The 2015 Lexus IS 250 and IS 350 luxury sport sedans are nothing if not head-turners. Cars in this segment tend to err on the conservative side when it comes to styling, but the current IS clearly has a strong personality. There's more to it than the latest fashion, though; the IS is also a fully capable competitor on the road, and it's roomier and more luxurious than ever. Here are five reasons why the 2015 Lexus IS is one to watch.
Bold Looks
The Lexus design team was determined to give the IS some extra spice, and we'd say mission accomplished. The unique Lexus spindle grille gives the IS a head-turning presence, while the streamlined, wraparound taillight style is another Lexus original. We also admire the rakish character line that starts at the taillights and flows down to the doorsills in a graceful arc. Lexus totally reinvented the IS for the current generation, and the styling drives that message home with authority.
Two V6 Engines
Our IS 250 test car features a 2.5-liter V6 engine that generates 204 horsepower. That may not sound like a lot, but it's adequate in the real world. Compared to the popular 4-cylinder Acura TSX, for example, the IS 250 gives you more low-end punch. And it sounds better, too. If quickness matters, though, take a look at the IS 350, which upgrades to a 3.5-liter V6 rated at a whopping 306 hp. Ten years ago, the Ford Mustang GT put out six fewer horses with its big V8. The IS 350 can really move.
Overhauled Interior
The Germans have been interior-design leaders for years, but the current IS gives them a serious run for their money. The dashboard oozes upscale character, with supple, high-quality materials everywhere you look. The beautiful central widescreen display comes standard on every IS, and its resolution rivals that of your smartphone. Nothing about this cabin screams entry-level luxury; it's the genuine article. Plus, the perfectly contoured front seats are to die for. If there are better seats in the automotive world, chances are they have Porsche crests on the leather.
Bigger Back Seat
The cramped rear quarters of the previous IS weren't much fun unless you were a kid. But the current IS 250 and IS 350 have enough room in back for 6-footers to ride in comfort. That could be the clincher if you're looking to downsize from a midsize luxury car. The IS still drives like a compact sport sedan, but there's no compromise in passenger space. It begs the question: Why would you need anything more?
A True Sport Sedan
The BMW 3 Series used to be the undisputed champ for driving pleasure, but these days, it isn't. Just as the Bimmer was going soft, the IS hit the gym hard, and the result is easily Lexus' sportiest sedan ever. Featuring stellar steering, confident body control and a tossable feel, the IS is a blast on winding roads, especially if you opt for the F Sport package with its sport-tuned suspension and other racy modifications.
