Great Vlog, thanks for taking the time! Moab is surreal, I'm dying to go back! And here's a shout-out to all the Moms worried about someone parking a motorcycle on the roadside out in the middle of absolutely nowhere (see the open-range cattle?!?): Everything looks dangerous from your perch on the couch.

Utah clay muds up quick and thick. My son and I got caught in a downpour once near Spanish Fork. We waited it out, and then got going as soon as it cleared. He was on a 1980 XR80, and couldn't keep it upright. I had brought a cable lock, so we tethered his bike to a tree in a thicket just off the road, and we half pushed, half rode ten miles out on my 1981 XL185S. We came back after it had dried to get his bike.

In Moab,Utah,If you add a little Rain water,you get red mud,some people say if you add some pebbles then you can call it gravel,but any day in Moab up on two wheels,whether powered or peddle or just hiking,Is better than any other day!!!!

Southern Utah has been unusually rainy since my March Moab 2015 trip. It is supposed to rain again down there this June 10-11, I got my Super Tenere all set now with skid plate, TKC80 tires, Handle bar riser, plus lowered it down 1/2 inch. and crash bars. LOOKS cool but still want a KTM 690 next year. LOL

I've made 5 trips up Long Canyon, the first in 1994 (last one on a 690R in 2012). They've really tamed the steep section (for the SUVs). Used to be 3' boulders and 2' deep sand after a big rain. I've seen the mud over a foot deep on the west end just before getting on the pavement. UGLY! Keep Riding, at our age it just takes a little longer.

+tmathiason1238 I'd like to go again, including White Rim, before winter if I can find a posse to do it with.

I didn't say anything, but I was finished with the mud about half way to the paved road after we got on top of the mesa. :-) I was temped to let some air out of the tires, but with no visible rim locks its better to slip and slid a bit than to spin a tire especially with the horsepower and torque of the 690, .

Looks like a great ride! We ride an lot of mud over here in KY and TN. I have found the most important thing to do is lower the tire pressure. Night and day difference on my wr250r.
@telerover
@telerover 8 жыл бұрын
+Chris Weatherspoon That is good advice, and if we were able to complete the White Rim road, lower tire pressure would be handy in the river bottom, where it is sandy. However, the 690R does not have rim locks and there is a lot of slick rock on the ride with loads of traction, so Ron and I are wary about spinning the valve stem off.

Awful idea parking your bike in the middle of the road. Be courteous of other people on the road as it only takes one second and your bike is gone and you injured someone because you didn't want to get dirty.

Spectacular views. Thanks for posting. I'm thinking of getting a 690R; your videos have been extremely helpful. I have a Super Tenere and a DRZ400s stock. I hate the incredible weight of the Tenere off-road and hate the speed limitation of the DRZ on the freeways. The 690 seems to solve both problems. Is it comfortable cruising at 80-90 MPH on the freeway for an hour at a time?
@telerover
@telerover 9 жыл бұрын
The 690R weighs the same as our DRZ's but the CG is lower because of . The gas tank. Plus 2.5 times the hp.
@telerover

stopper90004 I didn't see your question about cruising at 80-90 MPH on the freeway. That's scary (for me). The stock gearing has a 15 tooth countershaft sprocket.. We changed to a 14T for trail riding, which spins the motor at 5000 RPM at 65 MPH and 6-8 MPH at idle. It was OK riding at speed for a half-hour between getting back on dirt roads. I went full out and hit 104 MPH at 8000 RPM redline, and it was still wanting to pull. It was stable, but the wind was trying to rip my visor off, as I was staying tucked. Ron and I both bought 16T sprockets that would be used for extended road trips. Getting a Seat Concepts seat would be your first mod, as your butt will be sore in a half-hour with the stock seat. I would love this engine in a flat track frame on the mile. Keep in mind that this bike comes with knobbies (in the USA anyway). If your goal is touring you'll want some 50/50 DS tires with the 16T sprocket.The knobbies buzz at 55 MPH. I personally will try and avoid anything with a center stripe and freeways are NOT under discussion, no where, no how. I've raced Daytona Speedway, but hate street riding. Buy an KTM1190 Adventure or something with huge dual disk Brembo brakes and fairings, but then you are back to your Tenere issue. With my dog we try to stay under 55 MPH. I think the 690R would be wonderful on the Trans America Trail for 24 days in a row, 200 miles/day. fyi, One of my visitors that showed up on a KTM 990 Adventure 10 days ago just got a 690R yesterday.

stopper90004 I have been following TeleRover reports over the past two months and enjoy them too. I just got back last month from Moab. We had like a 20 member Yamaha TW200 get together. Half stayed in Hotels downtown Moab and half stayed in primitive camp conditions north of Moab. Both groups had a great time. Many left with tired muscles or minor issues from the tough terrain and day in day out demands. I have many new thoughts about riding on difficult trails and dirt. First off, I have a Super Tenere too and thought a Super Tenere is just too heavy. Nice bike but more bike than needed. Probable obvious to most people prior to me saying that but I had some dreams about riding the Tenere on same trails and found out the shorter TW200 just more practical. So in saying that I have also considerd buying a 690Enduro, but since they are sold out the KTM dealer asked me to consider a Husky 350 street legal. He said since I want to use it mostly off road it would make sense for me.

Thanks for getting back to me. I hope you had a good time. Our plans were modified by the weather. For staying and playing around Moab, a KTM/Husky 350/500 street legal Enduro would be my choice (if you fell a lot) but if you need to put some major highway on the bike while getting to the trails (see my Monument Valley and Moki Dugway rides), then the 690R is very nice. One of my visitors just got a 690R from a dealer in Boulder that just started carrying KTM's (along with every Jap bike made - I can't stand going into those kind of dealerships). This 690R has opened new venues to me that in the past, as a strictly track, then trail rider, I would not have considered before.

I traded the Tenere in for a 690 at the weekend. It feels lighter than my DRZ400s! Nice and punchy on the freeway, and confidence inspiring in the twisties. Not as neck-snapping fast as I thought it might be. It is quite prone to vibration (much more so than the DRZ400), but I soon adapted and I bet there are ways to dampen the vibes with various after-market farkles/swaps. Any advice is welcome. I'm going to get radiator protection ASAP as I'm sure I'll still be dropping this bike once I get more adventurous and tackle more technical trails.

Love the video!! What are those Boxes on the back? Do you carry fuel in those? Where do you get them?
@telerover
@telerover 8 жыл бұрын
+Stack Smasher Look at some of my other videos on the KTM 690R setups and earlier rides. I don't want to be too specific, but those are traveler boxes for buying coffee from popular coffee chains. If you are a regular customer and ask nice, they'll give you one. Other places might charge you $7 for one. They have a mylar bag inside that you can stuff 1 gallon of fuel in it. Once you get from the motel to the trail on the highway, and burned off a gallon, then you can dump the gas in your tank to top it off. Then fold it up and strap it down or stuff it in your backpack, until you can find a trash bin (don't leave it in the wild, it will NOT decompose). Then you are ready to rip. This way you are not burdened bay hard plastic gas cans on your whole ride.

Not so much in the fall, but we get afternoon scattered thunder clouds that come and go. The best plan is to get riding by 8 am (40 degF) and be back to the mote by 2 PM. You would just wear light enduro clothing or MX gear with a thin waterproof jacket tied to your rack or in your Camelback, When it rains in the Rockies, you will still have good traction, and it dries out real fast. Moab's slick rock has good traction (see my latest fins-n-things and long canyon video). The problem in the spring, when this ride occurred, it had snowed at night for several days and it did not get a chance to dry out.

+Phil, We were concentrating too much to take a nap. It could have been more exciting for the viewers, but that means we would have had more trouble than we did. The long section of road, normally goes by quickly as a way to get to the White Rim road, then we start the fun. Unfortunately the weather came in and snowed and we never got to our main ride which we had planned on since last year. Look at my other videos. I subscribed to your channel (subscribe to mine please) since you are showing us new places to ride. Where are you from? It looks like you are visiting many places.
