www.autobytel.com/kia/k900/201... Kia has been building cars for over 20 years now. And during that time the brand has grown their line-up of cars. What started as extremely affordable econo-boxes has bloomed into mid-sized cars offered at a great value; and now we have the K900 which pushes the perception of what a luxury car can be. The 2015 Kia K900 has a base price of $59,500.
If Kia is going to be selling a luxury car, then said car must look the part. On the outside the K900 has a stylish signature grille, adaptive front projector headlights, LED daytime running lights, and 19-inch wheels. Out back the K900 looks like a BMW. It is hard to sell a luxury car to luxury car buyers without a potent power plant under the hood. The 2015 Kia K900 is powered by Hyundai's TAO 5.0 liter V-8 GDI engine that makes 420 horsepower and 376 lb-ft. of torque. Fuel economy is 15 MPG in the city and 23 MPG on the highway.
On the inside, Kia has tried really hard to get the luxury part right. The seats are incredibly comfortable and covered in soft Nappa leather. All the touch points, materials, and dash layout all give the K900 a very upscale feel and look which is important in order to get the buyers looking for an Audi or Lexus. Finally Kia offers a level of technology that is not readily available at this price point which sets the car apart from the rest of the luxury car player.
Kia says the buyer of the K900 is looking for style, technology, luxury, and value. Brand perception is up and hopefully the K900 can make a positive impact for Kia.

I don't care if it is called, KIA, Hyundai Genesis or Audi, if it drives great, has a good engine, looks half decent and is awesome value ! Then people can think what they want to!

Maybe they could've made a personalized badge for that car. I mean, that KIA sign just doesn't fit the car's price or look.

Congrats to Kia for not just copying what the Japanese and American manufacturers and slapping on a badge to fool people. They had the balls to call it what it is, and that's how you grow a brand. Mercedes didn't start out with an S Class.

Actually that argument is invalid. The Hyundai Genesis has a personalized badge, and considering that they are partnering Korean companies, it's not a bad thing.

Kia has without-a-doubt come a long way. I saw one of these in going into Boston today and was blown away by how gracious it looked. Coming up on the rear, I thought it was a Mercedes, or a new BMW no one had ever seen, but a Kia? This car is setting the bar!!!

Finally an unbiased review of the K900. I've sat in this car several times and the materials are all high quality even down to the lower parts of the trans tunnel and the doors. I'm 6'4 and my 5'9 friend sat in back with room to spare. The K900 is very comfortable and definitely worth considering if you use your brain. 10 yr/100k mile powertrain warranty, who else is doing that? Def not anything from Germany.

As a salesman for a Kia Dealership, I notice that most customers that come in love the brand, the product and everything else in between. Th problem is that they're blinded by the brand itself. They KNOW that the car is worth every bit of the price but for them, is a status thing. Customers would much rather spend the extra money because they don'y want to be seen in a Kia, than to be in a quality car for the right price. We all have grown to fit in with the crowd. Everyone one wants to keep up with Jones's and if you're in anything else, you must be poor. Sadly, that's how most are.

Or some of us understand what a TRUE luxury car is. And some just have a preference for certain makes. Kia has always been just a generic economy car imo. The name KIA just sounds generic, But hey that's my personal opinion others may feel empowered behind the wheel of one of those things, And hey more power to them. But I'll pass!

D Money I remember when Lexus was just Toyota's attempt in copying Mercedes. I'm sure at one point, the name Lamborghini sounded quite "tractorish." But not anymore. I'm sure Kia has the same long-term strategy in changing ignorant perceptions like yours. I prefer being open minded and know how to judge a car based on what it is, not what emblem is slapped on it.

D Money You're not just mad because I called you out on your closed-mindedness, and you know I am 100% correct! It's ok, you feel free to believe that luxury is about brand names. You're the sort of idiot who spends $300 on Beats headphones just because of the brand name, when the product is absolute rubbish. I don't drive a Kia, but obviously I know a lot more about cars than you. Otherwise you would know that in 1991, everyone was calling the Lexus a Mercedes copycat. Plus you would know that at one point, Lamborghini was famous for making tractors. I did notice you did not come back with any facts, just more bullshit.

Someone should tell the reviewer that Kia has actually been making vehicles since 1944 and is Korea's oldest automotive brand. Do your research bloke! I have an Optima and would love to sample the 5.0 Tau V8 GDI package. I also own a V12 Daimler and would have no problems owning a Quoris which was the K900/K9 model's original name. Lovely car.

I think the 5.0 GDI is a excellent engine married to a great transmission. I will own this car a very long time. One option I love is the TFT gauges..... and the feel of the seats. Excellent ! you speak my tongue... btw an acquaintance of mine (not a friend) works in a car service place and he said he hates Kia's because they don't generate merely any income for him. No major problems, faults, breakdowns, nothing happens to them, owners ask for just a ridiculous oil change and so. Instead the german luxory brands are regular visitors with broken parts, electricity issues, engine breakdowns... interesting.

froochie123 I couldn't agree with you more. I am in my 40's now and I want the best bang for my buck. I have owned a Mercedes, my friends all own either a Lexus or a BMW. My wife and I bought a new car last month and I was looking at the Mercedes C Class. After test driving the Mercedes I decided to go look at a Kia Cadenza just for shits and giggles. I have to say that we was impressed. The fully loaded Cadenza has way more optioins, drove better, more room on the inside, the NAV screen is bigger plus Kia offered a 10 yr / 100,000 mile warranty. We ended up buying the KIA because we felt we got more car for the money, plus as you stated they are up and coming. Plus the warranty was a nice added bonus. For just over $30k I feel we got the best bang for our bucks.

I have been driven (by my father) in the most luxurious cars on earth. Not that he was rich, but because of his profession (company chauffeur). I know the difference with cheap cars and the difference is huge. Then, as a child, I resolved to buy one of these luxury cars of my own, one day. If not new, then second hand. Then, I started to earn my own money and saw the value of it and that it is not that simple to maintain a luxury car. Buying is not the problem, certainly not second hand, but maintaining it (fuel, garage bills, tyres, Insurance, road tax etc). Choices, choices.... In fact I was so naive, I thought an expensive car would never break and never wear, because they were so well made. Yeah, right... So, now I drive a Mitsubishi Mirage and you know what? Suddenly all that luxury seems very superficial. In the end, a car is a machine that brings you where you want, warm or cool, dry and reliably. Small is handy, economical, nimble. I like that. I feel sorry for people burning so much money in depreciation and fuel and all that. Probably they have to work hard to earn all that money to burn. And what does that bring? Nothing but status. The hell with status. I really do not care about status, fashion and the like. That is for narrow minded people who are focused on externals and trinkets. Am I cheap or just rational? haha. No, not for me this kind of car. I know better ways to spend money.

The thing about this car is that, yeah, it looks good in and out, but that's only because Kia "borrowed" most of what it is from real luxury brands. That gear shifter is right out of a BMW, the electric seat adjusters is pure Mercedes, and the list extends to nearly every other part of the car. This is why Kia and Hyundai can't make their own luxury brand: because no one wants a copy.

Most cars in their class look similar to one another. For instance many new mid size sedans like Mazda 6 and the new infinity q50 look very similar in the rear to the previous Hyundai sonata model. I think Kia cars (higher trims) are unique thanks to Peter Schreier and unlike nearly all other cars, most kia models look good from any angle and not just the front or the back
@elisicamost5959
@elisicamost5959 10 жыл бұрын
Just because it's a copy does not make it any less good. And by the way, gear shifter and electric seat adjustments may look the same but is it the same motor? same bolts? I don't think so.... The car has a million parts. They are not all copied. So what are you trying to do here? Are you trying to bring down Hyundai by saying it copied everything and it sucks because it cannot come up with anything new?

If Hyundai/Kia was smart, it would create a luxury brand just as Honda, Toyota, and Nissan did with Acura, Lexus, and Infiniti, respectively. No way they will sell a lot of these, as the majority of luxury car buyers are status-conscious and would not spend $65K on a car from a company that they also know makes the Soul or Forte.
@sksinha1
@sksinha1 10 жыл бұрын
...not saying the K900 or the Equus aren't great cars or are not worth the money, but they should have created luxury brands and then sell their luxury models under those brands.

Mazda is a prime example. They tried to build higher-end luxury models in the 90s and early '00s, but they did not sell well and did not have the same reputation as the other luxury models. Now they don't build any high-end luxury cars.
@elisicamost5959
@elisicamost5959 10 жыл бұрын
1st of all, they are already smart because they are doing pretty good at selling compact and medium size cars. 2nd, they don't need to create a luxury brand for many reasons, one being they are already doing pretty well... 3rd, for every status-conscious buyer that will avoid this car, they will find a buyer that does not care about the badge.
@sksinha1
@sksinha1 10 жыл бұрын
***** I never said they are not smart because they are not doing at selling compact and medium size cars. I said if they are smart, they would create a luxury division to market and sell their high-end luxury cars under. This has worked very well for Acura, Lexus, and Infiniti. You are wrong about being able to find a buyer who does care about the badge for every status-conscious buyer who will avoid this car. High-end luxury car buyers who care about the badge make up the majority of these types of buyers, so your one-for-one theory doesn't fit. Again, not saying the Hyundai Equus and Kia K900 are not awesome cars. Only saying these companies would be smarter to create separate luxury divisions to sell them under. History has shown that companies that try and sell their high-end luxury card under the same brand name as their lower-end cars do not succeed in selling those types of cars.

Kia hats off for being extremely ballsy and putting a V8 engine in this car when other car companies a ditching them!!! Now everyone that is saying "65k? no way!" BUT Kia is target luxury BUYERS, and if you're looking for luxury car, the LAST time you look at is the price tags.... you don't care, you are expecting top notch high end features and functionality, and that what this car gives you in compared to its main competition. Luxury buyers look at TODAYS tech so they know its expensive, not old used tech, like in audis or acuras. YUCK

Unfortunately they did, early Lexus models weren't much to brag about in terms of exterior & interior design. Those 1st generation LS/GS/ES models really didn't offer much in terms of luxury in my opinion except an exceptionally reliable engine & tranny. The interior improvements & tech in their models now are what helped drive those prices up.

I think KIA's made a big mistake like what Hyundai did... They did not create a separate brand for their luxury devision. Regardless of how luxurious and nice this car may be, people really do not want to drive a "kia" or "Hyundai" over an established brand like Lexus. Sure this is kind of a pretentious thought, but personally I'd get a Lexus LS or even GS over the Genesis, Equus, and K900.

chad haire These faux-luxury brands only exist in the US because manufacturers believe that only Americans are stupid enough to fall for it. Cars sold in the US under the "Acura" brand are sold elsewhere with a Honda badge and US Infiniti models sold with the Nissan badge. Lexus is the exception - though they have a much smaller presence outside the US. Lexus makes money because they charge more for their cars than Hyundai does. Sales of the Genesis haven't suffered for lack of an imaginary "luxury brand". The Genesis platform was so successful that is spawned two corporate cousins... the Hyundai Equus and Kia K900.

I find it interesting reading the comments on this video. As always people jump to the conclusion without actually driving or even seeing the car in person. Comments like "Kia? No way" are just signs of ignorance. As a person that loves cars and previous owner of a BMW 750li, Mercedes S550 and Porsche C4S, I can tell you that I understand build quality. However, in today's economy I look closer to value and less on status. $60k for ANY car that has this level of tech, luxury and performance is a good deal when you compare it to overprice Lexus, BMW and Benz. A year ago I was in the market for a new car. I looked at all of the Japanese sport sedans, I looked at pre-owned german sedans as well as Ford and Chevrolet. After doing a ton of research I came to the conclusion that my best value for the money was a Kia Optima SX-T. After owning the car for a year now, I can tell you its one of the best cars I have owned and enjoy driving it every day and paying my low monthly payment every month. Keep an open mind folks, the market is getting bigger and there are more options than ever.

I completely agree. A year ago I was in the market for a new car. As everybody looked at benzes, bmw, Cadillac cts but after I test drove and research the optima sxl I've never looked back. Tons of features, good power, great ride and looks way better than competition. Very happy with my purchase.

Sure funny how brand perception is still around these days , people would put this car on a pedestal and pay double if it had a BMW badge. I'm just waiting until the day comes when both Kia and Hyundai will be touted as good if not better than the Japanese , by the masses. The day will come sooner than later. I still remember how back in the day the Japanese dominated the electronic market , now it's the Koreans.

The value of these cars plummet, i recently found a 2015 fully loaded k900 with 4k miles for 25k below msrp. that means you can get this luxury for mid to high 40's if you buy used.

Today, 75% of the gadgets that come standard on a luxury sedan can be added as options in cheap compact sedans... Nowadays, the line between fully-loaded midsize sedan and luxury sedan is very slim. I'm not talking about AMG and super-duper turbo stuff. Back in the days when cars had 1% electronics in them, it made sense to have a luxury brand that loads their cars with GPS and VSC. Nowadays, what is the point of Hyundai or Kia creating a separate luxury brand? Think about Honda Civics VS Acura CSX, what is the difference? There is a difference but it is verry small. It might have helped selling millions of cars in the 90's and 2000's but is it still the case in 2014?

Jeremy Lai Wai Kit When you tell someone that you drive a KIA K900 or as the call it Quoris in my country, theres a very high chance that people wouldnt know the difference between this and the kia cerato or a kia Ce'ed, even if you explain how its as good as an E class and even better in someways people would still say its a KIA, But if it was a sub brand, you could explain it to them that its a new luxury brand and get away with owning a KIA. Im sure the guys over at kia have thought about this and probably thought it was better to stick to improving kias image.

Lexus GS doesn't look nearly as exciting as this Kia (can't believe I'm saying this). GS is just not the right car to compare it with. Probably the LS even though that's a step above in class, but that's just what I'd compare the K900 to. There's no rear seat goodies in the GS, and it's missing a lot of the features you can get on this K900.

***** Here's the thing...many rich folks, particularly those who were born into it, don't buy new Benz' and BWMs all the time. They buy a car and will keep it/drive it for 8-10 years. Many will buy Hondas and, yes, Kias because they put their money in other, profitable ventures. They realize cars are an expense. For those who have businesses, they may indeed get a Benz or BMW, as they can expense the hell out of them on their taxes. But really rich folks aren't impressed with cars like they used to. They're more impressed by the schools their kids go to (from pre-school on), the homes and neighborhoods they live in, the country club they belong to, etc. Anyone can buy a $100,000 car, if they live in a shock or the car itself. Harder for someone to live in the 'right' neighborhood, be in the 'right club' and go to the 'right' schools.

I like cars, always have. But I'm not a brand snob. I don't envy people for what they have or what they make, and I don't care at all what people think of me. I only revere and worship God the Father, God the Son-the Lord Jesus Christ, and God the Holy Spirit. And I do care what They think of me and the relationship that we have. So, now that you know where I'm coming from, I must say that this car is exactly what I would buy for a luxury sedan, if I had money. I like everything about it, including the looks. And I wouldn't have to feel guilty for over-indulging myself. I could do a lot of good for folks with the 40-50k I'd save over a comparable Merc or Bimmer.

You need to expand your horizons further and stop being such an ignorant. The number one luxury car sold in north America has been Lexus for the last 20 years. USA itself has more population than the majority of the Europe all together. Lexus is sold in middle east far more than other cars, and it dominates the Asian market. The majority of Europe is in financial crisis and families can't afford owning multiple cars, so Lexus has focused its market on rich areas. Do yourself a favor and use Google to educate yourself.

The first time I saw the K900 I was dazzled by the headlights, now not so much. The car has all the luxury you could ask for, but I'm not sure any of the high priced, high end cars are worth it anymore. Especially when it comes to repairs, which most people don't think about when buying. For example, one (1) shock absorber on a Mercedes E class with air suspension went bad, to replace one leaking shock tower strut was $1.195.00 + about $300 - 400 dollars labor to install it, so you're looking at about $1,500 for ONE shock replacement, which in and of itself a shock!

HYUNDAI's AND KIA's ARE CRAPPY CARS! I'm a technician at a Hyundai dealer in New Jersey and I can tell you guys from personal experience that Hyundai's and Kia's (Hyundai owns Kia) are both poorly made cars. To save money, Hyundai and Kia use cheap metal that rust almost immediately off the showroom floor. The rims that Hyundail and Kia use are made out of cheap, soft aluminum that bends on even the smallest of pot holes. The engines are not very well tuned from the factory and are blowing up all over the place. I can not tell you how many engines I've had to replace in the last year. They also have at least three recalls a month over the dumbest things. And finally the interior may look nice but behind the dashboard are cheap components that I'm always having to replace.

I know many people who have both Hyundais and Kias and they have experienced none of the issues you describe. According to the NHTSA, they have received 40 complaints about rust in Hyundai vehicles... well below the industry average. While I'm sure that individual cars can have issues, the idea that this is a widespread issue simply isn't borne out by the facts. My wife's Hyundai is coming up on ten years old and approaching 200,000 miles and in spite of the worst that New England winters can throw at this car, it is free of rot. As for Hyundai engines "blowing up all over the place"... don't be ridiculous.

You're definitely not a qualified Hyundai/Kia technician. Judging by analyzing multiple criteria, such as your subscriptions, grammar, and the lack of knowledge about Hyundai Corp in general I'd say you are more like a teenage male around 13-19. Metal is the least of the problems in hyundai, they were one of the biggest shipbuilders (still is, building Containerships, Drillships, LNG Carriers, Warships) in the world, and if the engineering department knows one thing there, its anti corrosion methods (saltwater being one of the worst things to expose to metal in nature)

Greg35RS is a fraud. He posted the exact same bullshit on my car test web page. I also noted this clown sent the e-mail at Monday 9am in the morning when he should have been at work at the dealer, not sitting home writing BS emails.

well you certainly haven't worked on an American car ahve you greg?? have you owned a lincoln, cadillac or even a chevy? cost-cutting initiatives are the key proponents of American car companies and it shows. I can't own them, I'd rather own a kia than a chevy or caddy.

It's not about impressing others with "lookie over here, this is my Benz!" It's about pleasing yourself and saving money which is really smarter! You are making good money and SAVING said money. I mean, if I could afford a luxury car AND save tens of thousands of dollars, who cares what the other luxury car drivers think of what I am ENJOYING at that moment? I was checking out a friend's 2014 KIA Forte SX Hatchback in medium gray metallic loaded. I was impressed! The engine rev, the acoustics, the interior design. He said to me..... "but it's a KIA" And I said "who cares? this is HOT" Ehhh he isn't even 30 yet. He doesn't have a clue.......

I agree. I picked one up couple months ago , white on white, vip, v8 20k miles for 30k. gave me 7k for my trade in. happy with the purchase. great car. I would never pay 60k for it. at 30k it's a bargain

Great review..I went from an SUV to a Kia Cadenza with every last feature I wanted and I love it. Finally got a car that has everything I need without breaking the bank. You're right if the badges were removed and someone got in this vehicle they wouldn't know what brand it would be. People are still stuck on the hype not that these premium names we know are overrated...just overpriced.
