the BCA and pool league affiliated tournaments are played on bar boxes. This is the pro side, but it is mainly for amateurs from the leagues.

They often rack the nine on the right end of the third row and it comes to rest at the left rail below the side pocket where it is a perfect connector to the ten which is usually still in the rack area.

This would be entertaining on a 9 or 10 foot table. I love rotation pool but I don't enjoy watching it played on a 7 foot table. I like the FargoRate realtime odds though.

I am always grateful to be able to see these matches... however, the US OPEN on 7 foot tables just doesn't seem right, I know the players are grateful to just play..., but to me professional pool is on 9foot or 10 foot tables... not bar boxes even if they are smart tables... I understand there is a cost there that is probably more than can be afforded. It is a business... but one of the exciting things about watching the pros play, is that they play on equipment not generally available to a lot of players, and they execute shots on those tables that we normally can't do. Its just not as exciting to watch the two best modern pool players go at it on a 7 footer...

the phenomenon of "professional" bar table events is just a testament to the sorry state of professional pool. bar table events attract players who would otherwise never think about entering a professional event, and as a result the playing fields are bigger with bigger payouts

PLEASE de-interlace or render the footage to a progressive format. I can't take looking at the scan lines every time something moves. Looks perfectly crisp... until there is movement anywhere in the frame.

Heya Zephyr, Interlaced video footage is a vestige of standard-definition television broadcasts... and it involves actually splitting each frame of video into two separate "fields." Each field is divided into "odd" and "even" lines. This happens pretty quickly... The problem is that interlaced footage is meant more for old-school CRT displays (the interior of the screen is actually coated in phosphor, which sort of tricks our eyes into seeing a continuous stream of frames). The issue I'm having with this video is that it's been rendered to an interlaced format (i.e. 1080i) and when its uploaded, KZbin actually ENCODES the visible scan lines (KZbin expects progressive video). The end result is that scan lines (indicative of interlaced footage) are then visible, in particular when something moves. I don't see the scan lines now.

Didn't SVB foul in the third rack when he measured space between the 10ball and the rail. I'm sure he never intended to put the cueball that close to the 2ball, he actually first checked and then moved it back a bit before deciding to go another route. It was like in Mosconi Cup apart from the fact that Karl then actually wanted to place the ball and not checking the space.

+Chris Russwurm, I've searched for more info and found an answer at this URL: en.allexperts.com/q/Pool-Billiards-2283/2012/7/wpa-measuring-device.htm As i can understand from that conversation the WPA rules kicks in with the rule about equipment, and therefore a cueball can´t be used as a measuring device. Nerdy to dig in this I know, but I'm always keen to know proper rules even though I am just a novice. Just to be safe I will never try using the CB to measure anything.

+no no probably more cue ball control involed on 7ft table since it's hard to get the balls spread out in a smaller space. I like watching 8-ball played on a 7ft since the balls are more clustered together.

+djhyr0 Well they have nearly perfect control of the cue ball, so that is not much of an issue. Yes more clusters and traffic, but not a big problem. Distance on really hard shots to pocket or safe is more of an issue for the top players. The extra distance put more pressure on than the traffic.

+no no its about the money. Large pro tournaments are very expensive to put on. The tables, the lighting, the seating, venue....etc. It's more cost effective to use 7ft tables.

Other than they may be able to squeeze in a few more tables in some venues, I do not see how it saves them a lot of money. In exchange for that savings, they have a lessor event, in my mind.

You're referring to 1:17:11 I assume. If you watch closely the cue hits around the third diamond and then again an inch from the side pocket. It's a bang bang hit and somewhat hard to see, but in order for it to be a foul the cue would have been following the object ball or just simply have stopped after contact.

Those who are in the booth (IMO) should just comment about what is happening, not what they would do or not do. I like the matches from the U.K. - World Cup of Pool and such as the commentators are more in tune with what they are there for in the first place.

10-ball is great on 9' foot tables. And it's great on 7' bar boxes. Elite players don't whine about such trivial shit. They just get on with it and put their excellent pool playing skills to use.

Actually elite players do whine about it, I know several personally and none of them think they should have high level events on 7 footers. They just play on them because that is what they are offered to play on in the tournaments. Personally, I skip any video with a 7 footer like this even with great players in it. The only people that are OK with 7 footers or want to promote 7 footers as pro tournament level equipment are the pool hall owners and promoters. Cheaper, more tables to fit in a space. It's just a business decision not based on how the pro game should be played.
