my Brother and I was able to removed a shorted capacitor behind a ram slot causing the motherboard to just have loud fan spin.. the same size like what you've found, using only DCPS and sense of touch.. initially, we injected 1.0V 1.0A on ram power rail (coil) and we get 0.2V 1.0A reflected.. so we knew there was something shorted on the ram power rail.. we increased the amps until we felt something on the board is heating and at 6A (6W), a tiny capacitor showed itself.. so it is possible.. however, it wont be as fast as how you've done it with a thermal cam..

Just goes to show you - visual inspection can't always be trusted. Those other components looked burned out - but the actual bad cap looked very good !! To bad those heat cameras are so expensive !!

I would love to know too please. I can only assume it has to do with all the diodes on the circuit which will give a reading one way but not the other and cannot be reversed in the circuit...

Thermal cam is one way. Using old fingers that can burn easily is another way and yet one more way is good old benzine (lighter fuel)
