These journalists lose all credibility with me when they say something boneheaded like the LT4 is an "old pushrod 16 valve engine". Guess what else is old, DOHC engine technology. These so-called "old" pushrod engines have several benefits over DOHC including less weight, compact packaging, lower center of gravity, less cost, ease of service, and more low-end torque. I applaud GM for ignoring the media and continuing to use OHV technology. And what was that statement about "sadly, the electronic limited slip rear end remains". What??? I've heard nothing but praise about GM's e-diff. Its what helps you get through the corners without swapping ends. You seemed to think the Z06 was pretty awesome on the track. Dated, traditional, or old school? No. Other than not having costly hybrid electric drivetrain, dual clutch or AWD, the Z06 is pretty much at the top of the technology game. Lets see, it has direct injection, cylinder deactivation, VVT, dry sump oiling, magnetic ride, space age aluminum structure, carbon ceramic brakes (Z07), sophisticated electronics throughout, wind tunnel developed aero package (Z07), standard e-diff, 7-speed manual, quick shifting 8-speed auto, etc. Far from old school or dated tech.

1 lt1 is hevier than boss302 2 ohv engines are longer cuz of biger bore and that is why they take same amount of oil as dohc so maintnace cost is quite the same 3 difrance in height and COG is about 1,5 and 1 inch and that is not enough to make a difrance 4 lt1 as crate engine cost about the same as boss302.ls3 is cheaper but it is a8 year old engine based on 15 year old one 5 low end tq have nothing to do with ohv configuration 6 lt1 vct is "cam in cam" system so it dosent give the fexebility of dohc vct 7 from thechnical point of viev cylinder deactivation is nothing special - its just pushrod that shortens so cam lobe dosent lift it - so no greatness can be found here all is relative well not all: 1 ohv enforces 2v per cylinder and that lower the safe rpm red line and berathing of the engine especialy in high rpm 2 worse fueal eficiency in high rpm 3 dohc responds beter to any kind of tuning

*****(1) What are you talking about comparing the weight of an engine to a whole car? The LT1 in the standard Corvette is lighter, far more compact, and not top heavy like the Coyote 5.0 in the Boss 302. (2) I was referring to the cost of manufacturing and not maintenance cost, although there is likely more labor cost for engine repair on a DOHC. (3) The overall height of the motor does make a difference for packaging on the Vette. GM went to great lengths to keep the supercharger ultra compact on the LT4. I believe it is only about an inch taller than it would be with a standard intake manifold. The big packaging issue with Ford's DOHC is not so much the height but the massive width of those giant heads that also make the center of gravity higher. Note that the Z06 has dry sump oiling which allows the engine to be placed even lower in the chassis to further take advantage of center of gravity. (4) What crate engines sell for is not a good measure of actual manufacturer cost as it depends more on market demand. (5) DOHC engines are typically designed to rev higher and make more top-end HP but they also tend to be peaky and not as enjoyable for every-day driving (Ferrari DOHC motors are a good example of high RPM HP but weak low-end). How often are you really going to be revving the snot out of your daily driver anyway? OHV engines don't rev as high and are typically geared toward low and mid-range torque (great for every-day drivability). (6) I think VVT tech on either OHV or DOHC is a good thing. (7) That's not how GM's cylinder deactivation works. How could you have a pushrod that shortens? LOL. It actually works with oil passages and circuitry that can turn off pressure and collapse the specially designed lifters. It may not be the most advanced tech but it is clever tech that allows us to continue buying big cube motors in a time when regulations are pressuring manufacturers to downsize their motors for economy/emissions.

Lost all creditibility with this statement at 2:45 "Sadly though, the electronic rear limited slip remains" Sadly it remains? This piece of hardware is partly responsible for the extreme Z06's handling performance. It works phenomenal in the Stingray Z51, and again here in the Z06. Your comment is evidence you do not understand the importance of a variable electronically controlled limited slip in performance applications. A car of this caliber is clearly too much for you to handle, understand or accurately review.

I have driven a GT3 when I was in the market for something that wasn't A 430. I chose the Gallardo 560-4 over the car that randomly catches fire, and as an owner, not a magazine racer, this Z06 would, will, has, and will always make an example of the GT3. A refresh of the GT2 would be a much better comparison.

im not saying the zo6 isnt an incredible feat especially at the pricepoint, but if you really want to go fast on a budget yould get a SC ginetta (here in england at least). all im saying is as much as both ginetta and the zo6 are cheap and genuine alternatives as trackday cars to the gt3, stradale etc you can definatly see where the money has gone in the more expensive cars

You lost all credibility in this review when you called the engine "OLD". 1:40 Just because the engine has pushrods does not mean it is old, and you know it. You're also likely aware of the many benefits of the small block pushrod design versus an OHC engine so don't make stupid comments like calling this phenomenal powerplant "OLD"!

is an OLD design, but new technologies... + this design works better than dohc engines when is supercharged. currently one new z06 buyer already blown his engine and supercharger, and chevy offer an engine replacement and look into such problem.
@SnazzyZubloids
@SnazzyZubloids 9 жыл бұрын
He wasn't referring to the engine itself, just the pushrod technology. The engine is a brand new design. Heck, for that matter, batteries are old technology too. Just because the technology is "old" doesn't mean the technology doesn't still work. Technically, the overhead cam technology is actually more outdated than pushrods with cam-in-block. The first OHC engine was built in 1903, and DOHC engines have been around since 1912 thanks to Pugeot, whereas pushrod w/ cam-in-block has been around since 1930. However, the first OHV (overhead valve) engines have been around since around 1902 or so thanks to Mr. David Buick. Either way, pick which 100+ year old technology you prefer. Calling one of them outdated over the other is silly.
@SuzukiKid400
@SuzukiKid400 9 жыл бұрын
Mike Bircher I agree with you on all fronts and I like your battery analogy which helps demonstrate how a technology that was developed a long time ago can be reinvented and improved over time. Excellent post. I make my conclusions on the credibility of a design based on the output facts, and a modern GM pushrod motor can hold its own against any other IC motor for sale today when evaluated against criteria such as value, cost, efficiency, compact design, mass, simplicity and reliability.

True, there does seem to be a troubling amount of evidence pointing to timing being pulled and/or heat soak. Regardless, this car wasn't really intended to be a straight line racer, though, inherently, all powerful cars can also go fast in a straight line. Some just go faster. I have to wonder about how much the aerodynamics played a role in the loss as well, since the Z06's are much more aggressive. However, the timing issue is still a major handicap. One the majority of new Z06 owners (hopefully myself included in the near future) won't experience, as most will be doing normal driving around town and occasionally a 1/4 mile track. The true track enthusiasts on Corvette Forum are quite disappointed, although most are buying their Z06 anyway, regardless of the evidence coming forth.

No viper won't match it with better tires. It was 2 seconds faster than the zr1 with straight slicks which are likely 1-2 seconds faster around a track than these are. These are NOT!!!! Slicks. Z06 has better balance, power, much better brakes, better aero, better suspension and better trans. And yes with the rev matching it's good game and also has the best traction management software in the world. Along with tricked out differentials. How please tell me how is the viper going to beat this with better tires? It might be a second faster around a track with these than the corsa's which on paper on almost as sticky.

Some folks seem to forget the mindset of GM. In the May 2014 edition of Motortrend, GM put a a new Z/28 takes on a GT-R and a Porsche Turbo-S and wins by a nose but wins. I venture to say that the new Z06 is better than the Z/28 and the Z06 should soundly tronce Porsche, Ferrari and Nissans, for a lot less money. GM IS PUTTING IT DOWN!!!

Why did Chevy feel the corvette needed cylinder deactivation? If corvette owners are worried about mileage they would buy a Volt .
@SnazzyZubloids
@SnazzyZubloids 9 жыл бұрын
Lots of Corvette owners, myself included, enjoy long road road trips to visit race tracks, enjoy winding back roads, and the thrill of the open road and driving experience in general. The soul of the Corvette is its accessibility and drivability under a variety of conditions. That extra MPG per tank can really come in handy on a 1200 mile road trip when the next gas station is 150 miles out in the middle of some Arizona desert. I still get a kick out of the fact that, with cruise control set at 85mph and in 6th gear, my Corvette gets about 28-30 miles per gallon with air-conditioning on, or even with the targa roof off, and it doesn't have cylinder de-activation.

EPA regulations and gas guzzler tax. With cylinder deactivation the Corvette is rated at having higher MPG than it would without it. It's not there to sell itself as an economical car, it's there to appease the EPA and avoid the guzzler tax.

Possibly so, but it seems the new Z06 really is that good. Even Top Gear UK, who tend to be Corvette haters, have given heaps of praise to the new Stingray and Z06. However, there is the problem with timing being pulled and heat soak, causing a loss of power under very hard driving. www.topgear.com/uk/car-news/corvette-z06-c7-first-drive-2014-11-25

I've watched plenty of Chris Harris' videos, among other respected car reviewers, who become so intoxicated with a car's performance, they have nothing negative to say. doesn't sound clichè when a journalist says that the new car is faster and better. of course is faster and better, that's why is a new model. i don't think we will ever see a new model that's slower and generally worst than the older model it replaces

Lanse1984 we know you love the Z06 cause I can see you've been commenting on other people's comments. Yes the Z06 is fast in a straight line but if thats what you're buying a Z06 for than you're buying it for the wrong reason. This is still slower than most supercars but I don't think that is what GM is trying to accomplish as they are focused on beating track times. Would love two see this against the GT3 or the GT3 RS when that comes available, I think the Porsche might still win but the vette would give it a run for its money literally. But my point is that the Z06 is an amazing machine but its not faster than most supercars and the quality is still not up there cause I bet within a year you're going to hear squeaks and rattles ( probably things coming off to ) as that has happened with the regular Stingray.

You're going to the wrong dealer. Try MacMulkin in New Hampshire. There are a few high volume dealers in the US that are not only not marking them up, but will sell to you for under invoice because their allocation from GM is so high all they want is high volume sales.

Pushrod an Old engine? OHC was invented in 1903! Pushrods are better for supercharged engines, they stopped being retards and using OHC in top fuel dragsters before this entire century. you don't need the volumetric efficiency of OHC or DOHC when you have boost, in fact it is just more weight and parts to move that aren't helping in anyway except by adding wear and tear You like a huge powerband and low end torque, plus more longevity, you want pushrods. the parts might weigh more than some OHC but you aren't moving pushrods all the time like 4 camshafts in DOHC so it is actually less work to move, that's why you get low end torque, less work to get the job done means more power available

The Porsche GT3 is all-motor and the 911 Turbo is a grand tourer, so you can't can't compare either of these to the Z06. We are going to have to wait till the Porsche GT2 comes out to make a direct comparison.. Duh!
@vernonprice5986
@vernonprice5986 9 жыл бұрын
Of course you can compare them. The Z06 is BOTH, thanks to its magnetic ride control. Touring mode is compliant and quiet, sport and track modes are hardcore and loud. It's not Chevy's fault that Porsche decided to make the GT3 all motor, the Z06 will still destroy it for less money.
@4esttube
@4esttube 9 жыл бұрын
Chevy changed the Z06, it used to be all-motor (and that was one of the things that was so cool about it). The Porsche GT3 has always been all-motor, because it's referencing GT3 class racing which restricts the use of forced-induction. A racecar version of the new Z06 would not be able to compete in the GT3 class, and be forced to compete in the faster GT2 class. Therefore, it's very obvious these cars are no longer direct competitors.
@vernonprice5986
@vernonprice5986 9 жыл бұрын
Forrest Slater Of course they are. The GT3 is Porsche's track car, the Z06 is the Corvette track car. That's why they're comparable, not because of their aspiration type.

Yeah, $400k is pretty steep. For that price, it better run like a cheetah with its tail on fire. Think about the prestige of the other cars in the price range (or below!). Lamborghini: Aventador, Huracan, Murcielago, Gallardo. Any Ferrari that isn't an F12 Berlinetta or LaFerrari. Any Porsche but the 918. Any McLaren but the P1. Viper @ $100,000 (post price cuts). Corvette Z06 @ $85,000, etc. Who in their right mind, looking to spend close to half a million on a car, is even looking at Ford? Sure, the wealthy collectors will have one (Jay Leno, Shaq, Ralph Lauren, etc), but most people in the market for ONE supercar will probably not be looking at Ford.
