lot but glad the warrantee covered it. I also was told to replace the tensioner and fan belt as a preventative measure at 90 000 miles but when inspecting the old parts, it practically looked like new.

It's very fun to drive, but I feel like I was unlucky in having these breakdowns with my 2015 320i model. After experiencing even more problems with my 2002 BMW 325i, I'm glad I purchased the additional warranty insurance. I'm still nervous about the belts, because the dealership recommended replacement, but a 3rd party service place said they were fine. I haven't replaced them yet. Personally, I see very minimal fraying at the edges. Since getting my new X3 m40i, I'm wondering if I should go ahead and sell the 320i (before new problems arise), instead of keeping it as a second backup driver.

@@sc1 All I can tell you from experience is that preventative measures are better than the cure. Changing those items will give peace of mind but it might not be necessary at all. Remember a car is a depreciating asset that is why I want to drive my F30 until the wheels fall off. Even if you get another car, you will still be concerned about that vehicles' own issues.

I had a 2014 328i that had 79400 miles on it when I traded it in. I was fortunate that the only thing it needed was a new thermostat and both doors started failing to open. The passenger side was covered by warranty while the thermostat and the doors wasn't. It cost me around $1800 to fix all those issues. I even put in a Dinan tune to get it close to 300hp. I only paid $21000 for it certified used. My 5 year cost of ownership was $26,600, and that includes two new tires and an extended warranty. I don't know if I was just lucky, but that car was as reliable as my wife's Toyota, and I drove that thing hard. It was one of the best cars I have ever owned, it always put a smile on my face whenever I drove it.

Wild repair list for a car with only 50k miles on it! I bought an E91 M sport wagon in 2013 with 70k miles on it and have only done oil and filter every time it was stated in trip computer, plus suspension struts all round and brake discs and pads, and 2 batteries over the entire time I've had it, which is now 9 years. But these parts are somewhat consumables particularly when you're talking about 9 years ownership and 140k miles on it during that time. So far I've done 140k miles in it, and the total on the clock is 210k miles, with basically the entire engine, gears, and everything other and suspension struts and brakes being original!! Unbelievable car for durability. Some stupid bits failed like the rear window wiper and the window in the boot lid that also opens for no apparent reason failed but I let all those things be disabled by the dealer when I had it in for oil an filter change cause they make no difference to the use of the car and are not required for MOT test pass. Going to be gutted when it finally dies cause it is an absolute soldier!!

Yours just had the normal wear and tear, and the expected replacements. I'm just wondering if I was just very unlucky, or the 320i model in 2015 as a whole was not built that great. I just wish there were an easy way to know which BMW models will be durable (before buying).

@@sc1 That said so far the g20 line 3 series are getting good reviews with only more minor niggles. The steering failure you and a lot of others had is imo totally unacceptable and bmw should've done all those repairs free of charge and been made to do a recall as it's dangerous if your steering fails while motoring. It's making me choose a different brand for the first time in near 20 years particularly because they handled it so badly.

Thanks for sharing your honest review. One thing that frustrates me are the dealership scams. I have a similar experience like you, but not BMW, other brand, my car would not start. Dealership claims its oil pump failure and cost couple of hundreds to repair. I thought to myself that cant be right, its a fairly new car, 2 yrs old. So i got a home-based mechanic to check and he said was low battery. Went and bought new car battery and works fine till today. From that day onwards, i trust my own mechanic and be extra aware on dealership scam advices.

I almost have to scratch my head at the BMW crowd and maybe at the luxury car crowd as a whole. So many seem to think it's just ok and par for the course to have thousands of dollars of parts fail in the first few years of ownership. Any new car I purchased I'd be downright upset and angry if I had to replace any component in the first few years of a car's life outside of tires and brake pads. You have a literal laundry list of issues for a car that hasn't been driven that many miles all said and done.

42,000 less 12 000 sale , is 30k for 7 years motoring around 4.5k per year. I'm planning on buying a 2013 328 goes much faster for $6200 usd ( 10k NZ) it's one owner and serviced religiously on time by the main dealer. I will keep it 3 years and sell it around 95,000 miles for about 8k nz. So I will have oil 3 times and filters, set of tyres 2k and allow 4 k for timing chain. My cost of ownership will be around 8k nz excluding insurance 5k usd or 1.7k per year. I will have a better driving experience 240 hp, but you got to have a new one rather than a ten year old one. But it's a much cheaper experience letting someone else take the depreciation hit.

I think you have already bought a new BMW, so my comment is probably moot. Objectively, I don't perceive this BMW as good value. In 7 years of ownership from new, the repair costs ($6233 with insurance or $7133 if there had been no insurance) were about 20% of the initial purchase price. For a new car, I think this is really quite high. Subjectively, the BMW may offer a driving experience and stylistic experience that other cars do not offer, and perhaps this was worth it to you or others who enjoy this. I would have recommended competitive offerings from Acura, Infiniti, Lexus, which may provide a more economical ownership experience, while still delivering a high degree of driving pleasure.

Yes, I have now since purchased a new BMW X3 m40i. I am finally selling off my 320i tomorrow, for $10,000. Yes, it is not a sensible or economical purchase. Probably not smart, but I felt ok with paying extra for the BMW driving experience.

@@sc1 Yes, if we only evaluated cars objectively then we just all drive a sensible Toyota. But of course there is an emotional aspect for people who enjoy cars, and a black BMW is a very attractive vehicle. The resale is decent. Up in Canada your car would probably retail for closer to $16000 USD or more, but our cars tend to be more expensive here and are still greatly inflated by the post pandemic supply issues.

That’s similar to my mileage, but as you can see, I started having major issues this year. Without insurance/ warranty coverage and without BMW covering my catalytic converter, it could have cost me over $9,000. Yes, I think you can probably make it last 2-3 more years, but it’s risky. Some of the plastic parts in the engine start to get old. Also you should plan to do some DIY maintenance or find a low-cost mechanic.
@staysin3051

@@sc1 Yeah that’s what I’m curious about because they are selling it for $17,000 which I think is relatively cheap for how low of miles that is, but I’m going tomorrow to see it and find out if anything is wrong with it. I just wanted to hear what your perspective would be if you would buy a used one around those miles or just stay away from it.

I’m relatively new but, the early rear brake pad replacement, injector failure, and steering rack seems to be the premature/unusual items to me. Would you consider your driving style very aggressive? Are you particular about where you buy gas?
@sc1
@sc1 10 ай бұрын
I think I got an unlucky car. I am a very gentle driver. I avoid potholes, no hard braking, and infrequent fast acceleration. (but I admit to skimping on premium gasoline sometimes) that steering rack was the final straw. it should not have failed like that just by steering in the parking lot.

Just my opinion: I don't think it is very reliable beyond a few years. I saw my 2015 suffer extreme, tow- truck-needing failures due to fuel injector failure, and then a steering rack fall-off malfunction within 7 years. Your mileage might vary, but I recommend some kind of extended warranty or insurance like I purchased...

I bought a 2017 at the dealership for 20,000k, and 26,000 miles. Have not had any issues. I think a 320i is a good daily driver, because it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles. People speak as if other car brands never break down and are cheap to fix, nonsense.
