2015 Lexus LX 570 takes on the grueling IKE Guantlet towing review

( www.TFLtruck.com ) The 2015 Lexus LX 570 is an off-road luxury SUV that can also tow. It has the big 5.7L V8 with 383 horsepower and 403 lb-ft of torque. It's the engine also used in the Toyota Tundra, but it makes two horsepower and lb-ft of torque more in the Lexus. But how well can it tow? We decided to find out by taking it up the Ike Gauntlet?
The Ike Gauntlet is a timed run up one of America's steepest highways from 9,000 feet above sea level to the top of the mountain at entrance to the Eisenhower Tunnel in Colorado.

Impressive. Made IN Japan by their best assembly crew just as the LFA & LC500. You pay more up front but the decades payback is having no headaches. Worth it. I bought Toyota & now have two Lexus vehicles and I know every morning I'll go out regardless of weather it'll start. On the first try. All mine have lasted 300k+ miles and I see them running around town now & then. Lol. Solid vehicles.

I know its kinda late with this reply but...This V8 is rated less for towing because IT IS ALWAYS IN 4-wheel drive. There is always a torque split front to rear. If you are towing, the weight is more on the rear wheels. If the front tires lose traction because of power, it will just apply the brakes to the front wheels. Really not any benefit but its not as much a tow vehicle as it is an off-road. And off-road it will excel better than any $90k SUV. Then when you are in that price range, you might wonder if anything else is a 1 million mile spec vehicle. That's right. Since 1998 the Land Cruiser has been a 1 million mile spec vehicle. That means it is intended to do 1 million miles before a major drive-train overhaul. Of course, you'll try to break it before then.

My understanding of Toyota's (Lexus) view on this vehicle (and the LC) is 25 years of no major driveline component failure. Now that could certainly translate to 1MM miles. They can these Japanese built V-8's million mile engines (with due maintenance) because of how tedious their build process is. This is not the same V8 as Sequoia, etc. They don't pour the block casting, it's pumped or flowed from the bottom of the cast mold for less chance of air bubbles and then everyone is MRI'ed to make sure there are no voids. Every component is built and installed to this level of care which is how they get the longevity from these vehicles.

so true I have owned this engine in 3 vehicles two tundras and a LC200 Lc loosed a little in all wheel drive but it feels and sounds different than in my tundra. There is a differe drive ratio aswell. Strange thing is my LC 200 is heavier than both tundras all wheel drive and still gets better mpg

This thing tows every bit of 8500lbs, the 2010 was rated for 8500 but they switched to a more conservative way of rating it due to air suspension.

This is true on the suspension weight ratings, however, one point of clarification is that the AHC suspension is not an air suspension, it is hydraulic. Not trying to be a "know it all kinda guy", just mentioning because it is a much more robust system than air and functions and lasts much much better. That said, nothing wrong with good old coil springs that will last and have basically no maintenance. You can delete this system and go to coils or buy the Land Cruiser instead.

Great review. This or the Land Cruiser will most likely be our next vehicle. We will most likely tow a 5,000lb camper on the east coast. Roman, we have similar taste in vehicles, for sure.

you'd get around 7 - 8 mpg overall with a trailer of that size and weight with the 5.7 liter Toyota engine. Given the size of the gas tank of either LX570 or Land Cruiser, you'd be stopping for gas every 150 miles or 2 hours of highway driving. For that reason, I don't tow with my Land Cruiser.

+The Fast Lane Truck I noticed the same thing with our 2010 V6 escape. When we towed a 6x12 uhaul trailer to North Carolina and back from Ohio, I was running torque pro on my tablet on the dash with an ODB II bluetooth reader. One of the things I had running was a graph with absolute throttle position. I'd keep my foot steady, and we'd start up an incline, and suddenly the graph would show the throttle opening almost all the way, so that if I put my foot down, nothing happened. I think it's a "feature" of DBW to be honest. Is there a way you can contact Ford/Toyota and get any clarification on that? Also any chance you can do any Ike Gauntlet with smaller SUVs? Like the escape or Equinox? Maybe on TFLCars, but it would be nice to see.

Would you consider testing both a newer (2008-2015) LX 570 and finding an older (2003-2007) LX 470 and comparing new vs old. There is such a huge following with these vehicles, especially the older ones (100's and older) that to hear a respected review from yourselves could be interesting, entertaining, and educational. Just a thought from a fan.

LX470 is literally a classic I use to have one now I have a LX570 (2015) and I miss the LX470 so much still. It was giving some problems... probably cause it had around 500,000 miles no joke.

Can anybody tell me if the oil pressure gage on this cars shows the psi of oil correctly, I bought an 2008 white 100000 miles and I’m not shore if the oil pressure gage shows correctly, I put 5w30 oil in the engine in a est est Europe climate.

Numbers are different because it isn't the same engine as the tundra. Engine blocks flow into the molds from below to keep air bubbles out. They're also MRI 'd to identify and prevent any voids in the block from making it into production. Built in a special land cruiser lx570 only plant. Engineered and built for no major issues for at least 25 years. Repeat, this is not a tundra engine, it's even higher grade.

It’s the exact same engine as the Tundra. Numbers are barely different because Lexus wants its luxury customers to run premium, which gives +2HP and +2TQ.

@danturbo316 I'm not sure why it's rated at 7000 pounds, in Australia it's rated at 3500kg, which is 7716 pounds. I'm sure they could rate it much higher if they wanted to.

Different laws regarding towing. Also they most likely used the J2807 tow standard for it here in the states. Vehicles in europe get WAY higher ratings than here in the US.

I'm assuming this is a 6 speed? Surprised lexus didn't do direct injection or 8 speed to set it apart from the tundra given the price point. I'm guessing the tow rating isn't as high as suburbans like others have commented due to the suspension. Independent vs solid axel. Leaf springs vs adjustable air ride tuned for smoothness.

Aaron Stokes i have the 6 speed and the wifey has the newer 8 speed. The 8 speed feels like its hunting for the right gear more and that the 6 speed is almost always at the right gear

The Fast Lane Truck Why is the fast lane truck making excuses for not taking an offroad vehicle, offroad? What's your malfunction? You take the mall crawler Land Rover Discovery Sport, which you say will never go offroad, offroad. But what? The Lexus is too fragile? Yes, lets do get serious. Why can you take a Range Rover offroad and you can't do it with the Lexus? Its the same segment. People don't buy the Lexus because its a towing machine, it isn't, in the USA they buy pickups for towing, but they buy it because (1) they have the cash, or can sign the lease. (2) because they know it will get them though anything. Case in point: A relative of mine has an older version of this SUV. Guess which vehicle goes out for supplies when the ice storms come and feet of snow fall? right the Lexus. Which vehicle is taken on ski trips when the weather is questionable? The Lexus. Which vehicle is taken offroad and fords moderate streams when we go to the river? The Lexus. NOTE: Not the pickup, the Lexus does these things. The pickup tows things. It appears that you test cars completely backwards. When you do test them off road its normally half ass. A muddy field isn't an offroad test ie: your "test" of the GX460. I could do that test in my minivan. Why not load up the pickups you test with half their GVWR and then pull it up Ike at half throttle? It would defeat the point of the test, right? That is what you are doing with the lexus. You tend to test the Rovers better, why can't we get that kind of test in its direct competitor?

But it also has the interior from a matchbox car. I really tried to like the Sequoia but god damn that interior is atrocious. My 2014 F150 interior made the 2021 Sequoia interior look terrible.

The Sequoia is an honest truck. Built for heavy duty use and rambunctious families. That interior is simple but highly functional, extremely durable...and COMFORTABLE. That's the theme with the entire vehicle, in fact. When I want luxury pampering, I take my Lexus!

@@tbamagic Yeah my F150 interior was in fantastic shape with two kids. It doesnt have to be Playskool to be durable and functional. You also shouldnt have to pay 60k for a truck with an interior like that, even Platinum trims were pretty bad. Nice flex on the lexus though. My F150 was as nice as my GX460 inside. Not as nice as my LX570 but the LX570 is also 5 years newer and cost 2.5x what I paid for my F150 when it was new. I would hope it would be nicer.

The inside materials are remind me of a charter jet. Its basically the closest you can get to being in a private plane on the road, without getting much attention. I really think its a good value, i have to relocate soon and will use it tow a few things. "It feels expensive because it is expensive". Its the best 100k i spent in april or may. The fuel tank is small though and if you use a driver they have to change DVDs for you when you are in the back.

Lexus's are very nice vehicles but 90,000 for that truck, i couldn't do it. i have been in one before and you are manely paying for the rear entertainment which you will not use that much even if you have kids (iPads, and tablets). a lot of hard plastics is seen. and easy to scratch surfaces. u can by a BMW or Mercedes, hell even an Audi. Lexus only set the prices like that because they can, not because it is worth that price.
