70% of all the cars that come into our 2,200 car yard here in Arkansas that are not wrecked, come in simply due to "no oil" and lots of these are 7-13 years old with under 150,000 miles. NO ONE checks engine oil.... low tension piston rings= oil burning at 1 QT/1,500-2,000 miles and now everyone is doing 10,000 mile oil changes.... Great Video!!!

They do the 10k interval now because quick lube places tie into the manufacture and that's what they now recommend. Kia recommends 7500 miles between service. Basically engineer's planned this out so you will buy a new car after 8 years. On my personal car I use full synthetic every 3k.

Subaru engines burn, consume or leak after 125k. There are so many places where oil disappear, like the timing cover, valve cover, cam carrier seal. And let's not forget the head gasket, which goes around the same time... I'm in the process of rebuilding mine, hence watching this video.

I know this is about 11 months after the fact but the valve spring recalls all required the engine to be removed from the vehicle. Special tools were developed for the FB20 Impreza and Crosstrek so only the valve covers required removal, but the FA20 required removal of the camshafts and use of some Toyota/Lexus spring valve spring tools. Both processes required the use of regulated air to hold the valves up (closed) while the spring replacement was performed. I did a few hundred of these recalls, about 30 were BRZs. Love the videos! Have a great day

I AM SO GLAD YOU SAID IT. People DO NOT check their oil level. ITS THE SAME with the typical EJ engines found in STI's. "the STI ring lands are weak" no, you dont check your oil, the entire combustion process over heats due to no lubrication, and then the ringlands fail. And its funny, if you actually look at where the oil come from on say (for example) my 2005 STI, cylinder 4 is the LAST to get oil, even AFTER the turbo.... so when you run low on oil, cylinder 4 starves. And what happens? ring lands! overheat and kaboom. every time. GENERALLY most STI owners have more money than brains. Someone else built their motor, installed their upgrades, etc. VERY FEW subaru owners I've met do their own work. Its always "I took it to a shop and they did the work".... and they never check their oil, and then cry when shit blows up. And then because they have more money than brains, they just buy another built motor, have it swapped in for them, and keep driving like nothing happened. 100% user error. I AM SO HAPPY you said it. Because its factually true. Even with these newer toyota/subaru hybrid engines.

I have done close to 250 valve spring recall's on the fa and fb engines and yes green is the original springs and blue is the updated however it does depend on the year of the vehicle. the fa's I could complete in about 9 hours (excluding sealant curing time which was usually overnight) that's driving the vehicle in to the shop to completing the test drive and final inspection. The fb's I could complete in under 5 hours providing they don't require a full reseal of the cam carriers and front cover.

Subarus are rather notorious for using oil. When I bought it (used 2011) the dealership said the oil had been changed. The first time I gassed up I checked the oil, it was TWO QUARTS low. I found that there had been a recall for oil consumption but my serial number was just outside the range. I had it tested anyway. The dealer claimed that the oil consumption was not enough for the recall. The guy at the parts desk unofficially told me that Subaru recommends SAE 0-22 oil to help with the gas milage. He said he went to a slightly heavier grade in his Subaru (wink). I went to SAE 5-20 Mobile 1. The oil consumption decreased to less than 1 qt/1000. The gas mileage dropped slightly, but I STILL CHECK THE OIL EVERY TIME I FILL UP WITH GAS!

@@poohssmartbrother1146that's probably part of your problem that caused your accident. The tyres are more important than the brakes when it comes to getting you to stop, ironically. I'm just going off the information in your comment but even with upgraded brakes, they won't make a noticeable difference (except on track with repeated braking) unless you got good tyres. Make sure to have really good grippy tyres when driving like that next time to avoid another field frolic.

As someone who owns a 2015 FR-S with it's native FA-20 engine that's turbo-charged, running almost 500 WHP on E85, there's a lot of steps one needs to take to ensure this doesn't happen. In reality it is not hard to do; but a lot of the kids that own these vehicles are social media junkies that run aggressive tunes/pop'n'bang tunes for clicks and clout. Then their engine blows up and suddenly their car vanishes, and they then claim it's because they're tired of their car. I notice this A LOT in the US. Here's what I did. Had the car since 2015 and it's purring like a happy kitty in 2024. I did get the clutch changed twice during this time however. -REBUILD YOUR ENGINE. DO NOT RUN A TURBO ON A STOCK BLOCK, no matter how little boost you run. The high compression these have out of the factory makes turbo'ing your stock block a literal ticking timebomb. DO NOT DO IT. Also do NOT spare any expense; get forged, top/upper mid of the line pieces for your car. No, you don't need to go super crazy but don't cut corners on your parts. (Main bearings [crank, etc], rods, pistons, valve springs, also depending on mileage, getting a new OEM crankshaft might not be a bad idea either, good BoV, wastegate, upgraded piping, etc. are all essential.) -If you're running 20 LBS of boost like I am, get valve springs that can accomodate your boost levels and do NOT toy with being more aggressive and pushing more boost; just don't do it. -Upgrade your exhaust for more flow. Simple as that. -Fuel pump, rails, injectors (this is the least important but I would still recommend.) -GET COOLING. Oil cooler, and i upgraded my water hoses as well. I even upgraded the radiator fans to 12" fans. Again, do NOT cut corners here. Keeping your oil cool and engine cool especially since I'm back and forth between Nevada in the US, and 松山, 日本 where it gets very hot, this is an extremely vital step on your FA-20's longevity. -If you are daily driving this car like I am, do NOT abuse it. Simple as that. I drive it very conservatively even though it goes very fast. Though if I need to get out of a tight situation, I can do that nicely. -Lastly, and the easiest step, just keep up on the maintenance on the damn thing. Use the correct oil, change your fluids correctly and keep a log and timestamp when you performed these steps and you'll have a happy FA-20 ^_^. Sounds easy but...apparently for lots of people it is not O_O.

I drive a 79 Subaru wagon with an 87 EA71S engine, the one with chrome plated aluminum cylinders and low tension rings. Revs to 6500 RPM and makes 130 HP with dual carbs over the intake ports and 42 degrees total timing. Rock solid reliable being a pushrod engine, has titanium valve spring retainers, etc. Still has the original aluminum pushrods with cast iron ends even. The one issue it has is burning oil. It's not worn out, at all, but those old style low tension rings are very prone to burning oil, even running 10w-60 oil vs the stock 20w-50. So I check it every morning. Never seen it get lower than halfway up the dipstick, even after 12 hours of continuous driving at 4,500 RPM. I change the oil every 5,000 miles and it's always fine. Have a Ford billet 90 deg oil filter adapter and run a Premium Guard PG4651EX or UPG63R filter, sometimes the Microgard branded version. I like the silicone gasket. Never a problem.

the valve spring recall is NOT done with the engine in the car! On the FAs, the whole cam-plate assemblies are removed. (On the FB20s, the cams can be left in with some special tools to fill the cylinder with compressed air so spring replacement can be done mostly-assembled, but even those are still done out of the car.) One challenge for the D4S system for cores is that the injectors and the injector driver module (which is missing on your example here) are all matched together. Must have been an FRS engine, not sure about those, but the BRZ comes with NGK plugs (as to all other subarus) from factory. You don't need to pull wrist pins on the F-series engines to get the pistons out, but access to the cap bolts is kinda tight as you discovered. They're an E-Torx fastener, I forget the size offhand but I think E12?

@@CaptainSpadaro Don't worry. The factory engineers knew about this problem since 2018 when the MY12/13 FA20 engines were being recalled and the recalled engines were failing due to overuse of gasket material which was being sucked into the oil pickup tube after the recall was completed. The engineers should have designed the new engine to use a gasket instead of an RTV. They knew this was an issue. They did nothing. They are blaming customers that the engines are blowing up. Woo, one of the engines I’ve been waiting for! Thanks Eric! I thought the recall was only for early production engines. Allegedly one of the other ways these die is dealers (particularly Toyota) using too much RTV or applying it incorrectly when performing the recall. The application instructions are pretty intricate - they even include a template to practice on if I remember right. That said mine is still running great ~3 years after the recall, including a bunch of track time. Would be awesome to see a Mercedes M274 or M113 (non-K) engine. Shouldn’t be too hard since MB put those engines in everything from their respective eras…
@CaptainSpadaro
@CaptainSpadaro 2 жыл бұрын
That is EXACTLY what's been happening: people take them in for recall work and the tech uses too much RTV, the RTV falls off, clogs the oil pickup, and chaos ensues. It happened to a buddy of mine 2 years ago when a group of us went down to Tail of the Dragon; he had had the valve spring recall done before we went down there, it started knocking while we were running the Dragon, and that was it. What's even scarier is that the new cars are (apparently) being affected by excess RTV FROM THE FUCKING ENGINE PLANT. I don't know what's going on with Subaru but they need to get their ducks in a row.

For the 5 decades I’ve been driving, I’ve been checking the oil every time I get gas. In the past few years, I’ve asked the “attendant” at various Costco gas stations how often they see people checking oil. A few per shift is a common answer. Even allowing for breaks for the attendant, he views upwards of 800 full ups per shift. So, on-the-order of 1/2% of drivers regularly check their oil. 1 in 200. Pretty rare. Since there usually is a waiting line at Costco gas, I usually release the hood latch while waiting. I’ve had other customers “alert” me to the unlatched hood because they so rarely see people checking their oil while filling up with gas.
