I much prefer the hard top, that's why I went for the 4 series, rather than 2 series.. I LOVE this car, one of the best BMWs I have driven.. Mine has the sport package, it scoots right along!

Great Review i love the attention to detail, I had the 320d Convertible for 8 years and it was so reliable zero issues including the metal roof.
@Belgarath7778 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the very detailed look at this car. It was very helpful to see every inch of it and you trying to show all the options inside and out. Your review was one of the reviews that led me to my purchase this month. I live in Los Angeles and I just bought in full a 428i convertible in estoril blue with the blue stitching inside. I never owned a convertible before, so maybe some of the annoyances like having to drive so slow to open and close the roof won't bother me because I never experienced a soft top. As I live in a climate where in almost never rains 9-10 months of the year, I don't think that is going to be too annoying to me. Unlike a couple of other folks here, my friends and I feel that a soft top cheapens the look of a car and can't compete with the look of a hard top. That's very subjective of course, but everyone I have discussed this with here in LA agreed with me. When I test drove the car after coming from a 2013 Infiniti G37 with 330HP, I was pleasantly surprised how good the pick up was in this car despite the lower HP. In reality, since we are always stuck in traffic or at traffic lights, the car has good enough pick up anyway :-). My car is fully loaded with most of the options. I decided to get the Driver Assistance Package, Driver Assistance Plus, M Sports Package, Technology Package, and the Premium Package. I decided not to get the upgraded headlight package or the neck warmer, but I did get the heated seats as even in LA sometimes it gets cold in the winter and having that helps :-). There were a couple of options I was really struggling with, like whether to get the Parking Assistance where it parallel parks your car for you, or the adaptive M suspension which doesn't come standard with the M Sports Package, or the Cruise control for the rare times I will travel long distance. In the end, I decided what the hell. If I'm going to have a car already priced at 60K USD, I might as well spend another 5K for all the options that will spoil me. My car is currently in production, expected to ship across the Atlantic in early July, and then hopefully by mid August arrive at my door. I went with the blue because here in LA, more than 50-60% of all cars are either Silver, White or Black. Then maybe Red which I already had for 10 years. This blue is a good balance between sporty and classy while not being that popular which I like. In the end, I wanted you to know I really enjoyed your input and it greatly influenced my buying decision. One last note, I love that the car integrates with Google Maps. The other cars I compared this too (Mercedes C Class, Audi, Infiniti, Lexus...none of them use Google Maps. They all use Satellite. Driving in LA, you must know real time traffic patterns on LOCAL ROADS. Satellite does mostly highways only. That doesn't help at all. In fact in my Infiniti, I never used the over priced Navigational System and always used Waze or Google Maps on my phone. Now I won't have to use my phone. I can see the map projected onto my windshield...another option I added which I think is pretty cool..putting your eyes where they should be, straight ahead. Google Maps integration is a BIG PLUS for LA people.

I think I have read or watched 20 reviews of the 428i/430i convertible and this review takes top honors for thoroughness, honest comparison to competitors and a frank discussion the cost benefit of certain options. Well done, Thomas. Order one for me in Black Sapphire Metallic with brushed aluminum trim and the M sport steering wheel!!! I'm your newest fan, keep up the good work...

I bought one of these thanks to this review. I really appreciate the nods to practicality BMW made with regards to the Hard Top in the 4 series. Some important downsides to note: The dual-zone climate control has no way of adjusting both zones at the same time! Even a Toyota Corolla and indeed some older BMW's have an 'All' button. In this you have to adjust your side and then also the wheel for the passenger's side. Closing/Opening the roof with the key is only possible with the Comfort Package, if you don't have it you can open all windows (but not close them!) BMW are obsessed with you holding buttons; Both the roof and the Front seat shifters for access to the rear insist that you hold the button the whole time, which is a pain and dangerous if you are in traffic and it starts to rain. In RHD countries, the manual shift on the auto box is still by pushing the lever to the left, as it would be in LHD markets. A bit lazy given that the transmission is electronic. The updated Harmon Kardon sound system isn't that great; it is accurate and punchy but the soundstage is poor compared to other luxury vehicles (You always feel the sound is coming from the front or rear, it doesn't envelop you like the best systems. Other than that the car is pretty much perfect, so just adding rhe points above if anyone is thinking of getting one.

TChighbury - Thanks for these additional useful details! My wife is thinking of getting one. TChighbury is it possible to get like 7-8 % off MSRP?
@TChighbury7 жыл бұрын
Occams Razor Not sure what country you are in, but I'd imagine it should be easy to get about 7% off with the current new car slump. With any prestige car it's much more sensible to get a nearly-new model, as all the overpriced options depreciate far quicker than the rest of the car. Check BMW's approved-used range; they artificially keep the price high on the website but you can usually get a couple of thousand off, and some are fully loaded with options.
@occamsrazor66137 жыл бұрын
TChighbury Thank you for your quick reply ! I'm in New York. TChighbury From 1 to 10 how happy are you with your BMW convertible? Only reason I'm asking is, because this will be our first convertible and these "suckers" are kind of expensive :-)
@TChighbury7 жыл бұрын
Occams Razor I'm at about 8/9 out of 10. Mine is a 430i M Sport, and pretty much every option other than comfort access, rear view camera and dynamic cruise control. I've previously owned a Lexus IS and an Audi Q3, and there are little things that annoy me compared to those cars (like the auto wipers - you have to activate them each trip and they aren't as accurate in timing as Lexus or Audi), but there's also a lot that I prefer compared to those cars. If there's a must-have option it's the Convertible Comfort pack, which gives you heated neck scarf, steering wheel and air-breaker. Also check as I believe heated seats are an option in the US (They are std. in the UK, where I'm from). Check the boot space is adequate for your needs too, it's surprisingly spacious with the roof up, but it's an 'awkward' space. I really like the car for its versatility, it really does feel like a coupe with the top up, and is such a comfortable convertible with the top down, especially at night with the air scarf and steering wheel heater. Hopefully this helps, a lot will depend on your wife's previous cars and the equipment you get with it.

I bought a new E93 325i 3.0L6 executive in 2009, now driven >70000km and never had any problems with the roof, it works perfectly all the time. Especially opening the roof with the remote is quite a spectacle and attracts a lot of attention, even today still. It's a top quality car and i love to drive it, only the quality of the leather could be better; i already had a part of the driver seat refurbished (damage from getting in and out of the car).

What an excellent review! Other channels give you 6 mins - this is as comprehensive as it gets. As a tall chap myself, leg and head room is always a key point. One recommendation would be to do a comparison of wind noise with the E class conv and perhaps Audi A5. Comfort and noise at speed is a key feature of convertibles, so perhaps 2 mins on this. Your English is excellent by the way!

I live in the UK. I have the 420D with M package. It is a wonderful car. If the roads and weather is dry the roof is down even in the winter. It is certainly a car for cursing, not racing around at speed. Thomas your review is flawless. I would add one thing though. To keep the roof opening mechanism in best mechanical condition, keep contact surfaces clean, lubricate moving components and treat the rubber seals with a proper treatment to keep them supple and watertight. This should help keep future rattles from developing.

Hallo ! Wunderschon video! I'm owner of a BMW e93. No issues with the hardtop. I'm really happy with it. No noises, works well, and with a little knowledge, you can program it to open it while driving (do it just if you know what you're doing). Taking a deep look to the mechanics of the hardtop, I would say that the roofs of the e93 and f33 , are pretty much the same. As we say in Spain: "if something works, don't touch it!"

The 4 series is so much better, not just in looks but the handling is fantastic, I love to drive it and you get so many admiring looks, funny watching people pretending not to notice you! @Crottedenez1000 Жыл бұрын
I do surprise myself by replying a 4 year old comment, but I just disagree too much with your opinion : I personally can't use the lever just because its the WRONG way around ! Regardless what other cars or machinery (even horse riding ! 😉) one rides : to go forward, or accelerate, it's always FORWARD too ! To decrease velocity or brake, one always has to pull back ! Of course, if someone just drives a BMW, he gets used to this perverted way, but if beneath you work/drive oder things, it's not just disturbing, it also can become dangerous !

Hi, I am seriously thinking of getting this car. I now have the e93 330i. I did have some problems with the roof... The BMW dealer had to recalibrate, lubricate and clean it. They were not so happy to do That, because it was under guarante. So this roof needs some extra maintenance. But now it always works fine. The 6 cilinder is a bit thirsty so the 428i would be the perfect replacement.

Thanks for the in depth review, very helpful! Just purchased the 2016 428i Convertible, in red w/dakota oyster leather and anthracite fine line trim. It's beautiful and fully customized--delivering in 6 weeks. Have included all the tech and luxury options plus M package, M Sport features and accessories, including the sport steering wheel, 18" alloys, the M sills, spoiler, black kidney grill and brake "vents", shadow lines etc. I considered and tested the 6 series soft top as well---there is no comparison if you want to have a rear passenger. The 6 has absolutely NO legroom once the front passengers are seated. This is surprising considering the extreme length of the 6 body, don't be fooled--none of that length applies to the rear seats. The noise of the soft top when closed combined with the lack of rear seat space made the 4 series an obvious choice. The 4 series has an abundance of options to build up to the buyer's preference or keep standard options and still enjoy an exceptional and very roomy convertible!

Ok...don't get into all the talk about engines and such...Let's just say...I love my 428i all-wheel drive convertible! It's fun to drive and easy on the eyes. I keep trying to talk myself into a BMW suv, but I just don't see it happening. This car is just an effortless drive and it makes most everything else I have driven seem boring and too sedate. Now I am just trying to decide on my next exterior and interior color. For the record: I ordered mine and it took several months to build and arrive ~ and when it hit the showroom floor people right and left were wanting to purchase it! It's white with the saddle interior. It's one of few cars that I don't regret getting.

I drove the 428i MSport last month. I found the driving position quite off with the steering wheel not being properly aligned to the driver's seat and the pedals being slightly offset as well. The A pillar is also quite a big blind spot. The windscreen seems to be too close for this class of car and BMW seems to use quite a thinner steel on the boot. Not a pleasant sound when you close it. Enjoyable car to drive, although I expected better ride from a car in this class.

I also picked the AMG line with alcantara sport seats for my Mercedes A Class, so I know what you mean when you talk about alcantara and summer! ;) Its a nice feeling and it looks so more sporty! Thanks Thomas for the good and nice review, I really enjoyed it!

Hi, this is a great review, nicely done as the rest of your movies. I also support your strong message about the animal rights :-). I am considering the engine for my 4 cabrio - is the 428 a right choice? Fuel consumption? Thanks in advance, Robert, Poland
@autogefuehl7 жыл бұрын
Great to have your support on this! Well those cars are dont consume little fuel, thats for sure. A 428 will surely be powerful enough however. Have you also checked our C Class Convertible and A5 / S5 Cabriolet reviews to compare ?

I have just gotten my new 425D. The main reason of chosing the BMW over the competitors was the hard top. In our part of Europe this type of car seems to be much more useful for the "every day" use. I am very happy, the car looks and performs very well. Once again, thanks for this detailed and helpful review.

dont the cows get predominately get killed for beef. Leather is a by product... should we thow out the leather so we get less productivity from each cow ?
@autogefuehl8 жыл бұрын
Thank you for taking interesting in this very important topic.Google/youtube "leather is not a byproduct" you will find plenty of information. Best overview on all those issues also here: adaptt.org/ A special video from Autogefühl can be found here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpecYn6dl7uVgLM You ll find VERY disturbing leather production footage here as well starting 17:10 kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5CwkIGEdp2ForM Would you want to support this suffering? Key facts: 1. There are productions where the cow is killed for leather first, most profitable part for the body. 2. Even if a cow gets killed for meat first, you give additional money to an industry that relys on murder. 3. Does it really matter for which cause a mammal, that is 99 % genetically identical with us, gets killed? Would you care about the difference if you get shot for stealing or purse or stealing your watch?

Very good review. I own. 2010 E93 also a good car, but my only complaint is the hard ride on run flat tyres. Some nice improvements on the 4 series Conv, the extra length adds to boot capacity and access. I have had no problems with the folding hard top, I do maintain the rubber seals and white grease the moving joints. Have you reviewed the 6 series Conv?
Change to conti extreme contact dw or sport non run flat, you will have smooth ride, buy at amazon or wallmart a emergency kit for tires, and you are all set ! Rft = crap ! Enjoy then the ride ! You will not recognize your car !

Thomas! Something just not right seeing you in a car that's not blue 😝 Lovely car. But then I'm a bimmer guy. My wife's X1 has that engine. Very nice paired with the ZF 8spd. My neighbour drives the previous version 328i hardtop convertible in "Thomas blue", white seats and 19" polished rims. Looks great! I like the idea of having a coupé when the roof is closed. I used to own a fiat spider 124 soft top which was not so nice in the winter months. Question: what was the small device just "North" of the gear select lever in what would be an ashtray? About the size of the key fob... It has a cross shape circle. Ciao! Thanks again for your detailed review.

@danilog795 жыл бұрын
@@autogefuehl That jacket is probably made by some poor young child working in a terrible working environment. Also you're against leather but want to wear artificial leather setting a good example 🤔. You could moan about using materials like cotton too. Animals will always be killed so why waste the leather? The problem is certain countries kill animals in such a despicable way mainly (China and India) I Enjoy your channel but you come across as a hypocrite.

While I enjoy a good hard top for longevity, the soft top is my favorite for quick usage and noise reduction. The 4 Series is very impressive. Excited to see BMW take the coupe a different direction from the sedan. While the four cylinder isn't as well balanced as the six, I really enjoy how the weight balance of the four. Thomas, while driving the 4 series did you shut off the stop/start feature?
@autogefuehl9 жыл бұрын
gbriank1 I does shut off automatically when you are in the sport mode, thats why :)
@stevewong69017 жыл бұрын
I appreciate that technically, performance and economy are better but I think my E93 3 series looks better. Perhaps it's the extra length of the 4 series that makes it less aesthetically pleasing. Also mine has 19 in wheels and a small boot spoiler. Lots of fun and even here in cold windy Scotland I take the top off whenever the sun shines. In all, a good thoughtful video, Thomas.

The side air gills are to relieve air pressure in the wheel arches and nothing to do with cooling the brakes. Do your homework.

Ansonsten, Gutes Video, Gratuliere !
