I show you how to change the high pressure fuel pump on a 2.4 ecotec in this 2015 Buick Verano, it’s the same process on all ecotec engines, I also briefly explain code P0172 and a bunch of other things.

Thank you for uploading this! Our 2013 Verano check engine light has been periodically coming on and off for the past year, and it's performance has slowly declined. It has been struggling to accelerate in whatever gear it is in until we push the pedal hard enough to force it to down-shift. The check engine light was on when we took it in to Tuffy for new brakes today (normally I'd do the brakes myself, but our garage is not available at the moment), so we had them run the codes. He told us it was P0172 and P0300, and he reached the conclusion that we would need to replace the high pressure fuel pump. I've worked on my own vehicles all my life, but they tend to be older and I honestly had no idea that modern cars actually had 2 fuel pumps. So I came home, researched the issue, and initially had my doubts when I first saw it. But then I landed on your video, and you had everything I needed to complete the process. Our 2013 Verano required a 17 mm wrench for the one fuel line, and we had to pick up the fuel line removal tool for the other, but that was only an extra $11 so it worked out well. Spent a little less than $400 total, which definitely beats the $750-$800 that we would have had to pay to have Tuffy do it (not that they don't do good work). End result, after a single trip around the block the check engine light turned off. We took it on the freeway and the car accelerates like it's brand new again! So thank you friend!:)

Working on a 2015 verano, crank no start, no codes, checked all fuses and swapped relays. I know there's a HPFP under the hood but what about the pump in the tank? Possible that whent out not pushing fuel to the high pressure fuel pump? No codes so don't really have a direction to go, have not checked spark yet

If you have spark then I’d change the in tank pump or low pressure pump as it’s called, if you have no spark then check all your powers and grounds going to the coil packs. There’s a fuel pump fuse and a relay under hood as well as a fuel pump module located in the trunk, if the module had failed it will simulate a bad fuel pump. The only way to test the module is to put in a known good one and see if it will run.

@ranger.auto.repair after talking with the driver, she said it was sputtering and then shut the car off, would not start after that, with no codes pointing words the high pressure pump I was going after the in tank pump, but wanted to get some other opinions, don't have a scan tool to show rail pressure and if it also shows the commanded pressure like with cummins inside would show, diesel tech by day and auto tech at night since none of my friend can fix there own stuff lol

If you have a gauge you can connect to the rail, I think your only going to see low pressure but that’s enough to tell you the in tank pump is working, key on engine off pressure should be 55-60psi with no drop in 5 minutes. If the key has to be cycled more than once then the tank pump is bad.

@ranger.auto.repair I'll look around for a gauge, thanks for your help!

I replaced the high pressure fuel pump due to this video and the front fuel line (the short piece connecting to the input of the pump). Now it sounds like it has an exhaust leak. Can't find anything out of place. Reset/relearned system. No engine light codes. Still can't find issue.

My car is also a 2015 Buick verano, it’s only showing p0172 code but my high pressure pump is at 580psi at idle, and the cars fuel pump is at 58psi at idle, what else could it be setting the check engine light to come on?

P0172 is system too rich, check your air filter and see if it needs to be changed, if it’s got 100,000 miles or more and the spark plugs didn’t get changed, I’d change them, same with the upstream and downstream oxygen sensors. That’s all I’ve ever done and it solves the issue usually .

I’m not getting dieseling, but I’m getting very bad fuel economy since the code was thrown, that tells me it’s this high pressure fuel pump, no?

It’s possible, depending on the mileage you could do a plug change (tune up) first before condemning the high pressure pump. When the pump fails you’ll have several codes. Also drivability problems.

Im working on mine, p00c9 i dont have fancy diagnostic tools so im throwin a pump on mine hopefully fixes it. Limp mode and undriveable.

P00C9 is Fuel Pressure Regulator High Control Circuit Low Voltage which could be a bad high pressure fuel pump, or you have a short in the wiring going to the high pressure pump. Be sure to check your wires also because even if you replace the HPFP if the wires are damaged going to it you’ll have the same problems you have now. Sometimes on GM connectors the pins get pushed back from dozens of reasons and they will cause problems. This job was fairly easy and I wish you the best!

Has yours been a solid car? I'm looking at one of these to get my daughter for her graduation. It's a bit of a sacrifice for me, she's a great kid. I'm looking at a 2015 one owner same color as yours with 40k miles on it for 17k. It's a nice car, nicer than my 1st car.

I bought a 2015 Verano as a 2nd car a few years ago. Bought a single owner car that had 70k miles on it. It's been a solid car and my son has basically put 30k miles on it in that time frame. The only things I have done on it: oil changes, plugs / coil packs, thermostat (it went bad) and a battery. All were easy for me, the DIY'r, to fix.

I know she wants a Jeep Wrangler they are expensive. The ones in my price range have over 50k miles. I only buy American, these Veranos seem like nice cars. Probably going to buy it this afternoon and hide it at my shop to not give away the surprise until her graduation.

I wouldnt recommend it. Its reliable if you atleast change the oil every 2000 miles. If you dont they the timing chain tends to scratch wiggle and break.
