Typically it will work if it's in the side case. Also, on the RS and the R the key is also used to lockdown the GPS unit if you have one. I have the 2016 R1200R for fun in the twisties, and a 2020 R1250RT for tour riding. Tremendous differences in the functions of the fob in just 4 short years. For those folks that are always worried they might lose the fob, which is a problem for folks that stuff it in their pockets, instead, put the fob on a lanyard. Wear it around your neck, and when you get home, just take it off, and store it with the house key. This way it will never get lost. Never accidentally go through the washing machine, never be stolen from you etc, what ever other horrible thing you might consider. Anyway, great video!

Complete waste of time having keyless method - too easy to lose fob. At least when the keys are in the ignition you know where they are. And what is the point of an alarm that makes no noise? Alarms on a bike also a waste of time - one good gust of wind and they go off - I know, I had one on my Hayabusa and it sucked. Factory fitted and it was so bad I just disconnected it. I'd honestly rather just have the simple helmet lock than either of these two useless bells and whistles. BMW Could have kept the price a bit cheaper without trinkets like this. And imagine how much the fob costs if you lose it, knowing BMW, it will be a small fortune. Don't get me wrong, I have an R nineT and an F800GS and am very keen on trading one in for the R1200RS but I just can't see the point of adding another grand to the price of a bike for cr@appy trinkets like these. Only my 2c.

If you're afraid of losing the fob, put it on a lanyard around your neck. You'll always know exactly where it is. When you go in the house, put your fob wherever you put your house keys. As for an alarm, that makes no noise, most of the bikes that are fitted with factory security systems are like this. It's not an alarm, it's a demobilizer. Meaning if someone picks up the bike and runs off with it, they just stole an 800 pound boat anchor. It's not going to work. So not so much an alarm, as it is turning a multiple $10's of thousands dollars worth of beauty, into a worthless piece of metal for any would be theives.
