Luigi Grasso's sax licks are wonderfully delivered. He has excellent control of that instrument which can be difficult. The young soloists are so mature and professional...they have all pretty well mastered their instruments and have many years ahead to hone their talents. Joan Chamorro continues to do very important work in reviving jazz and big band sound. Love that he is going through the whole book of standards.

Add 5:09 Jan quotes from "September in the Rain" [the music corresponding to the words "The leaves of brown came tumbling down" in that tune ]- both Joan and Luigi turn in recognition and admiration. This quoting fits the sense of the Quasimodo, as it comes from the bebop era, when soloists frequently skillfully interjected quotes from other tunes into their solos.

Liked the arrangements, Liked the soloists [all of them!]. Was fascinated and enlightened to find out from one of the commentators that the tune is written to the chords of 'Embraceable You." After hearing the performance a few times, I tried singing "Embraceable You' along with the band (and it does fit). Listened again to the whole thing with Embraceable You in my head, - together it expanded the dimension of the performance for me. Great job by SAJB!

This is a great rendition and arrangement of the Charlie Parker standard. Joan Chamorro's young brass and reed soloists seem to get better and better every time. Jan Domènech's piano solo (starting with the first notes of Jobim's "Desafinado" 4:42 ), is simply genius. Moltes Gràcies, Joan !

I have played this video a number of times, trying to establish why I seem to know the tune. Now, something has jogged my memory at last - I don't 'know' the tune in the way that I could sing it but I could sing Gershwin's 'Embraceable You' (pardon my voice) along with the recording. I knew that Charlie Parker had 'borrowed' other people's chord-sequences in this manner from time to time (and never returned them!!) but I guess I need to do some research to avoid being caught out again ! Jan Domènech inserts some interesting quotes into his solos occasionally ... this time listen out for 'Desafinado' and 'September in the Rain'.

Luigi seems to think that the ideas is to see how many notes he can cram into a solo. The kids have been taught that it is really how much feeling you get into the solo. I vote for the kids!
@lechtrzeciak60844 жыл бұрын
Alan, while I understand your criticism, I do not agree. Moreover, the very kids seem not to agree. Watch "After You've Gone" (sung by Eva F) to see how they honestly express an amazement at Luigi's play. And there is a good reason why Luigi got to Berklee as a young teenager, and - no less important - why he is featured in so many SAJB videos. Both sides must have enjoyed it a lot. Finally, check his bio. This guy has been working hard on his skill, on the theory, on the practical music making (playing in multiple constellations), and also - having himself benefitting from some educational programs - on paying forward by supporting young musicians in various ways. I happen to be amazed by his playing. My opinion, of course.

Luigi needs some lessons with Scot Hamilton. Scott can easily demonstrate that it is not about how many notes you play. I like the kid's solos better, they say something and don't blow the mood.
@IRACEMABABU5 жыл бұрын
Scott Hamilton is a midlle jazz saxophonist, Luigi is an alto be bop saxophonist. Two different styles, two different instruments, two different musics, two different eras. Luigi is pretty good in the Parker-Cannonball Adderley's style, in fact he is the best young alto appearing on the bop european jazz scene since a long time.
