Just my opinion that Yuzu's english is not bad, however he is the one that usually careful with his words, especially when you talk to media, you don't want to spit out any words or sentence that could make you regret after that. So double pressure on him. For a normal, friendly conversation he could handle it well ( i think). You can see that he understands what his translator is saying because he was paying attention closely to her words.

I think he can't really express himself well. Very often he uses generic sentences (with incorrect grammar) to answer questions he either doesn't understand or cannot answer because of the lack of vocabulary. I wish he could've a good teacher, because let's be honest, these interviews are limited to set of very typical questions. A good teacher would've made him memorize his usual replies with correct grammar and then he could've easily made the impression of a much better speaker. That's the trick.

I was like holding my breathe as I was watching this as he speaks English, sort of like cheering him on and hoping he expresses everything he wants to say. He did...but got to breathe so much after he spoke Japanese. It was like I was feeling what he was feeling. I understand how it is to speak a language you did not grow up with. I am sure I'll be like that if I was asked to speak Japanese! Oh boy Yuzu-kun subarashi ne! You are getting there! You'll get better soon! Yatta!!!!

As someone who kinda speaks more than one language, I’ve learned that when you’re more comfortable in one language, your voice tends to relax and usually rest a little lower in octave but when it comes to speaking something you are still learning or not 100% comfortable with, your voice tends to go up. Especially when you’re trying to annunciate correctly and make absolute sure you are saying the correct thing. Either way he’s adorable and I wanna squish his cheeks 💖

His English has really improved a lot since the Olympics, kudos to him for even trying to please the media and his fans. For Japanese people it is somehow very difficult to learn English, even if they are super diligent and hard-working people, this is just beyond their limits. He spends a lot of time in Japan, and when he is in Canada, then he is either on the rink practising, or studying for his exams in Japanese, so he doesn't hear the language that much. Only skating-specific language and common slang when he goofying around with Javi&co.

I think it's always so interesting to watch interviews and hear about the performer's feelings and thoughts on their performance, and how different it seems from ours as the viewers. And his english is so good too! His accent is very understandable and clear, he uses common fillers/slang, and he seems to understand it very well! I know the struggle of actually getting the words you want out, but he seems so far ahead already!

@ liberman7 Yuzuru spricht auf Japanisch doch mit "Siezen", also höflich, mit gewissen Abstand und mit dem Kopf, während er auf Englisch viel mehr mit seinem Gefühl spricht, selbstverständlich, weil er auf Englisch rein sprachlich nicht alles ausdrucken kann!

I started learning Japanese because of himself during the Sochi Olympics and now I can understand his Japanese so much more, now 4 years later and the Korean olympics I'm looking forward to.
