Am I the only one annoyed by the kids constantly yelling in the audience? The parents should teach their children some basic courtesy

They are cheering up for the players. Chinese are not like Japanese, we are very direct and does not care about minor things. so shouting in a match has nothing to do with curtesy here, it only shows these young kids love this game and these players. different country has different life styles, so don't judge based on your own values. whistling to a girl is absolutely common in the west but may caused your head been chopped off by Muslims in middle east.

yang guangsha I respectfully disagree. Although I have zero intention in starting a debate, I must insist it's a courtesy issue. Table tennis is not a silent sport, and chanting/cheering/yelling/clapping is acceptable between the points. But if you pay close attention you'll find that the kids often continue to shriek when the players are serving, which may distract the players and the rest of the audience who try to focus on the match. Calling this a cultural phenomenon implies that it's acceptable and set in stone, which I disagree. I believe it can be and should be changed. And doing so won't take long. In case you think I'm some sort of bigot who knows nothing about Chinese culture, I'm Chinese (born and raised in China).

+deep dark Surprised that people still use the concept of "civilization," a product of cultural imperialism and Eurocentrism. Also surprised that people can make ignorant and idiosyncratic generalizations about other cultures with ease. I mean, how would they feel if others make the likewise generalizations about themselves? Such as: "Oh there is a college shooting in the U.S. today, the U.S. people are just so violent by common knowledge." Well, I hope one day people will not see the world as black or white, good or evil, and right or wrong. Only then can we communicate in a way that make real and significant social change.
