My headlights are angry. I thought angry headlights were dumb and there to help market the car as "tough and/or aggressive". It's my first Mx-5. Drove my parents' NC and it's fine but a little heavy. The ND is great. The gearbox is truly astonishing, and also the reason I chose the vanilla MX-5 over the FIAT 124 guise, since that uses the old gearbox to cope with the turbo. Can someone explain to a pleb the whole "slow car fast" vs the "fast car fast"?
@baileyearls92567 жыл бұрын
Basically that you can use more of the car within reason. Example: I can easily have a lot of fun driving a 488GTB on the road but ill never be able to use all of the car without getting on a race track, where as if I were in a BRZ i could (reasonably) take it on a back road and drive it at the limit for any given amount of time without crashing or getting arrested. I believe what he was getting at is that it's better to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow.
@sadmanh06 жыл бұрын
a slow car fast is a car that isn't particularly fast but it's driving dynamics makes you feel as though you're driving fast, even though you're not going particularly quick; fast car fast is just any regular fast car which needs to be driven fast to be exciting

Got some try hard explanations. I'll try to keep it simple. Slow car fast means you can put the pedal to the metal, wind up the engine, and shift through most of your gears and not be going 150MPH. As opposed to, say, a Corvette that if you floor it, you shift once and you're pushing 30-40+MPH over the speed limit.

I have a friend who properly wedged a 350 V8 into a 1990 - 91 ( not sure which ) Miata . Upgraded suspension , brakes , rear end , ect . Looks fairly stock but accelerates crazy hard and handles .

I like how the new Fiat 124 looks more like Miata than ND Miata looks like Miata.

TheLaXandro …God damn it, you're right!
@redmr2na7 жыл бұрын
TheLaXandro I never thought of that but yeah, that's true, the 124 is a much prettier design. I feel like Mazda is growing tired of being the producers of the worlds most popular sports car, and I slow but improceptivey trying to phase it out.
@ReverendTed7 жыл бұрын
This looks more like an S2000 than a Miata, for sure.
@redmr2na7 жыл бұрын
Actually this Not a Miata, a 124 spider or an S2000. This is a oh what's the word.....abomination. This literally is Mazdas attempt to make a 3 city car. They're jealous of the Smart and Scion iQ so they thought they'd have a crack it. So their engineers took a 3 and cut the chassis down 6"-1'. Lengthen the doors because it could only seat 2 people by city car standards.
@TheLaXandro7 жыл бұрын
But Miata's chassis is its own platform entirely, not cut down 3. The only other longtitudal RWD car in the lineup is Mazda BT50, and it's a Ford Ranger, so it can't be that either.

I'm an oddball here, I love my G8 GT with its big ol V8, I loved my 300zx! with its twin turbos and its chaotic engine bay, And now I own a Mini Cooper JCW. I love anything unique and a Mazda Miata, will be a car I will own at some point just need to find the right one!
@20150717 жыл бұрын
The new (2016 new?) Mazda MX5 (Miata) for me, is not really that angry looking at all. Sure the 90s Miata is cuter than this car but still, it's not that bad. I mean, at least it's not as threatening as the Lexus grill... Oh btw please review it's Italian brother - Fiat 124. I hear mixed reviews about this car and I'm curious about your opinion. Keep it up +RegularCars

Everyone says the headlights are angry, but with that big smile I never see angry. A little squinty, but not angry at all.

doesn't the new mx-5 have a 1:1 6th gear ratio? as opposed to a tall overdrive?
@MisterDumptruck7 жыл бұрын
Correct.
@martzink7 жыл бұрын
Wish it had a tall 6th gear so you don't have to whip it at 3500rpm on the highway
@dhoffnun7 жыл бұрын
@MartZink: This should be an option on the touring package.
@Reginald_Harrison7 жыл бұрын
MartZink. I own one, it's perfectly fine on the freeway. The engine is definitely not screaming at highway speeds. 3500 rpm in 5th gear is like 67mph. In 6th gear 3500 rpm is 85+mph.

After the Probe GT spent 14 years in my garage and then left to sit in my brother’s garage, I needed something that I could drive on long trips. I was looking at the MX-5 but I needed room for grandkids. Hence the ‘13 Focus ST. And the Focus is so easy to mod and tune.

I own a late NA ('97). The main flaw with the ND (as with the NB and NC) is that door line is raised such that it's no longer comfortable to hang one's left arm over the side. Side impact protection means you're riding in a bathtub. Give me that Triumph TR-3 feel (the pinnacle of slow-car fast) any day over IIHS ratings. I added a roll-bar to the NA for a bit more side protection (at the cost of some 50 lbs more weight), but I think the best crash protection is alert driving and sticky tires. They've saved me on several times. Visibility of bright yellow/red paint helps, too. I'm personally waiting for the yellow ND before I join the 21st century.

"slow car fast is more fun than fast car fast" LOL spoken like a true Honda driver. Sure I can't open up and rip on the throttle as often as I'd be able to with a Miata but if I wanted to replicate the experience I'd just go a couple gears too high and set aside a couple of days in my calendar for that 0-60 pull.

155hp might not seem like much but it's been found that Mazda was sandbagging on the exhaust on the ND. Just a header back exhaust and a retune will gain you about 50hp.

hussguy1990 yeah I was like 9th gen from 2012? Or the EP3 from the early 2000's? Plus, if he was coming from the 2012 Si, that'd explain why he thought the Mazda was so much better... the 2012 was a bad year for the Civic. Especially the Si.
