Thanks for the great review! I've owned an e-golf for more than a month now and absolutely LOVE IT!!! It's definitely better to drive than most EVs and is a more practical size for a family of 4. And it's a blast to drive! Normal mode leaves you wooshing past most cars from a red light light and the features not mentioned here are the LED headlights and the Tron-like LED day time running lights make it stand out in the crowd. It also has aero belly panels to help the air flow underneath smoother, and a coast mode that turns off the brake recuperation completely so you can free glide, a mode most other EVs don't give you the option for. most people drive not more than 50 miles per day, which is well within the range on today's EVs. Still not for everyone, but it all depends on your commute and facilities available. I drove all the availed EVs even the Tesla, (way too much $$$ and a bit overkill for a daily driver) and the VW e-golf seemed the most practical and best driving dynamics short of the Tesla.

Although I never had one myself... so many owners have told me what a brilliant car the Golf is. With the current situation, VW should really concentrate on this technology now. Probably needs 200 mile range to make it really popular.

I tested the E-Golf and really loved it. Very good quality, materials and design, better than Tesla Model S, which is a bit meeeehhhh on the inside, especially when compared to similar priced cars like S-Class or 7 series. Only issue I have is that I live in an appartment with a parking garage though, but still no power outlet wide and far.

This guy makes a powerful argument. I am far from being a VW fan, but even I have to admit that, with this car, VW have nailed it. So who needs petrol (gas) anyway?
@LPyourplay8 жыл бұрын
a very small percentage of people who average hundreds of kilometres daily and people who live in apartments without a garage
@RahilSethi8 жыл бұрын
First of all you should not live more than 50 miles away from your work. That is energy inefficient way to live. Even when there is no other option, people generally drive to the nearest metro station or bus station and catch the metro/bus instead. Secondly, people living in apartments live within 25 miles of radius. That will leave you with enough charge for around 2 days. Also, with more charging stations opening up, you can take your car to the nearest charging stations. We all have to compromise and give up our addiction to petrol, or bring the date of 6th extinction before 50 years from now.

Even under worse case scenarios, you can still get 80 miles range from the e-Golf. I drove it 75 mph on the highway and then 55 mph over a 2,000 foot mountain range, still came in at 4 miles per kWh.
@xchopp8 жыл бұрын
Right -- really amazing efficiency, right? We get 4 - 5 miles per kWh in suburban driving, with hills.

a free or discounted car rental service would be, in my opinion, the best way to get people to start buying electric cars. so if you need to go on a long road trip, range won't be an issue. BMW and Fiat let you rent a standard gas version of the same car for free.
@12vLife9 жыл бұрын
When will Florida get this? Can the car be left in idle with A/C running overnight... Anybody try? How much battery would that consume? Maybe they will do better than 80 mile range and 115 hp in 2016 or 2017?

I think better comparison is with Nissan Leaf. Leaf has slightly more range and also their touchscreen is easier to handle. However, eGolf looks nicer from the exterior.

The e-Golf also handles better and has lots more cargo room when the seats are folded down.

the eGolf is also much better in terms of interior quality. I've driven the Leaf and the eGolf, and the Leaf feels like a hunk of plastic while the Golf feels jsut right

In every review I see on electric cars they speak of low maintenance. How does degradation of the battery pack factor into the overall maintenance of the vehicle. The vehicle range reduces due to reduced charge so it should be factored into the maintenance cost.
@LPyourplay8 жыл бұрын
that will take quite some time if you drive sensible like not charging it to 100% (80% is the standard on the Tesla) and not decharging it completey if not necessary also a lot of electric cars have a 100k mile 8 year warranty so that will cover you for quite some time
@honestycounts93529 жыл бұрын
THANK GOD that it looks like a conventional 'normal' car on the inside. Unlike the Tesla or the Leaf, the instruments are normal looking. And while the Mitsubishi looks fairly normal inside, the outside does not look like a normal car. So this is finally a 'NORMAL LOOKING' electric car that I just might buy for myself. Thanks V.W.

+Film Magician It does plug into a domestic 110-120v outlet (as long as it's grounded) providing a full charge in ~20 hours. That's if you arrive home with the thing absolutely empty: for most people we do less than 70 miles a day, you'll be able to charge it up overnight.

I was interested until the 30 grand price tag after incentives came about. Could they offer a lower end car? I miss VW pre 95 when they had rolling windows and basic trims available. Why I kept my 92 VW GTI 16v. I don't need anything beyond awesome seats, a rolling sunroof, and fantastic ride and drive characteristics. Too complicated and too expensive. *Sigh*. I guess the Mitsubishi makes more sense at under half the price.

I sat down to really evaluate my electrical options with a car dealer. Then we started to look at range, found out that it was kinda hazardous cause I wasn't guaranteed charging opportunities at work. Then we had a look at the battery and how much weaker it got in cold temperatures, and since I live in a place where its cold that made it even worse. It didn't make it any better when we started to calculate what effect the heating had on the battery, thus the daily range. To top it off we looked at the political incentives and taxes on electric cars and pretty much concluded that it wasn't much to gain there either as the politic wind on electric cars were shifting all the time and it was no transparency. Both the sales person and me pretty much laid the whole thing to rest. The only car that could perhaps under optimal situations work was a Tesla but that was waay to expensive. The technology is premature. It's in beta-mode and it has been for years. Hope to be driving electric some time in the future, but I'm gonna have time to wear out a petrol car before that.
@BTC90910 жыл бұрын
Wait for the 2016 Leaf, it should offer a 150 mile range. That's the problem with EV's and resale. 70-90 miles isn't enough for daily round trip driving and as more EV's are on the roads finding a charging place won't be a problem. Finding a spot that isn't already occupied will be a problem so the solution is to charge at work or at home where that 70-90 miles of round trip range isn't going to cover most. Having a 150 mile Leaf that hopefully won't cost Tesla money will resolve the range anxiety and being allowed to run that AC whenever you want to will attract many more buyers. If a 150 mile EV is for sale getting good money for a 70-90 mile EV won't be easy.
@falkin4210 жыл бұрын
I don't think most people fill up their gas powered 200-300 mile range cars every three days, more like every week. 70-90 miles charging every night is plenty for no road trips. To be more clear, I do wish they had more range, but I understand weight and cost limitations.
@1guyin1010 жыл бұрын
If they stuff enough batteries in the Leaf to go 150 miles it will cost considerably more. Nissan already loses money on every Leaf (as most all electric car makers, save for Tesla) so any additional cost will have to meet with a commensurate price increase. The battery in most EVs can literally cost more than the rest of the car so doubling the size of that battery pack is a very significant cost. Having said all that, 150 miles is a much more useful range. In addition to allowing uninterrupted travel to nearby cities it will also allow almost any commuter to forget to charge one night and still be able to get to work the next day - or two.
@jmedure10 жыл бұрын
Range is an issue for those of us that go 60 miles or more one way. We could drive to work, but not back. Lol.
@djkenny12029 жыл бұрын
Ivan Vojt I agree, might as well wait. however, 90% of the public would find 90 miles plenty. I know way too many people who barely drive 20-40 miles MAX a day. Or, someone could rent something for rare long trips. Granted, they might even do that with the 150 mile range if on a massive rare road trip.
