My uncle did that for 38 years at one of the auto transport companies here, and he loved it, the trailers weren't as advanced as they are now but lots of hydraulics back then too. He would go every evening to the trans load yard just on the outskirts of the city and pick up vehicles coming from the auto makers out east that came by rail car to the transload yard and then he would load up and do drops at the various dealers around the city. I went with him a couple of time, and he did most of his late at night because less traffic and you didnt have to worry about traffic in and out of the dealerships. Sometimes he might have just a couple stops and other times there might be 6 or 7 stops depending on how the vehicle's are that are ready to go at the Trans load yard, because the transload yard is massive... I mean vehicles upon vehicles upon vehicles and packed in like sardines. He made great money doing it but it isnt all just drive a vehicle on and your good to go, a lot of work and planning to get it right so you could do your drops in order but you also needed to watch weights and heights etc Brandon seems like he took in the training and got it down pat, like I said lots of moving part and there is a lot to remember just like he4 explained things you can see just how much technology has gone into these trailers but it is only as good as the operator that is using the unit, because lots of moving parts and things to remember when loading and unloading, but good for him , hope he enjoys it, it's kind of a neat job, hard work and the pay is good but they are damn picky about who they hire for there jobs doing this, so that is a feather in Brandon's cap it isnt for everyone. A friend of mind used to drive flat deck and tried his hand at auto hauling, and he didnt last 3 months, he said it was way more work and lots to remember , great money but he didnt like some of the crazy hours you had to work and just how much work went into putting cars on and taking them off and all the paperwork , so he went back to flat deck the trailer and trucks were expensive back when my uncle was doing it, I can not even imagine how much they are these days, but they sure have come a long way quite the pieces of engineering

Very interesting, even for me, since I've watched a couple of channels of cars/trucks being loaded/unloaded. It gives a better understanding of how the decks move but I can't imagine the engineering that went into the development. Sorta grounded rocket science!

Thanks JC! I would hate to be the one that has to do all the plumbing of the hydraulic lines! He has that truck figured out on how to get the most on it! If he can get an extra car on it is a bonus for him! Always have been impressed with those trucks! We're ready to start to put the dump bed on the truck! Should have it done in a few weeks!

Man that thing looks like a mechanical nightmare, more moving parts to maintain than 10 excavators! Looks like a tough job! I know tarping a load in the rain and cold or heat is not fun, and I imagine that is probably worse, loading and strapping down 10 cars!

That was very interesting I'm always curious about how things work. As a commercial aircraft mechanic whenever I had a part to change I would allwas study the system so I knew exactly what that part did and how that system worked. That in turn help me diagnose problems. Most guys would just go change the part and go to lunch. Thanx for the great videos keep it up.

Back in the 90's..the company i worked for did the majority of repairs on similar car hauler company...biggest nightmare you could have..when do the hydraulic hoses bust? Yes sir..loaded to the max..getting to some of them was like putting a watermelon in a toaster slot..i hated working on them..even tires and break changes were miserable...total pita all around..i dont miss working on them

Car haulers sure have evolved over the years from the "one size fits all" top and tunnel style of decades ago. I recall seeing the big change of one over the cab as a big deal. Now they can be configured to haul most anything even mix and match body types. Very versatile. It is a puzzle when you figure in the height restriction. Cool. Question: How much empty travel time is involved or are pick up locations spaced so as this is at a minimum? What has he loaded that he would not mind it being his?

We get to pick and choose our loads, so I try to pick the ones that have the least deadhead miles. I'll run from Point A to Point B, and we have other yards with different vehicles within a few hours of where we deliver. I've ran 7 hours empty a couple times, I've also ran 35 minutes empty a couple times.

Youre very welcome! If im hauling pickup trucks, then I can only take 5 of them. 1 on tractor, 2 on trailer top and 2 on trailer bottom. Gotta be a little creative to make it happen sometimes but it gets on there. If I have 5 pickups ill usually have them add one to go over the hood. Something like a Jeep or a minivan.

I wonder how much a guy makes doing car hauling. Probably more insurance but better pay ? Looks like quite a bit more labor in loading and unloading. I wonder if he just goes in and get the keys with paperwork or if he sets up and they drive up.

I get a load sheet with VIN numbers, bay locations of the vehicles at the yard, and which vehicles go to which dealer. Keys are in the vehicles (locked gate with multiple security guards and cameras) but the rest is on me. I go find them, do a quick inspection, load them n strap them, then drop everything down to 13' 6" myself.

When i drove otr i ended up talking to a owner op parking lot. He had a pto pump for backup but also had a 110v motor pump that he ran off his apu so no idling needed. I wouldnt want to drive a parking lot but everybody is different
