I know these are super hard vaults, but one word to describe everyone EXCEPT Simone is - clunky. They look clunky in the air and when they land. But then Simone. When I saw her first vault I gasped. It was so gorgeous. Super high, beautiful form, tight turns in the air. The epitome of power and grace.

Giulia was actually pretty good too, cleaner form than I’d seen from her in the past. What I couldn’t believe was the score for Paseka on her vaults- those were just awful looking.

No. Retton (84), Hatch (04), and Maroney (12) all had silver. Maroney should have been the first to win VT in 2012. First Olympic Golds: Team -1996, AA- Retton 84, VT-Biles 16, UB- McNamara 84, BB- Miller 96, FX- Raisman 12. The only other individual event Olympic golds are: Johnson BB 08, Biles FX 16. Of course after Retton in the AA Liukin, Douglas, Biles followed her.

The commentator who was questioning why Dipa Karmaker would do her hardest vault second instead of first, that Nastia was also puzzled over, my thoughts are that, yes, doing the hardest vault first makes sense in that it allows the gymnast to execute it when their energy level is higher, as opposed to second when they are more tired out and spent from the first run and vault. BUT, by doing the hardest vault last when it is such a high stakes vault, with so much more room for error or injury, they can insure that they still have two vaults to score because they already did their easier vault first, whereas if they competed their hardest vault first and land it badly, injuring themselves, they wouldn’t be able to compete their second vault and still get a cumulative score.

You are wrong, she wasn't worried about injury. Karmaker switched up the order of her VTs because she wanted a VT medal. Tim and Nastia were confused because she switched up the order. In qualifications she did the Prod first and the Tsuk 2 full second. In qualifications she had a problem on the Tsuk 2 full as her second VT and almost put her hand down. She BARELY qualified into VT finals in 8th, just edging Britney Rogers of Canada by a super slim .067 of a point (14.850 to 14.783) She did the Tsuk 2full first and if she had a good landing she would go for the Produnova. However, if she had a problem on the Tsuk 2full she would have scrapped the Prod and went for an easier handspring front full VT that she often used instead of the Produnova at smaller meets. This was stated in an interview after the games. It was a medal or nothing she said, since she had just managed to qualify, she was happy to be the 1st Indian woman to make an EF at an Olympics, but she wanted a medal. In hindsight, based on her 1st VT she should have scrapped the Prod and just did the front full VT as she probably would have passed Steingruber for bronze. Since she hot the Tsuk 2full well enough, she went for the Prod hoping for a medal. @@mchur001 That actually makes a lot of sense. No use risking the harder vault if you've got no chance of winning. Interestingly, that's basically the mirror reasoning for what I've heard about Hong un Jong (who wasn't shown on NBC for some reason) doing the same thing. In her case, the idea was that if she managed to hit her Cheng really well, she could play it safe and go for the Amanar, but if she didn't score high enough on the Cheng, she'd have to risk the triple, which is what ended up happening.

@@saragrant9749 Also there was a limit on how much they can deduct for large leg separations when entering the horse. Leg separations that are shoulder width apart would get the same deduction as Paseka doing almost a full split after the round off entry, the rules should really be changed so that leg separations this big should receive a 0.5 deduction. Jade Carey also has this problem on vault (although not as significant), yet she still consistently scores higher than MyKayla Skinner whose entry and twisting form is cleaner

I didn't think this set was terrible (especially compared to some of what I've seen from her), and I actually think the score for her Cheng was probably pretty fair, but her Amanar should have been deducted more harshly just in comparison to that Cheng -- they were comparable in pre-flight and flight and the Amanar landing was way worse, but the E-scores are within a tenth of each other, how does that make sense?

Okay, there's a really weird audio cut just before Paseka's second vault. I'm assuming the broadcast muted out part of Tim's comment for some reason, but cutting it out and then in where they did just makes it make no sense. (After watching it a few times, what it reads to me is that what was cut was a comment regarding Hong un Jong trying a triple, but geez, if they have to mute it out, at least mute out the entire sentence instead of just half of it!)

Maria Paseka's Amanar only -0.1 lower than her Quals one, when the landing was worse here ? With a bent and huge leg sep on the entry -0.4, hands position on the table -0.1, crossed feet -0.1, low landing -0.3, distance -0.1 and huge step -0.3 => should have been 15.041 and not 15.241 ! Dipa es el ejemplo claro cuando hay talento y ganas no hay obstáculo para cumplir un sueño. India un país muy pobre, donde practicar gimnasia es casi imposible. Small hops, her legs were separated on the roundoffs, and her feet were crossed. On the Cheng she piked down. But that’s literally it. 0.4 sounds about right to me - a 9.6 execution is super vaulting.
