Acura's RDX may not have SH-AWD or a turbo charged engine anymore but it is still one of the best values in the segment. It doesn't do everything right, but it does everything at the right price. For 2016 Acura decided to give the RDX a significant make over with new bumpers, new headlamps, new infotainment and navigation systems and the latest Acura safety technology from ACC and CMBS to LKAS and AcuraLink.

Acura's refreshed 2016 lineup seems to show that Acura is getting their mojo back. The 2013 RDX was just what the segment's shoppers were looking for and the 2016 RDX tacks on trendy LED lamps, radar cruise control love and more LCD real estate in the cabin. I wouldn't say that makes the RDX the best overall crossover in the segment, but in my opinion it is the best value hands down. One thing's for sure, the 100,000 folks that plan on buying a Lexus RX in 2015 need to visit the Acura dealer. Acura has perfected the classic RX 350.

Another big difference for me is the '16 now has rear vents which wasn't on previous models. This was a deal breaker for me a couple years ago....gotta think about kids in the back!

I just took delivery on a 2016 AWD, Advanced Package, Graphite Luster metallic RDX. Great SUV for a great price...$41,900. Traded in my 2010 AWD Crosstour with Navi which is being discontinued. The RDX handles better with the same interior passenger room which was my main concern. Some lesser rear storage space and I do miss the rear compartment storage bin in the Crosstour. However, I was ready to move up and the Acura by far with especially the AcuraWatch features is a steal compared to Audi, Lexus, Cadillac, Lincoln and BMW. Don't waist your money, the minute differences don't warrant the extra cash. I'm retired and this is the perfect car for road trips for my wife and I.

Excellent Alex...I agree that Acura should have kept the SHAWD at least an option. I am looking to purchase my first crossover in a few years and this is looking like it will be on my short list. BMWs and Audis usually drive and handle better. However, the high maintenance and repair costs are enough to keep those off my list.

I think within a couple of years, the RDX will be redesigned with a new 2.0 Liter Turbo engine, but with direct-injection, lighter SH-AWD, start-stop system, and either 8-speed dual-clutch or 9-speed automatic transmission. The current RDX does start to feel dated over time, despite the refresh.

Great review, Alex. I bought a 2016 RDX during COVID, in part thanks to this review and looking back on it for a couple of years now I thought I’d revisit the review and see what I thought. Your review is spot on, and is the best I’ve seen on the subject. Driving the RDX is pleasant on a daily basis, and taking it on the road is comfortable. I appreciate the generally excellent visibility and generally well designed amenities. It’s quiet, though not as quiet as some other vehicles I’ve been in, but not distractingly or annoyingly noisy. My biggest complaint about the vehicle is the occasional noncompliance of touchscreen and audio inputs. Sometimes it’s perfect, sometimes it’s a struggle when paired to an outside source. I’ve got the Tech Package and it’s supposed to have the greatest in stereos, but it’s really pretty middling. You have to work extensively in a submenu to try to tailor the sound to your liking as midrange is weak. It should have a better sound system. The stereo is actually inferior to the one that came in my 1999 Honda Accord LX when I bought it new (outstanding car!) I’m just not that enthused with the touchscreen lag times and heads-down time they require. Having said all that, I’ve had zero issues with my RDX (other than the audio and touchscreen stuff described above) and it’s been a great purchase that I have never regretted. Thanks again for the great review!

Alex, it would nice to include a rating on the audio performance of the vehicles you review. One thing to note about the RDX is the terrible mid range sound performance of its ELS sound system, I own the vehicle and the stereo is very disappointing considering ELS is marketed as something great (which it is not).

Alex, once again, a simply spot-on review. I had the chance to drive a '15 MDX in a Cadillac ride-drive event a year ago, and agree the SH-AWD makes a difference when the road gets a bit curvy; not so much under more routine situations. As you indicated in the response to another post, in foul weather either it's conventional AWD or SH-AWD will behave relatively similarly, I suspect. While I realize the RDX is about one size smaller than the Nissan Murano or the new Ford Edge, I'd bet it will be crossed shopped with the Platinum / Titanium models of both. Other than the difference in cargo capacity with those two, how would you rate the performance, ride, interior space, and fuel mileage against them? The four of us who participated together in the Cadillac event -- the MDX, RX350, & SRX -- felt the MDX was miscast in the comparison (too large) and that the RDX would have been a better choice. Coincidentally, all 4 of us agreed the MDX was by far the better vehicle of the three.

Thanks for your detailed U Tube description of the improved 2016 Acura RDX!!! Both the Acura MDX & RDX are great vehicles! Suggestion, could you put the MDX on your SUV Size Chart - comparing it's size to the other SUV's? Thanks! * I'm undecided weather to purchase a Certified 2016 Acura RDX Tech or a Certified 2014 MDX Tech? The price difference is close? I I prefer the improvements on the 2016 RDX over the 2014 RDX; however, the price difference is $4000 - $5000 more! Thanks! 06.05.17

Hi Alex thanks for all your videos, you are my 1st go to channel followed by Cnet on cars. I would like you to talk and compare more of the new technology options. I.e. adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist to name two. Both in their convenience and especially in their safety. I am shopping for a midsize or compact SUV for my elderly parents, (RDX, XC60, Lexus NX) and what I really want for them is safety and autonomous driving features are important because I feel it helps us all drive safer and they also bundle up the newest crash mitigation features together. (Volvo XC90 will come out with some rear end collision mitigation) BUT, no one is really comparing these features. Please start and if you have any suggestions in this segment, please respond to this comment. Thanks again.

The omission of SH-AWD on the RDX is odd, given Acura's entire lineup all possess SH-AWD as an option. However that doesn't seem to bother buyers as the RDX is one of the best sellers.

Alex on Autos Thanks for the awesome review as always. I am seriously considering to buy the RDX. 1. Any thoughts on the premium ELS sound system. Also are you considering to add sound system as part of your review in the future ? 2. On your other reviews about the newer Acura Models ( i think the TLX), you had mentioned that Acura has improved the cabin noise levels when compared to older models. Has the 2016 RDX improved the cabin noise level over previous generation? And how bad is it when compared to the NX ? Thanks
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 9 жыл бұрын
The ELS is a decent sound system, it's on par with the midgrade systems you find in the Germans. Personally I don't find the modern Acura models to be loud at all, the 2015 RDX was quieter than the first generation model and 2016 has refined it a hair more. I think that the NX 200t is quite similar.

The reason that I was never interested in the turbo four was the fact that it had huge turbo lag and it was not smooth. The reason why Acura did not include All handing all wheel drive: a) It would add an increase in weight b) It would reduce gas mileage.

I won't be surprised if the section of the tailgate from the chrome strip down, is a plastic cover. I'm pretty sure the entire tailgate is sheet metal but with plastic covering the lower half. That way, if there's a minor rear impact, you just replace the rear bumper cover and the plastic garnish on the tailgate.

Thanks for the detailed review, Alex! Your reviews are the most informative for me and I've been referring people to them when I hear that they're buying a vehicle. I have a 2014 Base AWD RDX and I'd have to say that it's been quite affordable for to maintain the vehicle. Oil change is every 8-9 months at $75, insurance is approx. $60/mo., I've only had rear differential fluid done apart from the oil change (tot. $155 + oil change), and it can be serviced by my local Honda dealer (Acura service dept. is in Reno, NV). I can tell when the vibration canceling system comes on and I have to say that it's also not intrusive. And yes, biggest bang for the buck for me as this vehicle is more comfortable and quieter than the Subaru Forester XT that I was looking at as well. Luxury purists will, of course, pooh-pooh on its interior and styling, but IMO, if you supposedly have that much cash on you then why the heck are you even looking at sub-$50k vehicles if you want that much luxury?

+Drummond Fengdahl Feedback on a 2014 RDX AWD Base - Transmission slippage occurred at approx. 34,000 miles (Jan. 2016). I had to bring it in to the local Acura dealership twice: 1st time, transmission flush to see if issue will be addressed (it did not); 2nd time was a 2-day diagnostic that resulted (on the last test-drive of all things) with the transmission being replaced. Thank gosh for long warranties on Acuras or I'd've been eating it all. The dealership also warranty-replace the rear shocks due to the thumping noise whenever you hit a depression in the road (e.g., manhole covers). The transmission replacement is a re-manufactured unit, so it's not new. The car certainly drives smoothly now, but I wonder how long that'll last. I'll wait to see what happens up till the 60,000 warranty. If problem recurs before then, I'll get it repaired through warranty and trade it in. Quite disappointing in a "premium vehicle" that is never driven hard and regularly serviced. For those of you who may experience the transmission slippage, document the incidences as much as you can (date, time, weather condition, noises, driving-feel, etc.) as much as you can, and you may want to report it to Acura Corp ASAP just for records. Also, if you experience that thumping noise from the rear shocks (I kind of tuned it out), take it in before the 48,000-mile warranty expires as that may be a warranty replacement. After the repair, the RDX is even more pleasant to drive, though I'm still leery of the transmission.

Excellent review, as always - thank you, Alex! In regard to your notes on SH-AWD, I'm curious about what you think about a potential of an SH-AWD-equipped lower-trim configurations of MDX to play a role as a replacement for an AWD-equipped RDX (exterior size-wise and price-wise they are not that different, considering additional features, of course) - is it worth it?. Also, what is you opinion on Acura's AWD vs SH-AWD from the bad weather and/or harsh climate perspectives - is there a significant benefit from SH-AWD, when comparing with AWD (as well as from AWD vs. FWD)?
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 9 жыл бұрын
Aleksandr Blekh There is a benefit, but its not huge.
@AleksandrBlekh

Alex on Autos Thanks. Do you mean there is a small benefit for both comparison cases (SH-AWD vs. AWD and AWD vs. FWD) or only the first one? Also, what about my first question?
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 9 жыл бұрын
Aleksandr Blekh I think I misunderstood the question the first time around. In terms of capability and feel SH-AWD is superior to AWD and AWD is superior to FWD. The difference between SH-AWD and AWD in terms of bad weather handling is there but it's not huge. The difference in capability between the AWD system on the RDX and the FWD RDX is much larger and the AWD version is much more capable than the FWD version.

I have been looking for a easy to drive, practical and fuel efficient economy car. The best fit I can think of is a mid-size hybird/diesel wagon. A wagon is lower and lighter than a crossover/suv making it easy to drive and efficient. A hybird/diesel system is a plus for the mileage. However, on the market, the only car that can fit into this formula seems to be vw golf wagon. However, I'm not quite sure about the reliability of vw and that wagon is a little bit too small for me. A subaru outback or honda crosstour or venza would be ideal size and shape. However subaru does not have a hybird system, the 2015 outback seems to have reliability issues(4 of my friends who bought the outback is suffering), and 2.5L engine seems to be to week for the heavy body. Honda Crosstour seems to be falling out of favor, not sure if there will be any in the future. The venza have a mpg as poor as larger crossover. Alex, can you give some advice? and perhaps any option in future cars?(I'm not in a hurry to buy it now or this year)
@twystedhumour
@twystedhumour 9 жыл бұрын
Xuan Yu You might want to specify where it is that you're driving (terrain, altitude, etc.), length of the drive, and the seasons present in your area. The 2014 RDX AWD is practical for me living in No. NV. With moderate driving speed, I can easily achieve the top mpg and even exceed it if I drive like my mother (approx. 29-30 mpg at 55-60 mph). Ownership costs seem to be low as well, with $60/mo. for insurance, oil changes at every 8-9 months at $75 (at a local Honda dealership), and I've only had the rear-diff. fluid change that cost about $70. I had a Subaru Outback that consumed too much oil and started to have trouble at 84K miles, and its mpg's were disappointing. And as long as you're not a luxury purist and willing to drive a premium-brand vehicle, the RDX seems like a good choice. I enjoy driving it, esp. for long distances.
@Lucky8s
@Lucky8s 9 жыл бұрын
Xuan Yu Your question is kind of confusing for me. First, an economy car is one like the Corolla, not a CUV or wagon. If you're not dealing with snow, I'd say go with a mid-size family sedan such as the Camry, Accord, Fusion or Sonata. The Accord and Camry get great fuel economy and they're quite comfortable.

+Paul Connolly Tried it... didn't like it! I went with the RDX. The rear of the Q% is too shallow for me to lay down my full suspension 29er MTB. i fit just fine in the RDX. That was a deal breaker for me. Also, you get more rear seat room in the RDX. It's better for 5 adults.

On maintenance costs....keep in mind that Volvo, BMW, and others may have free maintence for 3-5 years that you'll pay for with the Acura. It's after the warranty that the Acura will start saving you money. But many buyers won't keep it that long.

I am trying to decide weather to get a CPO Rdx with 17k miles 2016 model for 26k, or CPO RX 350 with 33k miles 2016 model for 31k. I am leaving in a few hours to go figure it out. Both are nice vehicles. I dont know why this guy compares rx to rdx. RdX is in competition with NX, and RX with MDX.

I can't believe Acura now requires you to put premium gas in the RDX because they added SIX horsepower and ONE foot pound of torque for the 2016 model. The '13-15 only "recommended" the use of premium gas. Especially considering the Lexus RX, this cars main rival, doesn't recommend it at all, they just let you feed it regular gas as if it were a Camry.

Hi Alex. Many of your top picks do not have 4 way lumbar on driver, and don't have any lumbar adjustment on passenger seat. You acknowledge the presence/absence of this, so it clearly does make a difference. Am I right to think of it as a deal breaker though? I am searching a vehicle for once a week use, only for shopping/in city trip/long distance trip. Both driver and passenger comfort are equally important for me. And I notice Korean/Japanese vehicles often skip out on passenger lumbar entirely. As such, can these work for long distance use? Is it that, both can keep you baseline comfortable in long distance, but the more adjustable seat further adds comfort on top of baseline? Or is it that the lesser adjustable may cause aches after couple of hours? Specifically for RDX, can this be comfortable long distance tourer for 2? I do realize your seat rating often is based on context of the class of vehicle and it's competition, so I guess a 7/10 seat in luxury might be better than 8/10 of affordable. As such, assessing the long distance seat comfort (which is an absolute qualitative yes/no measure) of a vehicle is difficult for me to predict when I don't notice it in your review. Please advice. PS Big fan, watching your content regularly, highly regard your opinion!

Hi Alex You rated the range rover with 69 dB at 50 mph a very quiet ride A+ while for the Acura RDX you rated the noise a B+ with 70 dB and said there are quieter competitors. Is 1dB difference so important? Can you please clarify?
@MarcByfield
@MarcByfield 7 жыл бұрын
dB is a logarithmic scale. so 70 is 10X as loud as 69.
@coveredbridgehomestead1634
@coveredbridgehomestead1634 7 жыл бұрын
Sorry, but Marc's answer is slightly misleading. 70 dB will not sound 10 x's louder. Human hearing is only able to discern changes in volumes in 3 dB increments, so no one riding in a vehicle could tell that 70 dB is any louder than 69 dB, they would be perceived as exactly the same volume to anything but a scientific instrument.

+Ness Rosenbrad The MDX is a three row crossover that is considerably larger than the RX, the RX and RDX however are two row crossovers and that that far apart in size. The upcoming Lexus three row crossover will directly compete with the MDX.

Shin Ken It doesn't really have that much do with the car brand, more so the drive train and engine power. I assume your Accord was the V6 and the amount of power the engine produced overwhelmed the front wheels. RWD don't have torque steer while AWD vehicles have minimal to none torque steer. Hope that explains something about torque steer.

I really wish this generation and the third generation had reclining rear seats. The size of the 2nd and 3rd generation seem like they could’ve easily had added reclining rear seats in the second row. Even the 1st gen Lexus NX has manual or power reclining rear seats, & the NX is smaller than this generation or the 3rd generation RDX
