The 2015 Scion FRS (similar to the Subaru BRZ) is a two door RWD coupe with a 2.0L boxer 4 cylinder producing 200 HP. It features a Torsen limited slip differential, a sport tuned suspension, and 215/45 R17 summer performance tires. It's a light weight, purpose built vehicle weighing in just over 2,800 lbs with the automatic transmission. This video will take a look at the exterior, engine and drivetrain, wheels, tires, suspension, interior, features, as well as a quick test drive and summary of the fuel economy and performance.

Since the time I posted my comment, my oppinion on the car has changed, for the price of a new one or even a lightly used one you could find a Vette Z06 nicely depreciated or even an S2000 or Nissan 3XX Z Personally, I'd get a Lotus Elise from about 2006 or so, for the price of a new one (if you're lucky to find such a good deal, which i have seen before).

In reply to Andy, it's kinda silly to call them Prius tires. They're optional performance tires for the Prius in the Japanese market, to my knowledge. They're still summer tires.... And besides, how hard is it to change tires?

Andy Skeptic I've had an opportunity to run a GT86 on Michelin Pilot Super Sport's for a week and if anything, they made the car better and still playable, prone to oversteer. So get off your "high power" horse, this car is loads of fun in any form.

Wrong, besides my genies, I own a Datsun 510 (110 hp), and I have had an 1979 alfa gtv. I have driven under powered cars lots and have loved them. But the gt86 is just not those cars. It's less then the sum of its parts.

I think this is the perfect sports car for a first time sports car owner. 80% of people think they are an above average driver. At least 30% of them are wrong. I don't believe I am a better driver than anyone else but I would like to be. I have always wanted a sports car and I am getting one that I can LEARN to drive on I think is a great step for me. Sadly there are allot of inflated egos here that don't get it.

Auto or manual. This car will always be your new-found limb once you get behind the wheel. Just like the gt-r..you really can't complain even though you're driving semi-auto. Drop the ego and realize you're driving a well made machine!

Love my FR-S... Had it 5 years now, and only about 30K on the odometer. Not very powerful, but fun as hell. It's exactly as fast as I want... any faster and I would be in trouble! The cupholders are shite, though. Also, the back seat is a joke. Good thing I never need to have someone sitting there. Manual transmission, of course. Would recommend to anyone who doesn't mind being outrun by V6 SUVs.

I tested the automatic FRS and when I put it into sport mode, the throttle response was so instantaneous, I was bucking back n forth in traffic.

Meh, the automatic gearbox on the FR-S/BRZ (which by the way is derived from the Lexus IS gearbox) is a little better than what people make it out to be. I drove both the manual and automatic extensively and while the manual is obviously the more exciting choice, the automatic does the job well enough and fits the need for a lot of drivers especially in the US who perhaps experience heavy traffic. If you're nailing it in manual mode and keeping the revs up high, then the gearbox will shift pretty quickly up or down. Also, unlike some autos with manual modes, it won't automatically make you upshift each time you reach the rev limiter which is cool. If you aren't doing any spirited driving, I would suggest to leave it in automatic mode either in normal or Sport mode as the ECU does a good job in managing what gear you should be in relative to throttle. I personally still found the automatic model to be just as tail happy, folks you just have to rev the engine to 7400.

Hakeem Kazak Automatic 86 is slower than a chrysler pacifica, so it's a shitty transmission designed for econobox... manual is the only way...

KatyCat and the AE86 is slower than either, what’s your point? You want straight line speed go get a goddamn Nissan fairlady or Chevy SS etc, leave this car to the real drivers who can appreciate the design goals and heritage.

@@Catalina._ if you want cheap muscle go with a 4.6 cougar or a hemi , I've driven light cars and really appreciate the driving feel. I would really like to buy an Frs if I get a good deal but local dealers and sales people all want their 100k a year so that's probably not going to happen . I will have to save my own money and buy one, realistically I may go for a cheaper car like a mustang 3.8 manual, pt cruiser Gt, or the cars I mentioned above . 😅 Just recently I saw a Classic Pontiac Lemans with the original 400ci and a purple paint job, nothing goofy @5k . The Buick Skylark can be had @3 in running condition . 😉

Just go with the transmission you want. I'd go for a manual, but the automatic is fine.

Awesome really in-depth review. You don't need excessive power to have a quick, well handling car. Never forget power to weight ratio and the fact that this car only weighs roughly 2,750 lbs, and was built for the twisties. Don't get me wrong, I agree it's slightly power-lacking but people tend to blow it out of proportion. The FR-S is a super entertaining car to drive...especially with a turbo!

In defense of this automatic: Some people can't really use a manual as a daily driver, because of where they live (they have to deal with heavy stop-start traffic on a daily basis, or they live somewhere with a lot of hilly stoplights, etc.); and for those people, the options are kind of limited. I absolutely, completely agree that the auto version of this car isn't as good as the manual, but it is just about the sportiest torque-converter automatic money can buy: it rev-matches, it shifts crisply, it's predictable and obedient, and it has wheel-mounted paddles. And at the BRZ's price range, literally the only sports car you can buy with a dual-clutch gearbox is the VW GTI; which is bigger, less sporty, front-wheel drive, and (more ominously) has undefeatable stability control. Additionally: all the gripes of the auto BRZ essentially boil down to the fact that its lack of power becomes more obvious with the taller-geared auto. And all of these complaints can be addressed in the same way all other complaints about the BRZ can be addressed in general: by adding more power. If you turbocharge an automatic '86, the slight lag the transmission has is almost exactly negated by the eliminated turbo lag from not having to lift off to shift gears (keep in mind: turbo cars are often as fast or faster with an auto or dual-clutch than with a manual, because of this. The Buick Grand National for example, became SLOWER when you swapped out the slushbox for a proper manual, because the turbo lag was horrifyingly bad in that car).

+Aleksei Carrion You make a good point, but really anyone who knows how to drive properly won't care about the traffic. I drive a manual, i've always driven a manual, I've never driven anything but a manual, and I'm pretty used to it I don't even think about shifting gears, even in heavy traffic. A lot of times I'm even thinking of schoolwork as I drive or whatever is going through my mind and heavy traffic does not make me wish I had an automatic one single bit.

After having manuals my whole life. I am in search for an auto. The convenience of an manual is so sweet for me. I wouldn't mind an auto in any car at this point.

Im 5'8", when I get in my friend's scion I take my shoes off and let him slide the seat all the way back. The under side of the seat has a really plush leatherette material so it's not unpleasant.

My parents recently got one of the RS 1.0 FR-S's and my mom wanted an auto so that what we got. For the most part, the transmission will downshift and blip the throttle quickly and upshot quick too. Although there are some times (like you were having) where it feels clunky and not smooth at all

We all wumbo I believe I saw in the BRZ development video here on youtube that they designed the auto to feel more like a manual transmission by means of locking up the torque converter at lower RPMs in order to give the feeling of a direct connection similar to that of a manual so that when you are more aggressive with the throttle the car feels more jerky. /watch?v=cQ0sDiL87eE

Thank the Toyota gods that this didn't have a CVT! The automatic while not as engaging as a wet dual clutch is extremely reliable. This car will last 200,000 miles plus with moderate spirited driving.

David Ha even if it is, boxer engines love turbos, can just find a cheap wrx and rip the turbo and ecu out and shove it in the frs 👌🏼

First of all, I love your videos. I learn something new every time I watch one. That said, I would like to share that my 6'3" coworker can fit in the rear passenger side seat with his knees straddling the back of the front passenger seat with my 5'2" coworker seated in the front. We carpool about once a month together for job training seminars and so far so good. Plus, now that my daughter is no longer in a booster seat she can fit her feet underneath the seat quite nicely, whereas before she was slightly elevated in her booster and her feet would not reach the floor. I'm 6'2" and have had three other grown adults in my BRZ without issues. It's tight but not impossible. However, I would not recommend these cars to a family with child(ren) in a rear facing seat.

Heared the Auto returns good fuel economy.... Other nice thing is this engine has standard port fuel injection with direct fuel injection as well. And I wonder what system works at what RPM and idle???

Was a good review until he started slating the auto transmission so badly, he's obviously very bias/elitist towards manuals. It is an excellent automatic compared to most others ive driven, I drove the manual too, but opted for the auto due to a wrist injury, and heavy traffic. I still smile everytime i drive it.

+Jay Cee It has less aggressive gearing, less acceleration. There's data to back that up - it's fun, but for less money the manual is faster, which I found to be more fun.

I would recommend simply buying the manual. I'm sure you read the comments above saying the automatic transmission is equal to or even better than a manual trans....that is a load of BS. With a manual you can achieve a 0-60 time in 6.1 seconds and in the auto it skyrockets to 7.3. This data is clear evidence as to why the manual transmission is the better one if you are buying this car for the enjoyment, and not to share with your wife that doesn't drive a manual. In conclusion the auto version is nowhere near as fun as the manual and it loses performance benefits.

Whenever i ride in the back of my friends Fr-s when needed, I take off my shoes. You fit much more comfortably that way, so the back seats aren't totally useless. At least they exist at all. And I'm 5'9 so not exactly a short person either.

at 4.13 those are actually preset equalizers for those specific cars and will actually change the sound of the head unit dramatically.

There is definitely, without a doubt an issue with the programming on your transmission as tested in this video. There was a TSB on it. It looks like your transmission is in limp mode. My automatic 2015 FRS is an absolute blast to drive and even rev matches the down shifts. It is also a lot faster and smoother shifting than yours. It's a shame you got to review an FR-S with the shifting issue present. Mine will go into limp mode occasionally but it will be back to normal after cycling the car off and back on again. I still have yet to take it to the dealer to have the issue resolved.

Nicely done, very comprehensive. Always looks like you have some great driving roads in your area. I see some BRZs/FRSs on the road in my area, but fun curvy back roads are rare and generally in crap condition. Thus the finer points of a car with stellar handling and mediocre power would be largely wasted around here. Meanwhile, power is genuinely useful here, since many locals drive well below the speed limit and passing zones are short and sometimes sparse. So it's WRX for me. I think some defenders of the FRS/BRZ's lack of power aren't considering that not all regions have roads that let the twins shine. It's a shame; I admire the engineering.

I have an idea to modify the back seats to allow people to sit backwards with legs going into the trunk. similar to a tesla model s. it would use the back of the front seats as the back rest of the rear seats.

From this video, it sounds like the automatic transmission on this car spends a lot of time changing between two gears while the car is seemingly at a constant speed. This is most noticeable where the car seems to be on a long straight before the highway segment.

Really want this car, is it worth it? As he said if I bought it, it would be an automatic since I barely know stick and don't really feel like beating up a 20k car by stalling and just everyday life, I'd rather just smoothly transition into a automatic. Also I'm wondering about credit for a car like this. I'm just turning 19 and barely have any form of credit, would it be impossible for a person to get a car like this?

With a cosigner and a considerable down payment, yeah it's possible. Just be prepared for high insurance since you need full coverage when financing..

You can fit two women in the brz. I had one that was 5’ 1” in the front and one 5’ 5” behind her with no issues. The driver side backseat is more difficult to use. Or if your passengers are taller or average men the back seats do become pretty useless.

Holding down the button till VSC off appears doesn't turn stability control completely off. Do it then go drive the car in the rain. It will still try to straighten the car when you lift off or touch the brakes at or near full lock at higher speeds. The only way to turn it off completely is to pull the fuse. Same as most modern cars.

there's a sequence of despressing the pedal and pulling the handbrake that completely turns off traction and stability control as well as ABS. though I've heard this car is pretty rowdy with all the aids completely off.

I want a manual, I just wouldn't be able to drive it off the lot. I'm half seriously considering getting my buddy to drive it off the lot and teach me, oh well still daydreaming for now.

Problem with a CVT is that CVTs can only (afaik) handle a very, very limited amount of torque. And this is a tuner car; very few people will leave it stock.

The FRS has the same Coefficient of Drag as the BRZ, the .27 is the GT86 Limited, sold in Japan, which has a spoiler and the same underbody panels of the Series Blue. It's a common mistake, but look into it and you will find that I am correct.

Even though the FRS is more performance oriented I think I'd go with the BRZ...the extra 10-15lbs is fine, and the drag coeff is near negligible, especially in autoX where speeds won't get too high. Though I guess it would also depend on what the OTD price comparison would be, which I'm too lazy to try and figure out right now. Great cars, bit weak, but great cars none-the-less.

Great review! Although I'm not a fan of the automatic with this vehicle, I did find it fitting that you did a review for it after already reviewing the BRZ. Would you ever consider doing a review for the Honda CR-Z? Preferably for the post facelift with the S+ button? I really like your methods of testing gas mileage and would appreciate some real world info on how the CR-Z does through some more varied and realistic driving conditions. Thanks!

Toyota/Subaru are really shooting themselves in the foot by not putting the turbo engine from the WRX in this car (at least as an option). The BRZ/FR-S has a great chassis, some of the best steering in any car under $65k, and an awesome gearbox. It's really too bad many people overlook these cars because they don't have enough low-end grunt.

Reptilian Overlord they didn’t want the frs to compete with the sti. Sti sales would’ve been way less if they frs/brz came turboed

Fun car to drive... Unfortunately the ND Miata I drove really outshined it. BRZ Limited I drove felt dated, cheap, and slow compared to the ND Miata. Would still pick one up for a cheap enough price. The low CG is very noticeable and cool on theses.

40.6 mpg? That's awesome! What was your driving style like? I have to shift into neutral when downhill to achieve 41-43 mpg. Then again it could be because my car has heavy snow tires on, ruining fuel economy.

@@artilleryisbetter That os irrelevant. Coasting in neutral puts demand on the engine to initiate decent rpms when it is not 'connected' to the transmission.

You are correct in that you misunderstood. In any trim level of either brand, the auto will be heavier than any trim of any manual (of either brand).

+Remi Ramos Scion uses a common head unit across their models. The model setting adjusts the output for the speaker set up in each car.

the arm rest is like a 300 dollar extra so i said no and i made one out of a large mcdonalds cup, some foam and an olad beanie i had.. i put the foam in the cup so it stick out the top a bit, i wrapped the top woth the beanie and i zap strapped iot all together. it was basically free, its comfortable and i can remove it when i dont need it. DIY.

a brand new fr-s is overpriced..i noticed over the years the price went up a few thousand dollars...the 2016 automatic fr-s is at $27,000 now..you might as well stretch some money and go for the limited brz that's why their sales numbers are going down because people that want this car can't afford it and those that can afford it won't buy it and will go for something with more prestige and luxury performance...that's why the 370Z had poor sales too the fr-s should be in the low twenties

7:07 I agree with you 100%. I was the 3rd passenger riding in my friend's FR-S, and I was thanking God that I have small Asian feet AND I wore flatter shoes that day. My other friend who was in the passenger seat (I was in the back-right) scooted his seat all the way back and the tops of my shoes were nibbling on the underside of his seat. Not a comfortable ride unless you're in the driver's/passenger's seat. Jordan, if you see this, thank you for lugging my fat ass to get some Mongolian BBQ!

Spark plugs cost $9 dollars in the U.S. and you can easily replace them yourself. It sounds to me like you're getting ripped off.
