I've owned the Versys 1000 now for 4 months. Fantastic machine. Intimidated me at the beginning as I hadn't been on a bike in 16 years. Had to ride it home in the rain with greasy urban streets and no test ride on it. Low power setting/traction control mode at max. No problem. I've owned liter bikes in the 1980s and this one has even more power and thrills but with far superior handling/suspension/chassis. The 6th gear roll-on speed performance is perfect and smooth for high-speed freeway work without any sort of drama. Plenty of power. 5000 rpm's is 82 mph. Want to feel blazing fast? Just drop it down into 5th gear on the freeway and pass 6000 rpm's. This bike will howl and snap your head back as it pulls hard into the real power band from 6k-10k. There's a muscle bike under that comfortable light touring package (with the bags). I like the duality. Thanks Andy. Your reviews are a lot of fun and packed with insight!

+Cal Crappie Cheers Cal! Always good to hear somebody who actually owns the bike singing the same tune as me! It really is a very special machine. Far more nimble, sporty and strong than i expected. I even spent some time looking at used Mk1's as they have the same chassis and engine with a few less farkles. A bike I could definitely own. Enjoy and keep her shiny mate! Thanks for watching!

I just bought a 2016 Versys 1000LT a few days ago. I'm an experienced rider, however I never owned anything above 600 CC's. This bike handles WAY better than any of the smaller bikes I've owned. The forward slant on the seat is less than desirable, fortunately there are plenty of options to fix that. Thank you for the road test!

Great review! Watched it twice, once before I bought the bike and again afterwards. My last bike was a BMW K1200GT, the Versys 1000 does everything the GT-bike would do, but with far less drama. The GT was a handful! The throttle was "snatchy", the weight was heavy at any speed under 40mph. I will gladly forgo the heated seat, electric windscreen adjuster and cruise control. The Versys is like if the BMW GT and the BMW GS had a son it would be the versys.

excellent review very comprehensive road test I'm currently a Versys 650 owner but looking to go up to the 1000 and your video has helped me decide to go and look at one. I was interested in a Tiger 1050 before but for the money the Kawasaki has everything the Triumph has plus abs and tc as standard which is great. Plus a centre stand, adjustable screen even if it's crap and the hydraulic preload adjuster is another big bonus for me cause when loading the bike up for touring it's easier to just turn one knob by hand to firm it up again than faff about with a doggy C spanners under the bloody seat smashing your knuckles on the subframe.
@AndyManCam7 жыл бұрын
+bchant19 Thanks mate. Not a bad standoff between those two. I've also considered The Tiger sport. Looks a bit more exciting than the versys and there's much to be said about the triple engine! But for usability i agree that the versys certainly has the edge.

I own a '09 Versys 650 and I love the bike to bits once I sorted the vibration issue, and I'm also looking at a Tiger Sport 16+. I rode the 2016 Versys 650 and they changed quite a lot compared to the earlier models. The vibration is gone due to rubber engine mounts and the steering is much, much lighter. Pegs and seat are also slightly lower. The same snatchy throttle, though, which, compared with the gear ratios being slightly different for better acceleration mean the bike is actually worse at slow speeds and feels less planted at speed. Didn't like it at all.

Kawasaki motorcycle engineers are 5"6" and weight 42 kg! Glad to see you found the windshield knobs! Some owners replace the windscreen with something with a bit more height. Other owners find an upholstery shop to fatten up the seat's front and reduce the slope. Both changes a big difference! . You are right, a new exhaust is top of the replacement list. Still, a wonderful motorcycle! Do you think a Booster Plug might help fix the lower chucky throttle?

Nice review! I'm, really considering this bike. But what holds me back is that this thing is heavy on paper. Now you showed that when driven, it handles very well. But how is maneuvering off bike? I.e. when you have to pull it out of the garage. Second how high are you? I'm 183 cm and i wouldn't buy a bike on which I have to tip toe when standing still at red light. It will also be my first bike as here where I live you can start driving bikes without restrictions. Can you handle it without much experience or would it be suicide? Thanks :)
@AndyManCam8 жыл бұрын
+Miodrag Roncevic Thanks Miodrag! I would actually say that for the size and the power the bike felt very light to manoeuvre. It's very well balanced and the weight distribution is good. So moving it around in traffic or in the garage is actually easier than my 650cc Versys. Of course the Yamaha Mt09 Tracer was lighter still, but that's a whole other bike! I'm 193cm but i was easily able to put my feet flat on the floor. Also don't forget that you can get lowering links for the suspension if it's a tiny bit too tall. As for the power, I'm not sure I'd recommend as a first bike. This thing has some serious power and the engine revs up incredibly freely and surprisingly fast. Admittedly you would have the traction control and ABS to help you, but you can get yourself into some deep trouble very quickly with this bike and not really know it because it is so fast and so smooth. If you're confident in your own self control then go for it and build your appreciation of what the bike is capable of slowly. As for handling it, the thing is a dream to ride. So easy, so light and never feels clumsy or heavy. I'd have one!

Bewteen those two it'S an easy ´win for the Tracer. I'm a little taller at 1.92 but I found the V-Strom screen to be very buffety and loud. The tracer screen was far better. You are spot on with the windscreen. I'm my experience, every bike manufacturer has a bunch of kindergarteners making windscreens. It's unbelievable. The Givi Airflow is bar none the best windscreen upgrade for the bike. Ugly as sin but hey... The seat decline actually made me sell my Versys 1000. After owning both a BMW R1200GSA and latest a Tracer 900 I've realized that the Versys 1000 is the bike for me. Just with a seat upgrade that's more level and just a bit higher.

I find it a hard argument for the Versys 1000 over the Z1000SX. Especially in 2017. Z costs 800 dollars less in the USA, has been updated with all the modern electronics, has a good bit more power, and is lighter. Comfort? yeah the Versys has it on that. See if you can get a spin on the '17 Z1000SX.

I sincerely believe that it would be far quieter! Since I've shifted to a naked bike, I enjoy the riding so much more as the air around my head is 'clean' and so less buffety and less noisy. Sure, it's more tiring due to the wind on the chest, but that just makes me keep the speed down/take more breaks!! ;D

"Crush walnuts with my testies" lol.. Great review! I have the '15 Versys 1000. Bought it new. You're right, the screen is horrible especially when riding on the interstate because it directs the wind right at my chin and I get a lot of head wobble. Not good for long distances unless you care to wear a neck brace... The stock seat on my '15 was the same as the '16 you tested. Roll off throttle and you're rolling on balls. Also, with the stock seat I could only ride for about an hour before I began experiencing pain in and around my tailbone area. It had to go. I replaced it with a Corbin seat and no longer do I roll forward and I can ride for hours. Love it! Stock exhaust was ok for sound but it looked ridiculous. I needed something a little louder to get the attention of motorists about to pull out in front of me. They didn't really hear me. So, I went with Two Brothers S1R. It is a little louder but not as loud as the S1R I've heard on other bikes. On the Versys it has a more sophisticated sound that I just love. And, considering the bike, its looks and purpose Two Brothers got it right.

I can imagine that with those two negatives fixed (i assume a new screen is imminent?), it's a truly stupendous bike! And a bit more bark can never hurt!! Good for you mate. Keep it shiny!

Yes, I have looked at a few screens while tossing about the notion of simply removing it. Your standing up and getting clean air really has me leaning towards running without it for a while to see the difference. The Puig looks interesting with the added visor on top but the idea of looking through that rather than gazing on the open road has me hitting the "back" button the moment the image materializes. P.S It's always shinny!
@AndyManCam9 жыл бұрын
Nothing to lose by trying it. You could then pick up a cheap one on ebay and trim it down. +TwoUpTales has the Puig screen and says it's a vast improvement. He's even made a little video review about it. But i understand your point. If i wanted to sit behind a screen, I'd go in the car!

+Andy Man Cam Exactly! Here in Florida I can ride year round and more often than not in a tee shirt if I wanted to. There is only one time of the year I would gladly leave my bike in the garage.... Love bug mating season. Good lord! A taller screen wouldn't matter. It too would have a half-inch thick solid coating of those horny buggers in less than 10 minutes.

Nice bike but I will definately stay with my 2014 version of the versys 1000, not only does the new one have a face list which pleased a lot of people Kawasaki also tinkered with the motor and suspension making high speeds a bit dodgy on the backend as it wanders ;-)

@AndyManCam7 жыл бұрын
+G R Cheers GR! I meant it would be fixable either by jacking the forward mounts up with spacers (the cheap option. I've actually done this to my 650). Or an aftermarket seat will almost certainly be better (the expensive option). Finally a custom seat would definitely fix the issue (the playboy superyacht crazy expensive option!).

2017-2018 has weeded-out all the bugs..the 2019 has done too much electronic junk on the SE..don't waste your money, get the LT, if you want the 2019. Besides you can modify it with all the electronic junk yourself or by someone else, with better quality parts than the cheap manufactured ones. Kawasaki would most likely state that the higher price of the bike is due to the accessories which is a fraudulent claim. Why? Because those extra parts do NOT equal the cost of the additional price.

Good to know! It's always a shame when the product is as good as it's going to get, but because the manufacturers have to put out something new every year, they 'improve' it til its broken!

+MiniBike Matt There has to be some reason for the horrendificity of that screen! And all I could think of is Ralph from the Simpsons doing an Internship at Kawasaki. "Give the screen to the Ralph.... Once he's finished drinking the toner..."
@mattpierceplayz9 жыл бұрын
Ha! Brilliant...... It does however make you wonder that these bikes are designed with tourer in the title, and so you would expect that inherently they would make all aspects as comfortable as possible for the rider. I have never ridden one of these types of bikes, but you could have the most comfortable arse cheek cupping seat imaginable, but if your head is wobbling around like one of those silly novelty toys, it is not going to make the experience of 'mile crunching' enjoyable. And then people say, "well just buy a different screen" actually, NO, i would appreciate it if my £10,000 'sports tourer' came suitably equipped to fulfill my sportiness and touriness hankerings equally, and from the show room if you please. Yes you are taller then the average human, with the exception of those from the Netherlands. But not by that much. It's a 1000cc bike, and with the exception of someone who we shall not mention, you cannot see many people under 5ft 2" utilising such a bike, which evidently the screen has been designed for. (don't tell him i said that) :-)
@AndyManCam9 жыл бұрын
Haha! There's a strong chance he might read it himself! Totally agree. A £10k bike should work straight off the showroom floor. And in the market is being sold in too. So regardless of having japanese test riders, 5'11" Europeans at a minimum should be catered for. I have since found out that the screen is exactly the same as on the outgoing model so it's just a money saving exercise. Though considering the rest of the bike seems to be mostly cosmetic changes, i can't see where the saved money has gone. If you're going to make all new cowlings and headlights, surely a new tailor made screen is part of the same package! The BMW Mini didn't have a poorly fitting windscreen out of an Austin Mini! (Rubbish and highly flawed example, but you get the gist!)

I have Versys 650 2015 and I'm looking for bigger and heavier(more stable and planted) bike and today I have test rode big V and wasn't that happy about it. The screen sux on small and big V so no surprise there, I got a lot of buzz in right handle bar around 4000-4500 and the front break lever was buzzing quite a lot. The heat from the engine was too much imho, especially the right calf is getting a huge dose of the engine heat(confirmed by dealer as well) and today was only 24C I think so It would be unrideable in the city during proper summer heat. I think the seating position COULD be an issue on longer rides, can't be sure, just a feeling(for me). The suspension was typical Versys - hard(typically compensated by cushy seat). Not bad but it was stiffer than expected. And on higher speeds the front felt a bit light. So for me, not a replacement for small V. Also, with that weight I think they should have gone 1200cc. 1000cc is ok for 230kg but this is quite a lot more(even though the engine was nice). As mentioned in the video, the gears were too light, getting into neutral was undetectable by feeling, clutch was very light though, I liked that. Breaks ok. Overall not a bad bike. For 1000cc there is only V-Strom(I rode only the small one so can't compare), Tiger Sport(ugly AF, not that good reviews), Honda Africa Twin(different category) and probably KTM 990(don't know anything about it) and BMW S1000XR which is in another league. So this is a clear winner in this segment.
@AndyManCam8 жыл бұрын
+Opinionated Maverick Hey Mav. I found myself seeing this as a good upgrade from my small V. But then i have the mk1, with none of the vibration refinements that your 2015 has, so the 1000 seemed to buzz less to me! It's all relative i suppose! It was quite cool when i tested the big V so i didn't notice the heat, but my 650 always seems hot to me compared to my old Fazer 600 so i wouldn't be surprised. Bottom line though is that you have to be happy with what you get so throw a leg over the KTM, Suzuki and BMW and see how you feel. Oh and have fun too! ;)
@opinionatedmaverick45028 жыл бұрын
Yeah, having the MK3, I have to say, it felt much smoother than big V right after my test ride :D But I see you'll most likely go with Tracer :) For me, I think Multistrada ticks most of the boxes(even the basic model). If not(I've ridden only '12, waiting for '15 to be available), Triumph Explorer - although I'm not sure about commuting on it in the city. Best for touring though.
@AndyManCam8 жыл бұрын
The Tracer was a fine piece of bike, and for a good price. I still sadly won't be getting anything new for a little while though! Plus, after my recent trip to Italy and back, I think I'll wait until I can get something a bit bigger and with a shaft drive for sure!! Triumph explorer top of my list though as you say, might be a bit big for commuting in the city.
@calcrappie85078 жыл бұрын
The Versys 1000 has an vibration setting adjuster on the front/right side of the engine. I have virtually zero vibration until it hits 6k and then it goes away before 7k. I think most big V's hit the vibration band similar to my RPM range. I would hate to have the vibration down in the lower rpm's. Probably only take a quarter turn on the adjuster screw to shift the vibration elsewhere. The only time I notice the heat is on a hot summer day when the fan kicks on in slow/stopped traffic.

@AndyManCam8 жыл бұрын
+R.Williams It baffles the mind doesn't it! It was clearly an afterthought, or a cost saving exercise as it's the same screen that is on the new Versys 650 too. It can't possibly work on both bikes as they have slightly different geometry and layout. Lazy Kawasaki. I'd rather they left an empty space and reduced the price by $100 so I could get my own!

A screen that directs wind at your helmet. Sounds like a strange underpants contraption from the Victorian era. "Mama! This wind screen in my plus-four undies with the patented anti-wank device and erection inhibitor, is chafing the chuff out of my perineum!" "Reginald. I know it's uncomfortable to wear dearest one, but if you do not keep your penile extremities wind cooled, you may well go blind. Dr Mustafa's patented fart redirector is guaranteed to keep the helmet cool and ward off tuberculosis, fainting and genital warts. Just wear it and when it gets uncomfortable, close your eyes and think of the Empire." "Oh gosh. OK Mama. Thank you for the good and uplifting advice! Probably designed for tiny Asian people and Japanese midgets -- which is a seriously debilitating condition.

Andy Man Cam I thought that also. Time we raised the cultural level in this country. For far too long we have allowed TV to be dumbed down. I think the BBC would love it and Channel four would be ecstatic if we just promised to include some gratuitous shots of naked women and children. Could be an earner. I will get writing.

+Andy Man Cam Some more rambling thoughts on your reply: You forming the image in your head is known as confabulation. It's what readers of books do all the time and it's great. It gives writers a rest. As a writer it would kill me to have to describe everything in detail as I am sure you understand. Apart from anything else, the books would be twenty thousand pages long and excruciatingly boring. The writers job is to only include detail where it is needed and exclude the rest. For example, I may write, 'Out on the ocean a ship passed by.' As the reader, you will fill in the blanks for me. and I have no need to go into any more detail UNLESS that ship is a vital part of the story. If the story is set in 18th century England, what kind of ship passing by would it be in your head? Certainly not a container ship. Right? But, in YOUR head it could be a barque, a man-o-war, a treasure galleon, or any other kind of 18th century ship you happen to like in that moment. Unless I tell you -- the reader -- differently, you will also add the weather conditions, the direction of sail and the time of day according to your own whim. I enjoy -- as a kind of hobby -- playing with words and ideas, as you say, randomly -- by tilting other peoples words and ideas off axis and sending them off in unexpected directions. One of my heroes, Spike Milligan, was fantastic at doing that. But hey, this is You Tube and not work. Here I don't have to worry about sentence structure, the careful use of the adverb, the selection of tense and consistency in using it. On You Tube comments, I can be a opprobrious, censorious, maleficent dick head, or perhaps, just as easily, an idiot with a warped sense of humour who happens to say something smart now and then. Any number of personality combinations are possible and the joy of the Internet is you do not have to be consistent unless you want too. I guess it's all a matter of whim that is based on how you feel at the time, in exactly the same way as the reader filling in the blanks for themselves. It's a bit like what happens if someone knocks on your door and asks, "Do you have a bathroom I can use?" On a good day, when you are not feeling combative or irritable you may simply reply, "Sure, top of the stairs, first door on the left." However, if you had just you looked out of your window and noticed your bike has been stolen you may well reply with something more caustic. "No pal, in this house we all shit in the sink!"
