Really nice review and bravo for saying what few say regarding minivans vs. SUV's. Would love to see a side by side comparison where you can blatantly shame the comparable SUVs. Only shame is that since SUV's get by far the most attention from the automakers, they aren't NEARLY as good as they could potentially be. I own a '14 Sienna SE and am very happy with it.

Alex, I want to say thank you for mentioning the AWD version has no spare tire. I was about to purchase one and it never occurred to me to check for that. No spare tire = deal killer!
@amunderdog10 жыл бұрын
If you look a little deeper the Sienna is the most reliable of the competition. As far as the other points; Much of it boils down to swinging or sliding rear doors. In the real world, sliding rear doors have many advantages.
@emjayay9 жыл бұрын
in 26 minutes Alex might have gotten in that the SE he was testing has different seat covers and grille and lower fascia than the rest, and the clear taillights are only on the SE. The others have new but red ones with a clear backup light. The SE has inch bigger wheels and lower profile tires (optional on XLE) that would make the ride a little stiffer and handling a little sharper. . The Sienna trim levels are pretty clear and you can even tell from the grille - each trim level is a different color.

This is by far the best review I've seen across the board, maybe because Alex consistently references the differences between the minivan and a SUV/3-Row Crossover. This mom is trying so hard to not buy a minivan, but I think I'll have to wave the white flag here pretty soon. Thanks for a great review! I wish Mercedes would bring their Minivan across the pond. I would certainly splurge for that over a regular run-of-the-mill Minivan.

Did you end up getting a minivan or buying an suv? I think its kimd of funny how people have such a hangup with minivans I'ma car guy and love sporty and can't wait to get a 3rd generation sienna se they look pretty sporty even from factory but it porobably helps that I'm planning to mod it. The only thing I can really see where the suv would benifit is if you want off road capability or if you need more towing availability( but then you sacrafice mpg).

Motor trend comparison of minivans the Sienna was 7.6 to 60 the quarter mile was 15.8 at 89.9 Mph . It was the fastest of five minivans. The Sedona was second in 7.8 to 60 with a quarter mile of 16.1 at 88.8 Mph. The Odyssey was last.

Alex, as a Toyota tech, i have found that the AWD Siennas go through tires in 25-30000 miles and the run flats are much more expensive.

Panoche area is about 2.5 hour drive from Bay Area and offers an interesting test for this ground clearance theory. Odissey/Sienna can only go on "stem" roads there and a bunch of camping spots are unavailable. A RAV4/CR-V covers almost all of those spots. Still, there's a small number of locations, mostly in gulleys, which are inaccessible to crossovers, but a Tacoma gets there - and out - easily.

So sad, how most people wouldn't even consider a Sienna over a comparable crossover or SUV simply because of appearances.. Even though the Sienna is more spacious, more comfortable, more usable, easier to get into and out of, more efficient, and easier to drive with better ride quality, all for likely a lower price...
@bliglum9 жыл бұрын
Phu Doan That's debatable, and beside the point.. I simply said "Sienna" as opposed to "minivan" because this is a vid about the Sienna.. But the point remains for any contemporary minivan. That one would get much more space, utility, comfort and efficiency with, insert your minivan of choice here.. If only vanity weren't such a plaguing issue, err, concern.

Great review Alex. That said, your comparison of the minivan market fails to take into the massive difference in vehicle reliability between the models. Both the Toyota and Honda (even with Honda's automatic transmission issues) have far better reliability that is documented and something many shoppers are going to consider more than if the 2nd row seats fold into the floor or what percentage of the dash is made of hard touch plastics. This translates into a cost per mile comparison that show the Chrysler products are in fact more expensive than the other entries.

You need to revise your statement about the third seat in the second row. You said they didn't have it in the Kia Sedona but I was just at the dealership and they have it. You can also take it out with ease.

Another fine review Alex! I test drove a 2013 and a 2014 yesterday as I am looking to circle around and get back into a minivan. Loved the Sienna! Totally changed my attitude regarding minivans. The last one I had was a 2008 T&C which was awful. The '15 has some nice changes, but we will most likely be purchasing a used vehicle 6 months to a year from now. We'll give the Honda a look too, but I really feel that Sienna will be the way we go, given the standard equipment on the LE models.

Love all your reviews Alex. In this one though, I kept getting distracted by the spare doughnut tire and it made the car look fugly. Understand you had a flat and maybe scheduling/ logistics woes probably didn't allow for better planning for the shoot. Also, it will be wonderful if you can please always review the top of the line version of the cars that you test and explain the other trim levels? Would have loved to see the AWD Limited version in this video while you talk through the other versions available. Anyways, still greatly appreciate your great reviews...they are the most detailed and informative car reviews on KZbin! Thanks a ton!

Nice review! I own a '14 Odyssey. I recently got 28mpg on highway trip going 65-70mph. I love the camera on passenger side mirror for lane merging. I did not want to leave Toyota reliability, but the old interior and lack of side camera were deal breakers. One thing I would like you to include in reviews of "family" vehicles.. How far inward is the seat from the outside of the vehicle? Some of the SUVs were a little high for an elderly person. My Honda van, Even though it is low to the ground, the distance of the front seat within the vehicle, seems a little far for a disabled person to easily step into. Kind of ruins the point of having a "family friendly" vehicle.

I'm now (probably) over the hump from SUV to a minivan, and mainly debating which one (odyssey, sienna, sedona) has the best collision warning/mitigation system. +Reginald Sharma My dad has a 2014 XLE AWD and it's excellent going to Lake Tahoe on a snowy day. But if you live in the Bay Area like I do with sunny days almost all year round, I would get a FWD with a set of snow tires and swap them as I need to go to the slope. But if you live in the snow in the winter then yes. AWD is prefer. Even with AWD, I would recommend to have a set of winter tires as an added traction. My 2 cents

Very nice review overall. However, rating 7-8 passenger vehicles within the same parameters as 2-5 seat cars is just absurd. Minivans and full size SUVs which usually transport lots more people than 2-5 seater cars. Vehicles should be rated on per passenger basis. MPG should be divided to seat capacity. Otherwise you end up having cars like 2 seater corvette claiming to be better for the environment than an 8passenger minivan which carries an entire family.

yeah I guess minivans aren't as popular as pickup trucks. I mean, in most cases, you can't really tie a killed deer on its hood, can't make a pool like in pickup truck's bed, and can't go through deep mud...

@kc507710 жыл бұрын
I think the plan is the new Town & Country will be the only minivan and the Grand Caravan will be a T&C based 3 row crossover (miss the Pacifica anyone?) a year later to compete with the Traverse category. This makes sense because the Grand Caravan too much name equity to abandon it completely.

dennisscipio It doesn't make any difference whether it is a Chrysler T & C or a Dodge Caravan or a Plymouth Voyager. Just different names, different equipment levels, same vehicle.
@kc50779 жыл бұрын
emjayay I agree mechanically there is no difference but the previous divide allowed Grand Caravans AVPs to be $20k and go into rentals and the T&C got higher retail sales transactions, making good business. There's no difference between a Silverado and a Sierra but sometimes people want a little variety. I'm saddened the end Grand Caravan minivan is the end of cheap minivans.

People who poo-poo minivans in favor of CUVs and SUVs are pretentious boobs more interested in style than function. You simply cannot beat a minivan if you regularly haul more than 4 people.... but....I daily a 1996 Buick Roadmaster wagon. Old school bench seating means three fat asses in the front, 3 fat asses in the back, and....wait for it....2 more fat asses in the rear barf seats. The thing is awash in maroon heated leather, EPAs at 17/27, and with the LT1 small block will roast the rear tires for as long as you can stand it. It also tows 7000lbs. Nothing says quality like real plastic fake woodgrain body cladding!
@Lucky8s9 жыл бұрын
+Kip Amore I hope you realize that minivans and wagons are two distinct body styles.
@kipamore9 жыл бұрын
That's true, but Iaccoca specifically wanted a tall wagon when he conceptualized the thing back in the mid 70s. What is a minivan but a high roof station wagon? What is an SUV but a station wagon that doesn't look like a minivan? What is a crossover but an SUV that doesn't look like an SUV. See where I'm going with this - you can trace the customer base from CUV to SUV to MV to wagon pretty easily.
